Notes From the Gym October 9, 2018 I am excited to announce the launching of a new program for our 5th-8th grade student-athletes, which will begin next week. I do not know exactly what to call it at this point, but am leaning toward Bagels and Bibles. I will most likely have the student-athletes finalize the name, though, so they can have ownership in the direction of this new idea. Regardless of the name we choose, the program will be a time of devotions and Bible study from the perspective of athletes and coaches. There are so many life lessons that can be learned on the court and playing field, so there will be time for discussion about these lessons as well. At Friday's Archdiocesan Convention, I was inspired by one of the speakers to share with our students the two scorecards of life... the athletic scorecard and the faith scorecard...and how we can improve on both. I will meet with any interested student-athletes at 7:30am on the third Wednesday of each month, and will provide breakfast treats and juice for those in attendance. We will meet in the Franciscan Room, and the "Kick-off" will be next Wednesday, October 17th. Not to look ahead, but we are off on November 21st and there are 5 Wednesdays in October, so I would have November's meeting on the 14th. I don't know how this will be received by our 5th-8th graders, especially with the early meeting time, and yet, I was so inspired by this speaker that I felt that I had to give it a try!! My heart is telling me to go out on a limb with this new way to minister to the St. Monica community, and I am really looking forward to it. Thank you for your support of everything that goes on in the gym! Blessings, Mrs. Wallner SMS Chess Club Chess is an excellent academic activity; it develops memory, concentration, and logical reasoning. The SMS Chess Club provides chess instruction and practice for kids who want to learn chess or improve their chess skills. At least one instructor from the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation (WSCF) directs each session. To learn more about the WSCF and using chess as an educational tool, please refer to their website at www.wisconsinscholasticchess.org. We will also provide the students with access to www.chesskid.com. This will allow new Chess players to practice and give our more advanced Chess players an opportunity improve their skills even further! The club has its own chess sets, so there s no need to bring one. We ask that each family sign up to volunteer during one session (no chess knowledge required!). To sign up for Chess Club, please complete the form below and return it to the school office in an envelope labeled Chess. Please sign-up no later than October 12 th. We will end the season hosting an SMS Chess Tournament February 9th! questions, please contact If you have Gianna Szatmary (gianna.szatmary@gmail.com) or Meghan Fetherston (thefetherstons@gmail.com)
