CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of Study Reality is the condition which really occurs and can be seen by everyone, and known as the fact. Basically reality could not be avoid, but we have to face in. Based on oxford dictionary, reality is the true situation and the problems that actually exist in life. As we know, reality has different from the dream that we all know is the opposition. Everybody dreams. That s right, everybody dreams. Dream is the condition that occurs when the unconscious states during certain stages of sleep and the content of dreams are could not be understood. There are many interpretations about the dream and it is depend on someone s perception, and condition in real life. In my opinions, there are two kind of dream based on the condition (conscious and unconscious). From the conscious condition, dream is something that the most we want or something that our mind desire. Unconscious dream is something in our subconscious state where anything can happen and anything is possible. From the dream I have ever experienced I can show the fact about the dreams, that is; usually we forget about our dreams when awakened from our sleep, and we are not only dream about what we have experienced, but we can also see something that may come in the future even though the content very impossible. 1

2 Hogarth Press says (in Freud 1990) he explained that dreams as the result of manifestations of our deepest desires, often relating to repressed childhood memories or obsessions. According to Aristotle (Freud 1900:5) dream is defined as the psychic activity of the sleeper, as much as someone is asleep. G. William Domhoff the author of Finding Meaning in Dreams :1996 says that the dreams reflect the thoughts and concerns of a dreamer s waking life. Based Domhoff statement, it means dream is a reflection of real life. No doubt how many the effects, dreams can affect a person's life, which means the dreams have relation with reality such as the dream experienced by Santiago, he made dream comes true on Paulo Coelho s novel. Literary work has a significance meaning to comprehend the human s existence with this inner-self problem and mental personality. Since literature is the composition of human mind, can be said that literary works related toward human psychology. As the father of psychoanalytic, Sigmund Freud introduces his theory in 1856. The Alchemist is a novel by Paulo Coelho. This novel was published in Portuguese at the first time with a title O Alquimista in 1988. The Alchemist tells about the story of an Andalusian boy who decides to take a journey based on his dream. Believing a repeated dream to be prophetic, Santiago decides to travel and take a journey. Santiago begins his journey accompanying by his sheep because he is a shepherd. Many risk and danger along his journey to Egypt, he finds a lot of obstacles and defiance. Along the journey, Santiago meets a lot of people that teaches about life, sign, the world, and the God.

4 First place on his journey he meets and old Gipsy who helps him to interpret his dream and an old king named Melchizedek who suggests Santiago to sell his sheep as the cost to travel toward Egypt. Think about the long journey, Santiago decides to sell his ship follow an old king suggestion. In the way of the story, Santiago also met another person such as; Shopkeeper, Englishman, Fatima, the Alchemist, and Coptic monk. At last of the story Santiago find his treasure as he find on his dream, and it is not in Egypt but in Andalusia where he was dreaming and begins his journey. But Santiago got something that more important than the treasure as he get on his dream, that is the knowledge. The research paper has some interested point for the reader. It can be seen by character and characterization, setting, plot, and style.character and characterization in the novel are described as clearly, so the readers can know about the strategy uses by Santiago to reach the destination and get the treasure follows his dream. The readers also can know about what is the Alchemist.Setting from the novel the readers can know when and where the story occurs. This story occurs long time ago in Andalusia and along the way to Egypt. Plot in the novel begans since Santiago dreams when he sleep in the old church until he decides to took a journey and get the treasure as he get on is dream.style used here is style of language. It is very simple because the novel uses a language that uses by people everyday. So the readers can read and understand the novel easily.theme from the novel is relation between dream and reality experienced by Santiago. Dream is an event or condition that occurs at the unconscious state.reality is the opposite and

5 occurs at the conscious condition which happen according the fact. Sometimes the dream can affect the reality and what happened in the dreams can turn into reality. Here I will show the reasons why the researcher is interested in analyzing this novel. First reason is because the researcher is interested in the story of life strategy and adventure that has been reflected in the story of this novel. In my opinion it is first point that makes this novel very interesting. Second reason is because the main character is a very simple boy who is able to achieve his dream that most people is impossible to do. This concept is very great, because anyone can dream but only less of them may able to realize their dream. Third is because the researcher found an amazing fact that dream and reality are related based the beginning story to the end. That s why the researcher was very interested about the novel and would to reveal the relation between dream and reality. Based on the reason above, the researcher is interested to conduct a research on analyzing the relation between dream and reality experienced by Santiago. As long as dream becomes someone desire and it is related to the id, ego, and superego, the appropriate approach that can be used to analyze Santiago s dream is psychoanalytical approach. For this research, the researcher wises to take title of the research Relations Between Dream and Reality Reflected in The Alchemist Novel by Paulo Coelho (1993) : Psychoanalytic Approach.
