Blackwood Photographic Club Image submission guidelines GENERAL COMPETITION ENTRY RULES 1. All Entrants must be financial members of the Club 2. All entries must be the work of the entrant 3. Competitions for the annual aggregates are held in each of the following sections Section 1 Projected Images - includes both slides and digital Section 2 Monochrome Prints (Maximum image area A3) Section 3 Colour Prints (Maximum image area A3) Section 4 Album Prints (max 15cm x 10cm) NOTE: Triptychs are not permitted in Album prints Section 5 Novice Projected images - Open category 4. A limit of 3 entries is allowed in each section on each competition night Entries may be Set subject and/or Open category, in any combination of 3 images in total which may be split across Set and Open categories For example: 3 images are entered by Fred Gettsitt and these have been entered as 2 in open and 1 in set Fred could also have entered 1 in open and 2 in set or 3 open only or 3 set only Nigel Idontcare tries to enter 3 in open and 2 in set and therefore has 2 too many images 5. A maximum of 3 entries is also allowed in each section of the Annual Exhibition 6. Images are judged out of 10 for annual aggregate competitions. Awards will be made at the end of the year to aggregate winners in each section 7. Annual Exhibition entries are judged out of 15 points 8. Entries may be used twice only in normal competitions during the year, but are only eligible for entry in the Annual Exhibition if they have not been entered in a previous Annual. Shields are awarded to top scorers in each section of the Annual and Aggregate Competition (Judges discretion if more than one top point scorer) 9. Printed images are to bear the Entrant s name and title on the back (either the print or the matte) 10. A title for images is preferred 11. Prints are mounted on felt cloth with Velcro dots. It is recommended that competitors affix Velcro dots to their own prints. If no dots are attached, Velcro backed bulldog clips are available. 12. IMPORTANT: For PRINT entries, the entrant s name, image section (Album/Colour/Monochrome), title of the images and category (Set or Open) are to be emailed to the Print Competition Secretary at bpcprintcompetition@gmail.com by no later than 7pm on the Tuesday prior to competition ALL ENTRIES ARE TO BE HUNG ON THE APPROPRIATE DISPLAY STAND NO LATER THAN 7:45PM ON THE NIGHT. LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

Blackwood Photographic Club - Image submission guidelines (last updated Jan-2017) Page 2 of 13 PROJECTED IMAGE COMPETITION RULES - DIGITAL, NOVICE and SLIDES As well as the General Competition rules, the following apply to projected entries: 1. A maximum of 3 images across categories continues to apply to this section 2. Slides must: 1. Be in 35mm film format 2. Be correctly spotted in the lower left corner when viewed in the hand the right way up 3. bear the Entrant s name 3. Digital images: 1. All images must be set to resolution of 72 DPI (dots per inch). Higher DPI may compromise image size 2. The maximum files size of any one file is 2 Megabytes 3. Maximum image dimensions are 1400 pixels by 1050 pixels 4. Members who are unsure on how to re-size their images accordingly, should contact a committee member for further guidance. A guide for most common software is included below 5. LARGER IMAGES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! 6. Image files must be named with the competitors name image title category - Open or Set subject Your-Name_Picture-Title_Category Please split your name, image title and category (Open/Set or Novice) with an underscore _ character Please space the words in your name and the image title with a dash character (ie - ) e.g.: Joe-Blogs_Image-Title_Set e.g.: Joe-Blogs_Image-Title_Open e.g.: Joe-Blogs_Image-Title_Novice 7. for all DIGITAL entries (including NOVICE) the images must Eligibility for Novice Section. be emailed to the Digital Entries Secretary at bpcdigitalentries@gmail.com have an email subject title in the format YYYY-MM-DD_COMPETITION name exactly as it appears in the program where YYYY-MM-DD is the Year, Month and Date (put a zero before months & days less than 10) there is an underscore _ between the date and competition name the competition name is capitalised eg Faith becomes FAITH eg For the competition Music run on 12 Mar 2015 the subject would be 2015-03-14_MUSIC be received no later than 7pm on the Tuesday before the Competition Novices are deemed to be those who have been a member of BPC or any other photographic club for less than 12 months and who identify themselves as relatively new to photography. It is assumed that, in any case, those consistently scoring high in the novice section will seek to stretch their horizons in the other 4 categories IF YOU NEED ANY FURTHER CLARIFICATION FOR ANY OF THESE RULES, PLEASE CONTACT ANY OF THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Blackwood Photographic Club - Image submission guidelines (last updated Jan-2017) Page 3 of 13 DIGITAL IMAGE SIZING AND NAMING As described in the entry rules, images must be 72dpi and 1400 by 1050 pixels and no larger than 2 Megabytes. There are a range of digital image processing applications available to photographers, and each has its own methods for preparing the image. Be warned that some email applications will resize your images possibly incorrectly. In this document we cover (click on the name to jump to that page): Apple iphoto Apple Preview Adobe LightRoom CC Adobe Photoshop CC Apple iphoto and Preview If your image was saved in RAW or similar format on your camera a. Ensure you have the photo you wish to use displayed & selected b. Click on the File button in the menu bar and choose Export (or Command-Shift-E)

In the Save As dialogue browse to a suitable folder i. Enter the name you wish to use (ie based on the clubs file naming convention above) j. Then click Ok

Select the image for Preview and click Open (you should have a preview image open) and select Tools from the menu bar and click Adjust Size e. In the Image Dimensions dialogue set: i Fit into Custom ii Choose pixels next to the width/height options iii Check Scale Proportionally iv Check Resample Image v Select a resolution of 72 pixels/inch vi Now set the Width or Height to the 1400 maximum (depending on orientation). The other dimension should scale correctly

Click Add to save the settings d. The New Preset dialog below will appear e. Title the Preset appropriately and click Create 2. To export the image after you have altered it to your requirements a. select the image after you have adjusted/processed it to your needs b. Click File > Export Photos as in 1 above c. Choose your new Preset d. Specify the folder you require to save the image(s) e. On completion, go to the folder and rename your files to match the club entry requirements

From the Image Size dialog adjust the image a. Ensure Constrain Proportions is checked b. Resample Image should be checked and set to Bicubic Sharper (best for reduction) c. Then adjust the Resolution to 72 pixels/inch d. Now alter the pixel dimensions to make the longest side (either the Height or Width) to 1400 pixels e. The resultant dialog should look something like this: f. Click OK g. Save your image by clicking File > Save for Web & Devices

Change the Desired File Size to 2MB as shown k. Click Ok the panel below your image will display it s format, size in Kbytes l. Now click m. In the Save dialogue complete ensure you choose the correct folder to save your file and complete the dialogue with the File name (in the BPC required format) and click Save to complete
