opera Organic/Plastic Electronics Research Alliance
OLAE, an emerging field Intense R&D activities led to demonstration of basic functionalities of organic materials And have opened up an exciting area, of flexible and large area electronics, with a high potential market growth Where new large area electronic deviced processing capabilities [processable electronic solutions] are acting as a powerful driver
Why a single European strategy a general lack of coherent long-term strategy for OLAE a fragmentation, duplication and discontinuity of research efforts limited coordination of European and national funding activities shortcomings in the ability to translate research results into productand process-innovation and a number of research and innovation hindering regulatory framework conditions.
Why new entrepreneurship SME s are at the core of European industry and key to innovation European Giants are aging SME s have to respond increasingly to a strong competition in the internal market and globally Need to increase their knowledge base and their research efforts in transnational cooperation Actions at EU level required to complement and enhance impact of actions at national & regional level

Europe s pole position Europe has important strengths in research & technology and a strong position in materials & processing Intense R&D activities carried out in European academia & research institutes ahead of East Asia and North America First printed electronics factories appearing in Europe Europe leading in areas like e-paper, RFID s, and first rollable displays, first printed sensors, first printed interactive games, etc.
Europe s challenges Foster to turn research results into marketable products & services faster Consolidate European leadership in flexible, organic & large area electronics By way of Attracting higher investments in Europe in flexible & large area electronics Pool of resources to overcome technology roadblocks Boost industrial competitiveness through development and growth of competitive clusters
R&D Challenges to be addressed Materials & processing R&D&E to be carried out in re performance, reliability and manufacturability Device architecture, performance and stability of technical design are also key issues Future challenges Heterogeneous material integration [organic/inorganic] Increasing importance of low temperature processed materials, and devices co-development
Opera s objectives
Competitiveness clusters
OLAE Innovation Process Research OLAE needs market demand to start turning the wheel Innovation in industry Education & Training OLAE needs to create awareness & visibility
Logical structure
Milestone : OLAE Vision Paper 8 Recommendations : Establish European platform on OLAE Develop SRA to coordinate EC and national research funding Establish specific measures to close the gap between R&D and commercialisation Nurture the emergence of an European OLAE industry, for example through new approaches to create lead markets Increase the funding budget for R&D in proportion to the huge expected markets Develop an ERA-Net plus approach for cooperation beyond Europe Take measures to early establish standards for new products Establish innovative education & training schemes
Milestone : OLAE SRA 9 Core recommendations : Clustered approach with pilot production centres to close the gap between R&D and products Nurture the emergence of a European OLAE industry, for example through new approaches to create lead markets Establish OLAE Platform together with all stakeholders Coordinate existing OLAE networks and platforms Coordinate EC and national research programmes Develop an approach for cooperation in and beyond Europe Take measures to early establish standards for new products Establish new training schemes which fit to the interdisciplinary nature of the OLAE field Increase the funding budget in proportion to the huge expected markets and establish new ways to access capital
Milestone : OLAE in PH21 Major benefits : Single R&D vision and strategy Single agenda for implementation Opportunities for cross-sectoral synergies Higher critical mass of combined communities Enlarged opportunities for networking and collaboration Combined resources to create higher visibility And more!
Opera work to be done! WP2 Clusters : Clusters create the infrastructure to drive the OLAE technology from lab to fab and onto full commercialization. A gravitation point of competences and resources which can drive innovation. Cluster strategy need to be developed further. WP4 Entrepreneurship : Start-up s and SME s are at the core of European industry and key to innovation now that European Giants are aging. Facilities should be created to enhance the establishment and growth. Drivers need to be developed further. WP5 Standards : Standards in device/application/product specicification as well as in manufacturing/processing are essential for an nacient industrial sector to grow. Work started needs to be continued.
