Chapter I: Introduction When a designer begins an interior design project, experts suggest that flooring be the first topic in the discussion. Knowing the flooring selection provides groundwork for additional design choices. The flooring sets the tone, the style, the mood, and a foundation for the development of the room s décor. This ebook is a short and sweet discussion related to home flooring selections. In the following chapters we will discuss various flooring types in relation to specific rooms in your home. While the same categories of flooring may be discussed multiple times, it will always be in relation to their effect on that particular area of the house. Page 3

Chapter II: Before You Begin Before we get started, consider these three points: A) Budget There are high budget options and low budget options. Before you begin evaluating your choices, have a cost figure set in your mind. There are plenty of nice flooring options available, so there is no need to break the bank! Consider which options are affordable for your family. B) Intended Activities This is the most important question. What does your family intend to do in your home, or in that specific room that you are remodeling? If your family likes watching movies together, perhaps the kids would enjoy a carpeted floor so they can grab blankets and snuggle up. Or, if your family enjoys hosting dance parties or large gatherings, a hardwood floor would be the best because it tends to be much easier to clean. Consider which option would best fit your family s needs and preferences. C) Decor Preferences If your home is decorated in a more rustic or western style, a hardwood floor may match that styling the best. On the other hand, many modern decor designs often feature carpet. Understanding the style of your home and knowing which options would best complement that style will help you select the most aesthetically pleasing flooring option for you and your family. Consider which option best fits the style of your home. Page 4

Chapter III: Flooring Your Living Room From hosting parties and socializing with guests, to watching movies and playing games with the kids, the living room is a well loved hang- out area of the home. The flooring you choose to install will affect the use of your living room in many ways. This section provides descriptions of various flooring options and how to decide which one would best fit your home. Laminate Laminate flooring is very popular because it is less expensive than other flooring, such as wood, but it can be made to replicate wood, stone, or ceramic tile. If you want your living room to have the cozy look of wood, or the smooth look of stone, laminate will be a budget- friendly choice. Laminate is especially nice because it is easier to clean and keep in good condition than wood or carpet. Wood Wood has a special depth that allows your room to looks very comfortable and inviting. Wood also complements many different styles of decorating, from rustic to more new age, which makes it convenient for every decorator. Another advantage of wood is that it is painless to clean and is not as easily stained as carpet. Carpet Carpet is an inexpensive and cozy floor option. It comes in many different colors and styles, which means that your living room can be easily personalized to suit your own tastes. The other important advantage of carpet is that, unlike other flooring types, it is very soft and warm. While solid floors can be fit with a heating system, or covered with a large rug, it tends to jack up the bottom line. Also, carpet reduces the amount of noise in your home. These factors can help create an even more calm and relaxed setting for a busy household. Your living room has many different options when it comes to flooring and decor. These previously mentioned flooring types are all very good choices when it comes to relatively inexpensive coverings while also equipping you with an array decorating options. Page 5

Chapter IV: Flooring Your Bedroom The flooring you select is a major part of your room decor decisions. You want to select a type of flooring that looks nice and matches the style of your room. The following section explains your two best options for flooring your bedroom and the advantages of each one. In the same way that clothing selections reflect the style and personality of the person wearing the outfit, a bedroom should be an extension of the person that lives behind that door. Be it vintage, modern, Victorian, renaissance, abstract, Goth, Disney Princess, or Thomas the Tank Engine, the style of each room is unique and molded to the occupant s tastes and preferences. While many elements of a bedroom s design are important, an individual s choice of flooring tends to play a pivotal role in setting the dynamic tone of the room. The two most popular flooring options are carpet and wood. Throughout designer history, cases have been made for both options, but it ultimately comes down to the individual s practical, aesthetic, and tactile preferences. The Case for a Carpeted Bedroom Floor The main attraction is the comfortable, soft, and gentle quality carpet contributes to a room s impression. These are especially nice features to look for when you re flooring your bedroom. The cushioned, lush, comfy quality of carpet is quite appealing compared to the cold, hard, or rigid feeling of a hardwood floor. Carpet can have three dimensional patterns and designs that can neatly accent a bedroom. While the texture and color of wood can vary, it is still limited to a two dimensional plane. Also, there is a far more extensive supply of color choices for carpet. In response to the fact that wood can be cleaned more easily, carpet doesn t show lint, hair, or dirt as readily. Therefore, carpet- lovers can get away with vacuuming less frequently. The Case for Wood/Laminate Bedroom Floor While the upfront cost of wood flooring is generally higher than carpet, the case is often made that wood is a higher- value flooring because it can be refinished. Therefore, wear and tear is less of an issue, and wood floors consequently last longer. Many wood floor promoters emphasize the easy- to- clean character of wood flooring; it is less work to wash a wood floor than it is to deep clean carpet. Moreover, wood floor is at a low risk for stains and spots. Page 6

As a comeback to the fact that wood tends to be cold and hard, try a floor rug. Not only does it provide color and comfort, but it is also adds character and comfort without the hassles of a fully carpeted floor. Choosing Your Carpet In order to narrow down your options, decide whether you d prefer thin and dense carpet or lush and cushioned carpet. Next, decide what shade you d like. Lighter carpet will make the room feel bright and clean, while darker carpet will feel rich. Speckled carpet, a neutral color carpet mottled with tiny flecks, does the best job of hiding stains. Choosing Your Wood/Laminate Floor There are multiple types and textures of wood flooring that would contribute to various design goals. Certain types of wood lend a gleam and gloss feel to the room, while other types would match a more muted or rustic tonal intention. Bamboo makes a room feel bright and crisp. Hand scraped wood flooring tends to fit a more rural look. Dark wood, glossy finished floors are generally chosen for rooms with modern or elegant features. Choose the type of wood that not only suits your preference but also accents your color and styling choices as well. It s safe to say that either wood or carpet is a wise choice. At the end of the day, the only opinion about your floor that matters is your own. So when you re flooring your bedroom, make the choice that fits your style, and create a room where you ll love to live. Page 7

