1 About the Author Korean American guitarist/composer Sungmin Shin maintains a vigorous schedule divided between performing and teaching in a wide variety of musical settings. As a musician, Mr. Shin finds a unique balance between his classical training and deep roots in rock and popular guitar styles. This combination drives his curiosity to seek new modes of expression through performance, improvisation, and composition. Mr. Shin has been acknowledged through numerous awards, grants and scholarships, and has been invited to perform and present workshops, masterclasses, and lectures across the U.S. and Canada. A frequent collaborator with various musicians and ensembles, he is a member of the Tantalus Quartet and fivebyfive. Mr. Shin is a devoted educator and shares his passion for music with students of all ages and levels. He has been invited to teach, present, and adjudicate for festivals and guitar programs around the US and Canada including Arkansas State University, Bloomsburg University, Buffalo State College, Eastman School of Music, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Potsdam, Great Lakes Guitar Festival, Guitar Foundation of America, New Mexico Classical Guitar Festival, UofL Festival (Louisville, KY), and more. He currently teaches at The University at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo), Eastman Community Music School, Music & Arts (Pittsford, NY), and in his home studio (Penfield, NY). Preface Portraits and Melodies for the Beginning Guitarist is a collection of four books that contain short pieces for students. These have been composed and arranged to develop proper technique at a gradual pace and aims to build reading skills along the way. The pieces draw upon a variety of musical styles and present unique expressive challenges for students. The use of dynamics and shaping of the phrases should be encouraged. Also, playing with a strong sense of pulse and rhythm should be emphasized. Most importantly, it is my wish that those who play these pieces find joy in making music through the guitar. I would like to dedicate this collection of pieces to Professor James Smith who taught and chaired the classical guitar department for many years at the University of Southern California. Thank you for inspiring me to pursue the art of teaching and find happiness in its pursuit. May you rest in peace.
