Imagine how it will feel to Be Alive in the discovery of your life's passion! Ahh, the age-old question: "What is my purpose in life?" Imagine being so clear on the answer that you spring out of bed every morning so excited to start your day. Imagine going to bed every night with joy and fulfillment from a hard day's work. Most of us don't wake up one day with the sudden realization that we've discovered our reason for being. We spend countless hours wondering, searching, and dreaming. It doesn't have to be a dream forever. It will take work to get there. It will take powerful action to discover our passion and purpose, and it will take powerful action to achieve our goals. And it will be so worth it. This guide is designed to help you discover your reason for being, but first: Why now? What makes you ready to discover your purpose? Ikigai Exercise Ikigai is a Japanese term which, loosely translated means "a reason to live," or our life's purpose. The diagram below shows the intersection between four main areas of life. What You Love PASSION MISSION What You're good at What the World Needs PROFESSION VOCATION What You can be paid for Copyright Bright Space Coaching, LLC 2
Ikigai Exercise Finding a balance between these four areas could be a path toward finding our purpose. Let's start with these questions: What activities / tasks / responsibilities do you love? What activities / tasks / responsibilities are you good at? What does the world need from you? What can you get paid for? Copyright Bright Space Coaching, LLC 3
Ikigai Exercise Now, let's brainstorm ways we can intersect these areas. What do you love that the world also needs? What do you love that you're also good at? What are you good at that you can be paid for? What does the world need that you can be paid for? Copyright Bright Space Coaching, LLC 4
Ikigai Exercise Let's put it all together. Think about how you can achieve balance in all four areas. Visualize your ikigai. What does it look like? Brainstorm some ways you might balance all four areas: What do you need to start doing to get there? What do you need to stop doing to get there? Copyright Bright Space Coaching, LLC 5
Fear & Overwhelm While the Ikigai exercise is a great way to start brainstorming and visualizing your best life, it can be overwhelming to try to achieve it. We tell ourselves a lot of stories about what we can and can't do. Fear holds us back from achieving our goals and dreams. We'll check in with that fear in this exercise. What makes you overwhelmed when thinking about your purpose? What about that makes it so overwhelming? How does this contribute to your level of confidence? Copyright Bright Space Coaching, LLC 6
Fear & Overwhelm Now, think about your fears when it comes to achieving your life's purpose. What stories are you telling yourself? How do you hold yourself back? What are you afraid of? What about that makes you afraid? What evidence do you have that disproves your fears? How does fear hold you back? How can you move forward? Copyright Bright Space Coaching, LLC 7
Journal Prompts If at this point, you still feel unsure about your life's purpose, consider the following journal prompts. Be real with yourself. Lose that "I already know this" thinking. Write down the first thing that comes to mind, then ask "is there more?" Complete as many questions as you need to dig deep into your passion and purpose. What makes you forget to eat and pee? What do you get so lost in that you lose track of time? What can you talk about for hours that when you talk about it, you light up? What did you love to do as a child? If you were financially secure, what would you do with your time? If you could be remembered for 3 things after you die, what would they be? What is working well for you in your current life & career - what do you find fulfilling, meaningful, enjoyable and important? What isn't working for you - what drains you, makes you stressed, or wastes your time? What specific activities have you done in a past/current job that you enjoy and find engaging? What specific activities do you dislike and never want to do again? How much time during an average week do you spend on things you dislike or are a waste of your time? Copyright Bright Space Coaching, LLC 8
Journal Prompts Continue with these questions for further clarity: What are your top 5 deeply held core values? How do your current life & work support or reflect those values? Which of your top 5 values are you ignoring or not giving enough attention? What lies are you telling yourself (and others) about who you are and what's important to you? How much risk and uncertainty are you willing to tolerate in finding and pursuing your passion and purpose? Taking Powerful Action Putting it all together The difference between where we are and where we want to go is what we do. It's one thing to discover our life's purpose and another thing entirely to go out there and make it happen. Now is the time to realize our dreams. Some of us are already on our way to living out our ikigai. Others have a little more work to do. Where do you fall on that continuum today? Where would you like to be next year? Consider those questions in the next exercise. Copyright Bright Space Coaching, LLC 9
