CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter presents background of the study, statement of the problems, purposes of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of the key terms. Each point is presented as follows. 1.1 Background of the study Literature is a written work that expresses and communicates thought, feeling and attitudes towards life. We can create life by our imagination through literature, because literature is a vital record of what men have thought and felt about their experience, which is interesting for all of us. It means that literature can be used to express thought, feeling, or idea about life. Literature is creativity of art, which has beautiful aspect like the diction of word, the used of rhythm, and others. According to J. Long (2005: 5), state that literature is the expression of life in the word of truth and beauty, it is the writer record of man s spirit of the thought, emotion, expression. Novel is part of prose fiction, which has the beautiful values and gives some fun for everyone who reads. That reason makes novel different from other literary works. Novel has two element: intrinsic and extrinsic element and those elements are related each other. Intrinsic element are characters, setting, theme, plot, and act. The extrinsic elements are those outside the novel such as psychology, social culture, and biography. 1

In order to understand human life, people need to learn psychology that makes them understand what people feel, want, and think or do. By studying and analyzing a novel we can learn psychology of human life. According to Arp and Johnson (2006: 63) Novel gives more detail awareness of humanity in the world that is sometimes friendly and unfriendly. It also helps the readers understand their world, and themselves. Human beings often have problems and conflicts everyday. They become inseparable parts of their lives. In our daily lives we get socialized with other, but we cannot always avoid problems and conflict. As long as we live in the world and make relationship with other, we cannot avoid conflicts and problems although we never invite them. Human beings are familiar with conflict in daily life. According to Engram (2010), conflict is a struggle life of character to solve the abstraction in achieving her purpose. A conflict, or a struggle between opposing force, exist at the center of every plot and is frame on which the plot is structured. Moreover, Human beings must also relate thinking to knowledge and information (what we think about), and the processes of communicating our ideas, either in written oral form. Thinking is one aspect of an integrated process of finding, analyzing, and communicating information. Sternberg, (2002: I) says that smartness is a property of people. It is an enduring property of a person. A person who is smart today is expected to be smart tomorrow and into the foreseeable future. 2

The previous research that analyzed a novel about the character s problem was conducted by Hesiningsih (2006) entitled Analysis of Huckleberry Finn s Struggles in Mark Twain The Adventure of Tom Sawyers. She analyzed Huck s Struggle in the novel. From the finding of her research, she discribed Huck s Struggles and what caused the struggles of Huck. The result of her study showed that, firstly, there are two kinds of Huckleberry Finn s struggles, physical and mental. Secondly, Huckleberry Finn s Struggling was caused by the facts that his father was cruel and his close friend was sold into slavery. In addition, struggle is the process to get better life and became smarter to face the problem s of life. Moreover, this present study in analysis the smartness of Tom Sawyer s as he is struggling of his life. therefore, since struggle is a process of smartness, this previous study has correlation and straighterned to present of the study. In the real life, people need the struggle to achieve the goals. A struggle can not be separated from mindset and smartness to create a change. One form of this smartness is choose precise argument to ensure someone. The smartness will bring major changes in the character s behavior in order to reach the goal of life. From the reason above, the researcher is interested in analyzing the works of Mark Twain s novel and focused on Tom s Sawyer s smartness, so it is entitled An Analysis of Tom Sawyer s Smartness in Pirate on the River novel by Mark Twain. Mark Twain is the one of popular Novelist that has many interesting novels, One of the novel he wrote is. Pirates on the river from the Adventure of Tom Sawyer. The adventure of Tom sawyer is a great story because the author has created characters that are true to life. In this story, the author creates the situation where 3

Tom Sawyer as the main characters feels gloomy, desperate, and he is exiled by his civilization. Nobody love him. Tom wants to go away from his lack of sympathy and sadness by running away from home, looking from freedom he needs, Then Tom decides to escape from home to become a pirate. Meanwhile, there is a boy who has the same problem as him, named Joe Harper. Then they meet Huckleberry Finn and join him promptly. They discuss their plans, and start a trip to the island as the pirates. In this case, the researcher in this thesis wants to analyze the main character s smartness stated in this story, Especially, the smartness of the main character s to ensure his friends by his precise argument and also to answer all the questions from his friends when they escape from home to become pirates. Tom Sawyer s smartness grows up because of several factors. Based on the description above, the analysis of smartness to be the priority in this research. 1.2 Statement of the Problem Based on the background of the story above, the problems are formulated as follows: 1. What is Tom Sawyer s Smartness found in Pirates on the River by Mark Twain? 2. What are the causes of Tom Sawyer s Smartness found in Pirate on the River? 3. What are the effect of his Smartness toward himself and other? 4

1.3 Purpose of the Study Purpose of the study is to find out the answer of the problems. They are: 1. To describe Tom Sawyer s Smartness. 2. To explain the causes of Tom Sawyer s Smartness in Pirates on the River 3. To know the effect of his Smartness toward himself and other 1.4 Significance of the Study Based on the teaching learning activities, the researcher hopes the result of the study will be useful to enlarge the readers knowledge. Besides, the result of the study is also expected to give a reference to the students who are interested in literature. 1.5 Scope and Limitation There are so many elements related to the study of short story. The writer realizes that short story has more than the previous mentioned problem to discuss. In this study, the researcher limit on analysing Tom Sawyer s Smartness in Pirate on the River novel by Mark Twain. More over, to get accurate data the researcher analyses Tom Sawyer s Smartness in response to the condition or environment and the problems around him based on the study itself. 1.6 Definition of Key terms The definition of Key term is the research is aimed to avoid misunderstanding terms, which exist in this research. The terms that are necessary to be defined are as follows: 5

- Smartness : is quick in understanding things or condition and problems, and also quick in overcoming the problems (Oxford,1995: 13) - Conflict : is the struggle of one person against another (Jones in Agung 2008: 4).