Chapter V: Flooring Your Kitchen It can be argued that the kitchen is the center of most households because it is the place where most people spend a lot of time each day baking, eating, and even relaxing at the table. Because of the fact that this room can be used so much, it is important that it is decorated in a way that is both convenient and tasteful. If you are looking for new kitchen flooring, this following list will hopefully be helpful! Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is especially convenient if you are on a tight budget kitchen flooring. Advantages Comfortable to stand on. Very easy to clean. Long lasting. Disadvantages Can be damaged by sharp objects. Colors fade with too much sunlight exposure. Tile Flooring Tile is a beautiful inexpensive way to floor your kitchen. It is very much like vinyl in that it is easy to clean, but unlike vinyl there are more options when it comes to colors and patterns. Advantages Durable. Easy to clean. Doesn t burn. Maintains color very well. Disadvantages Some types of tile tend to be cold. It is very slippery when wet. Low quality tile can crack. Page 8

Wood Flooring Wood can add a very unique look to your kitchen. If you want your kitchen to look especially warm and inviting, it may be the choice for you. Advantages Very versatile. Adds value to your home. Disadvantages Stains more easily. Laminate Flooring Laminate flooring is very popular because it is an inexpensive way to floor your house in a tasteful way. Laminate can be made to replicate stone, wood, and ceramic tile. This is becoming a very popular kitchen flooring option. Advantages Easy to clean and maintain. Comes in many styles and colors. Easy to replace. Disadvantages It is hard on the feet because it is so inflexible. It does not last as long as some other flooring materials. Choosing your kitchen flooring option can be a difficult decision. There are many different colors, patterns, and floorings to choose from. Hopefully this guide will help you know the advantages and disadvantages of each flooring option, and you will be able to make the right choice for your decor and budget needs. Page 9

Chapter VI: Flooring Your Bathroom Tile Ceramic Tile Ceramic tile is designed to prevent slippage. The texturing of this type of floor tile provides good traction, helping wet feet avoid any slips. Available options within the ceramic tile category include small tiles, large tiles, octagonal, hexagonal, and mosaic tile choices. The most popular types of tile are square and rectangular shaped tiles, which also have two subcategory options. These can be referred to as Consistent Tiling and Varied Sizes Tiling. Marbled Tile Consistent Tiling Consistent tiling covers the entire floor with the same size of tiles. Large tile floors tend to work well to create a consistent design element. This choice would be best in a bathroom that has more stimulating design. Varied Sizes Tiling Tiling done with tiles of varying sizes tends to create a unique, artistic design element. In a bathroom with a more mellow design, the geometrically creative floor construction adds texture and variation. The reflective finish of marbled tile helps to brighten and modernize a bathroom. This tile is especially effective when matched with a marbled countertop. The marbled tiles, usually found in light whites, creams or blacks, create an elegant and distinctive look. Pebble Stone Tile If you would prefer a unique tile construction, pebble stone tile consists of very small, highly textured pieces of tile that looks much like the surface of stone. The texture that pebble stone tile provides does well at accenting the main design elements of the bathroom and providing a foundational design element without drawing too much attention. Wood/Laminate Floor Wood/laminate tends to look very crisp and rich. It is good choice for a bathroom for many practical reasons. It is very easy to clean, and if you ve decided to use a wood/laminate flooring option in the rest of your home, installing it in your bathroom would create a cohesive look. Vinyl Page 10

Vinyl is historically the most popular choice for bathroom flooring. It comes in sheets or tiles and is very easy to clean. It also holds up quite well under the wet and humid atmosphere. Carpet really! Carpet isn t generally the first choice on the list when a homeowner is considering bathroom flooring options. However, carpet that is both water and stain resistant does exist! Carpeted bathroom floors are cozy, warm, and inviting. Also, choosing carpet opens up an array of color and pattern options for your floor. Concrete - Creative Alternative! Flooring your bathroom with oversized concrete tiles tends to create a consistent feel about the room, as opposed to the active texture of small, individual tiles. However, concrete also provides the practicality expected from the other options. Page 11

Chapter VII: Area Rugs The modern trend for interior design has begun to lean toward hardwood flooring these past few years. While it s obvious that carpet is still widely used and admired, hardwood floors are experiencing a distinct rise in popularity. Even the most avid hardwood- lover can become discouraged, however, by the flat consistency of the hardwood floor. As a way to differentiate the design and accent their home s décor styling, the style- savvy homeowners are using area rugs. Area rugs provide a soft look, complementary design element, and are trendy addition to any room. Here is a list of the most loved choices! Plush A plush rug is rich, usually made of cotton, silk, or wool, (or a combination of these) characterized by having a soft, long nap. Textured Frieze Berber Cut & Loop Patterned A textured rug is characterized by interwoven strands of fabrics, creating an eclectic variation of a usual rug type. These rugs are excellent for homeowners with lots of color or an inconsistent style, as they will blend with nearly everything. A frieze rug is defined by tightly twisted sets of fibers that make up the rug s nap. Often, this style is referred to simply as twist. A berber rug is also known as a berber fleck rug. This type of rug has tiny flecks of color interwoven amongst the main color of the rug. A cut & loop rug consists of tightly looped fibers. The loops can be level loops or loops with varied length, creating texture. A patterned rug is characterized by a consistent, and generally symmetrical, sequence of shapes or designs, distinguished by color changes in the woven fibers. If you find your hardwood floor feeling a little flat, or simply miss the plush, cushion feel of a carpeted floor, it s time to go out and find an area rug to liven up your living space! Page 12
