THE SEAHAWK St. Monica Catholic Elementary School s Student Newspaper Special Issue! This special issue of The Seahawk introduces you to our student-staffers. They have worked on gleaning details through interviews, writing intriguing articles, and photographing with attention to composition, lighting, and background. Congratulations, staff, on a successful year s learning and collaboration! Josette W. For this issue, staff members were asked to use the skills they honed this year to write articles about themselves and to include well-composed, interesting selfies. The staff members let you know where they will wear their shades this summer and model them in their selfies. Special thanks to this year s student editors: Josie W., Olivia S., and Grace C. Each of these students put in extra effort to lead the staff for one issue. Hi! My name is Josette W. I am in 3rd grade. Some of my talents are dancing jazz, softball, and swimming. I am looking forward to travelling and seeing my cousins. I can speak a small amount of French. I am wearing my sunglasses in Vienna. I am proud to introduce this year s Seahawk staff! Mrs. Corrigan, Moderator 1

Scarlett S. Sabina E. Hi! My name is Sabina E. and I am in 3 rd grade. My favorite newspaper assignment this year was the survey: Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg? I have learned a lot on the Seahawk staff, but if I were to pick one thing that I learned, it s that interviewing people is fun! When I m not at school, one of my interests is musical theater. I just love music and the stage, and I love the spotlight! This summer, I m looking forward to musical theater, Minecraft, and Ireland. I m going to prepare for 4 th grade by reading a lot, doing math, and being awesome! In my spare time, I can be found reading, doing math, or just saying moo! This summer, I ll be wearing my sunglasses in my dreams. 2

Elizabeth J. My name is Elizabeth J. and I have been on The Seahawk for three years. I am in 5 th grade and my teacher is Mrs. Hackney. I have been at St. Monica since Kindergarten and I was so excited when newspaper was introduced to the school in 2013. I love extracurricular activities such as the newspaper because it is fun to be part of a group where I can work with others. I like newspaper because I learn about writing, photography, and interviewing. My favorite assignment was the Exotic Easter Traditions article because I got to learn about amazing traditions from other countries. The most important thing I learned was how to take a good photograph, but the thing I remember the most is how to meet deadlines. Outside of school, I play classical piano. I like it because I get to express my emotions through music, especially at recitals. I recently made it to the regional level of the Bach Piano Festival. I am also in Choir where we sing in masses. I like to sing because we do a lot of harmony. One of the sports I play is volleyball. I was on the B volleyball team this year. This summer, I plan to go camping in the Sierras. I am going to wear my sunglasses to the beach on Beach Day at the end of the school year. To prepare for next year, I will work on my reading comprehension and my math skills. I am coming back to newspaper next year and I hope that the things that I learned in newspaper will help me to be a great student. Happy summer to all! 3

William L. Ryan L. My name is Ryan and in the 7th grade. My favorite newpaper assignment that I completed this year is this one. Something that I learned from being on The Seahawk staff is how to take a picture and to make it look good with the background. One of my interests that I have outside of school is that I play the piano. I am looking forward to going to my lakehouse to go on my boat. I am going to prepare myself for new school year by doing math probelms that I would do in eight grade. I would also like to share that I am looking forward to eigth grade next year. I will wear my sunglasses at my lakehouse over the summer. 4

GG M. Hi, my name is Gabriella Grace, but everyone calls me G.G. I m in the 5th grade and have really enjoyed Mrs. Hackney s class! This is my third year on The Seahawks staff and it has taught me the importance of working together as group to get things done. The school talent show is always a big hit with the parents, students and teachers, so I really enjoyed working on the recap of the talent show! Outside of SMCES, I enjoy playing fast-pitch softball, AYSO soccer, and musical theater. This summer I am looking forward to hanging out with friends that I have not seen in awhile and just chilling at home. I m going to try to read a lot of books, but am not making any promises. In case you don t know, I am a Jake Pauler and I will be wearing my sunglasses all around town this summer! Liam E. Hello, my name is Liam E. and I am in 5th grade. My favorite newspaper assignment this year was the 2D vs. 3D Survey for the art show. When I worked on the newspaper, I learned the value of collaboration. Outside of school I also do gymnastics at Broadway Gymnastics, and I complete on the boys team. This summer I am looking forward to doing a marine biology camp. As for school, I am definitely not going to forget the things I learned in 5th grade so I will be prepared for 6th grade. I REALLY enjoyed working on the Seahawk newspaper this year. This summer, look for me wearing my shades at THE BEACH. 6

Shayne M. Hello my name is Shayne M. I am in 5th grade. I have been in the seahawk newspaper staff for 2 years now and I enjoy coming every Thursday to talk and work hard on my article. This article is about the staff where you, the readers get to know more about us. I enjoy reading, singing, volleyball, and especially surfing. This summer I will probably go to the beach(wearing my sunglasses) and catch up on reading. During my time on the newspaper I have learned the meaning of responsibility and teamwork. My favorite newspaper assignment was the April newsletter. During the April newsletter I learned how to be responsible on my own. I will prepare for next year by getting more organized with notebooks and planners. Also by getting on top of assignments before the last day. I would like to talk about the some of the more interesting things about me. My favorite book is The Circle of Magic series and my favorite singers are Demi Lovato, Rachel Platten and Melanie Martinez. I am very connected to my family and a little shy, but I do like to stand up for what I believe in. My favorite songs are Heart Attack by Demi Lovato, Mad Hatter by Melanie Martinez, InuYasha s Lullaby (original words by Lizz Robinett), and Fight Song by Rachel Platten. Lastly my favorite animal is a sea turtle, also my pets are a desert tortoise named Joey and a hermit crab named Crabby. Thank you for reading this article and I hope you all have an amazing Summer! 7

Thank you, Mrs. Corrigan, for organizing the school s newspaper this year! Isabella P. Hi my name is Isabella P. and I am in 6th grade. My favorite assignment that I completed this year was the winter fun facts and I learned to always quote people for something they said and to use quotation marks. Some things that I enjoy doing are writing, playing guitar, hanging out with friends, etc. I am looking forward to swimming this summer, surfing, hanging out with friends, and traveling. I believe reading more books and practicing advanced work will prepare myself for next years new challenges in the school year. These two dogs in the picture are my dogs Spot and Biscuit. I will definitely be wearing my sunglasses this summer to the beach and the promenade. This is a little bit about me. Thank you so much Mrs. Corrigan for another great year on the newspaper and I will hope to see you next year. 8

Whelan S. My name is Whelan S. and I am just about to complete 6th grade. My favorite newspaper assignment this year is this one because I love taking selfies! This year, on the Seahawk, the most important lesson that I learned was sticking to deadlines. Outside of school, I like to be at the beach and in the ocean. I also like boogie boarding and golf. This summer, I am looking to spending time at the lake and the beach. I will prepare myself for 7th grade by reading lots of books and getting lots of rest this summer. I'd like to thank Mrs. Corrigan for all of the time and effort that she puts into making the Seahawk a great success for us kids! I am going to wear my sunglasses anytime I am outside!! 9
