ADOPTION OF COMPUTERIZED ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEM (CAIS) AMONG MALAYSIAN SMEs Chairperson : Associate Professor Mohd Zulkifli bin Mokhtar, Ph.D. Member School : Mohd Shaari bin Abdul Rahman, Ph.D. Azwadi bin Ali, Ph.D. : Maritime Business and Management SMEs represent a vital segment of the Malaysian economy. Previous studies had indicated that the adequacy and reliability of an accounting system appears to be important to the survival of SMEs. Today, with efficient computer operations such as the computerized accounting information system (CAIS), an adequate accounting system could be achieved much easier than via the manual method. However, despite having greater access to computer technology than before, the potential of information technology is still underexploited by many SMEs. Furthermore, early CAIS adopters might not have fully utilized the potential of the technology. CAIS is considered important for SMEs to plan, record, trace and report their financial transactions. Hence, using CAIS could well help SMEs to achieve their financial aims effectively and ii

in a strategic manners. Since SMEs constitute over 90 percent of all businesses in Malaysia, the reluctance of SMEs to adopt CAIS poses a great challenge in promoting the industry in Malaysia. This study was conducted to investigate the factors that influence the Malaysian SMEs to adopt CAIS. The specific objectives are to examine the factors that contribute to the likelihood of CAIS adoption among non-adopters and the factors that influence the extent of CAIS adoption among adopters. This study also examined the SME s overall performance as a result of using CAIS. The hypothesized models were validated empirically through the partial least squares technique using a sample collected from 382 SMEs in Malaysia. The results demonstrate that for nonadopters, the likelihood to adopt CAIS depends on the owner-manager s support, organizational readiness and government influence. While the extent of CAIS adoption among adopters depends on owner-manager s support, organizational readiness and vendor support services. Moreover, the relationship between the extent of CAIS adoption and the firm s overall performance was found to be significant, and the performance of CAIS adopters was significantly higher than that of non-adopters. The overall results of this study lends support for SMEs to fully utilize CAIS and provide guidance for the relevant parties in promoting awareness of the beneficial use of CAIS among non-adopters to motivate them to promptly adopt it. iii

PENERIMAAN PENGGUNAAN SISTEM MAKLUMAT PERAKAUNAN BERKOMPUTER (SMPB) DI KALANGAN PKS DI MALAYSIA Pengerusi Ahli Pusat Pengajian : Profesor Madya Mohd Zulkifli bin Mokhtar, PhD. : Mohd Shaari bin Abdul Rahman, PhD. Azwadi bin Ali, PhD. : Perniagaan dan Pengurusan Maritim Perusahaan Kecil dan Sederhana (PKS) merupakan satu segmen yang penting dalam ekonomi Malaysia. Kajian terdahulu telah menunjukkan bahawa ketepatan dan kebolehpercayaan sistem perakaunan adalah penting untuk kemandirian PKS. Hari ini, sistem perakaunan yang tepat boleh diperolehi dengan lebih mudah dengan bantuan komputer berbanding kaedah manual iaitu melalui Sistem Maklumat Perakaunan Berkomputer (SMPB). Walaubagaimanapun, kelebihan teknologi maklumat masih belum digunakan secara maksimum oleh kebanyakan PKS walaupun teknologi komputer dapat diakses dengan lebih mudah berbanding sebelum ini. Malahan bagi pengguna sedia ada SMPB sendiri, teknologi ini masih belum digunakan sepenuhnya. SMPB penting bagi PKS untuk merancang, merekod, mengesan dan melaporkan urus niaga kewangan mereka. Oleh itu, dengan menggunakan iv

SMPB, ia boleh membantu PKS untuk mencapai matlamat kewangan mereka dengan lebih berkesan melalui cara yang lebih strategik. Memandangkan PKS mewakili lebih 90 peratus daripada semua perniagaan di Malaysia, keengganan PKS untuk mengamalkan SMPB telah memberi satu cabaran besar dalam mempromosikan industri ini di Malaysia. Kajian ini telah dijalankan untuk mengkaji faktor-faktor yang boleh mempengaruhi PKS di Malaysia untuk menerima pakai SMPB. Objektif khususnya adalah untuk mengkaji faktor-faktor yang menyumbang kepada kesediaan untuk menggunakan SMPB di kalangan bukan pengguna dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi tahap penggunaan SMPB di kalangan pengguna. Kajian ini juga mengkaji prestasi keseluruhan PKS hasil daripada penggunaan SMPB. Model hipotesis telah disahkan secara empirik melalui teknik Partial Least Squares menggunakan sampel yang dikutip daripada 382 PKS di Malaysia. Keputusan menunjukkan bahawa bagi bukan pengguna, kemungkinan untuk menggunakan SMPB bergantung kepada sokongan pemilik-pengurus, kesediaan organisasi dan pengaruh kerajaan. Sementara tahap penggunaan SMPB di kalangan pengguna bergantung kepada sokongan pemilik-pengurus, kesediaan organisasi dan sokongan vendor. Selain itu, hubungan antara tahap penggunaan SMPB dan prestasi firma secara keseluruhan didapati signifikan, dan prestasi pengguna SMPB adalah lebih tinggi daripada bukan pengguna.
