Table of changes Change No. Date Scope Amdt 1 2008 Amended to update referenced standards. Foreword This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS/TC 038, Textiles, in accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This document was published in July 2008. This document supersedes SANS 1261-3:2007 (edition 2). A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment No. 1. SANS 1261 consists of the following parts, under the general title Performance requirements for retail textiles: Part 1: Household piece-goods and articles. Part 2: Piece-goods for women's and girls' wear. Part 3: Piece-goods for men's and boys' wear. Annex A is for information only. Compliance with a South African National Standard cannot confer immunity from legal obligations. Introduction In most instances in this part of SANS 1261, no requirements are specified for fibre content or structural details such as mass per area, threads per length, weave, or knit structures, although it is recognized that these properties will largely determine the essential character and the aesthetic appeal of a fabric. Setting these properties outside the scope of this part of SANS 1261 has been deliberate in order to allow the widest possible application of the standard and the greatest flexibility of manufacture. The main purpose is to provide a standard that will accommodate the prevailing retail demands for textiles while at the same time ensuring that these textiles will be acceptable in respect of their basic performance properties (for example, strength, dimensional stability and colour fastness). The emphasis throughout is on these basic properties. Frequently made claims pertaining to retail textile piece-goods for men s and boys wear (such as "crease resistant", "fully shrunk" and "7-year quality") are not covered by the range of tests specified, and compliance with the requirements in this part of SANS 1261 cannot be taken as a substantiation of such claims. Reaffirmed and reprinted in March 2016. This document will be reviewed every five years and be reaffirmed, amended, revised or withdrawn.
