Motivation Safety Increasing number of Non- Cooperative RPAS / Drones Increasing number of incidents with drones Sooner or later we are going to loose an airplane to a drone due to a collision Security E.g. potential attack with drones armed with explosives Non-Cooperative RPAS Surveillance, 7-12-2017 4
Non-Cooperative RPAS Small RPAS undetectable by classical Primary Surveillance Radar usually not equipped with ADS-B and/or Mode-S non-cooperative by default Large RPAS detectable by classical Primary Surveillance Radar possibly equipped with ADS-B and/or Mode-S non-cooperative if not equipped or if ADS-B and/or Mode-S are down or switched off Non-Cooperative RPAS Surveillance, 7-12-2017 5
Detection of Non-Cooperative RPAS - Sensors Acoustic sensors Range, depending on acoustic signature and environment noise, 100 m - 5000 m Drone surveillance radars Range, depending on size / radar cross section of drone, 4 48 km Video surveillance systems Radio Frequency (RF) sensors Non-Cooperative RPAS Surveillance, 7-12-2017 6

ARTAS at NLR TRADEF is the NLR environment with both internal and external tools for the development, testing and analysis of trackers. generate plots/reports from synthetic sensors based on synthetic aircraft trajectories feed the tracker in real-time with sensor data from either generated plots/reports or from recorded live data instrument the tracker to get access to the internal data record the output of the tracker in the TRADEF environment for off-line analysis visualise the sensor data and the multi-radar track data perform track accuracy and track detection performance analysis Non-Cooperative RPAS Surveillance, 7-12-2017 17
