Clean metal inserts and let dry. Seal wood parts and metal inserts with multipurpose sealer. Lightly re-sand the wooden areas of the boxes. Stain the insides & bottoms of the boxes with Walnut Gel Stain. Trace the detail patterns onto tracing paper. Painting Instructions: General Instructions: For the Intermediate painter all shading is done by first side-loading a #12 Shader Brush and floating the shade on the edge of the object and then apply the mopping technique to cover a larger area of shading. Highlighting is done with mopping method. For the Beginner painter all shading is done by side-loading a #12 Shader brush and floating the shade on the edge of the object and then use the dry-brush technique to cover a larger area of shading. Highlighting is done using the dry-brush method. (Anywhere that you see a mix with the numbers in parenthesis (2:1) it is the mixing ratio - 2 parts of the first color to one part of the second color.) 1

Basecoat the metal panels with a mix of Bittersweet Chocolate + Cadmium Orange + Cool White (5:4:1). Put some of this mix in a covered container in case you need to touch up the background when you re done painting. Transfer the pattern without details. Large box: Mix Cool White + Grey Sky (5:1). Basecoat the cloth and the tomatoes, leaving the spaghetti dark. Red tomatoes- Paint them Cadmium Orange. Highlight large areas with Bright Yellow (center top on small tomato/ center left on large.) Remember highlights are done with mopping or dry-brush technique. Side load Tomato Red and float along the outer edges of the tomatoes. Float behind the green tomato, above the cloth and along the grooves on the large one. Float above the spaghetti and along the grooves of the small one. Add darker areas with Bittersweet + Tomato Red (1:2). Create shadows with Bittersweet Chocolate on the darkest areas. Large tomato s stem is painted with a liner brush using Antique White + Bittersweet Choc (2:1). Darken at base of stem with Bittersweet Choc. Dab on highlights of Antique White. Small tomato center is Antique White. Float Arbor Green across top. Use liner and dab Bittersweet across the very top. The shine highlights are Cool White, apply them slowly one layer at a time (mopped or dry-brushed) with a final dot of full paint in the center of the brightest highlights. Green Tomato- paint Arbor Green. Highlight large areas with Bright Yellow on the front& sides of the tomato and behind the center circle. Add dark areas with Hauser Dark green across the back, along all the groove lines and on the very bottom of the tomato. Use liner brush and dot some water thinned Bittersweet Choc blemishes on to the tomato (the large red one too). Paint the shine highlights the same as the other tomatoes. The center is done the same as the small tomato. Spaghetti- paint Antique White following the natural horizontal pattern of the spaghetti. Thin down Bittersweet Choc + Antique White (1:2) with water and wash lines of shading in. When dry use #0 liner and pull long thin lines of Bittersweet Choc to give the appearance of individual spaghettis. Add a few lines with Bright Yellow. Add highlights only to the spaghetti lying outside the jar with a liner brush and Antique White + Cool White (1:3). Define the ends more with this color. Add final highlights by adding more Cool White to the mix. Jar- Mix Grey Sky + Soft Black (3:1). Side load shader brush and float along the outside of the jar. When dry, mop (or dry-brush) this color to create the corner, edges, & the bottom ring of jar. Use a liner brush to create the measure guides and the top lip of jar. Add more Soft Black to the mix and stroke to the right of each measure guide mark. Add soft Cool White highlights to the bottom edge of jar and the L shine near the bottom. Use liner to add a tiny highlight to the measure guides lines. Create a shine mark with Cool White on the jar center corner, throat and on the center of the lip, keeping them in line with each other. The jar s metal ring is painted a mix of Bright Yellow + Antique White (1:1). Float Bittersweet Choc on the upper thick edge of the ring, on the bottom thin edge, and on the inside to create the twist marks. Deepen the darkest areas with Soft Black. Highlight with a mix of Antique White + Cool White (1:1) along the edges of the thin rim to the right, the top of the thin rim on the left and the lower portion of the thick ring. Brighten the lightest areas by adding more Cool White. Use Bittersweet and a liner brush to create the little ripple teeth marks. Add about three Cool White teeth marks in line with the highlight on the glass. Also add a Cool White shine mark on the left rim in line with the shine on the glass. Cloth- Side load in Soft Black and float everywhere a section of cloth goes behind another. Float along the edge of the cloth to create the hem, under the tips of spaghetti, behind the spaghetti and under the green tomato. Add all the other shadows on the cloth with either the mop or dry-brush technique, creating soft areas of folds and wrinkles. Use liner brush and dab small washy marks 2

of Soft Black on to the hem. Highlight Cool White along the center of the folded piece of fabric, the top of the cloth from tomato to jar top, where the cloth comes up in front of the spaghetti, and where the cloth bends to go over the table. The shadow on the back wall behind the large tomato is a wash of Soft Black. Side load in Bittersweet and float a vague line where the wall meets the table. Mix together Cadmium Orange + Tomato Red (2:1) and use the #1 liner to paint a border line. Small box: Transfer pattern for vegetables. Paint all 3 vegetables with one coat of Grey Sky. Onion- Base coat with Antique White. Use #0 liner to add fine lines on onion with Cadmium Orange + Bittersweet (1:1). Side load and float Bittersweet around the outside of the onion center, along the right side of the onion and along the right side where the onion meets the garlic. Using mopping (dry-brush) technique, add Cadmium Orange to the top spreading down toward the right side, along the very bottom and a small amount on the left side. When dry add a little water to some Bright Yellow and lightly glaze this over the onion. When dry, add water to Soft Black and glaze the shadow behind the garlic on to the onion. Highlight a Cool White ring around the center just outside the bittersweet area. When dry add the shine highlights to the lower right/center. The center is painted Grey Sky + Antique White + Cool White (1:1:2). Paint little lines to create the paper look with Bittersweet Choc. Side load and float Bittersweet Choc to the dark folded areas. Add tiny lines of Cool White for highlights. Pepper- Paint with a mix of Cadmium Orange + Tomato Red (1:1). Side load in Tomato Red + Soft Black (2:1) and lightly float dark areas along grooves, across bottom and behind stem. Build up the darker shaded areas and add some softer areas with mopping technique. Highlight with Cadmium Orange on the raised areas of the pepper and in front of the stem near the garlic. This will need to be done a few times to build it up. Deepen darkest shaded areas with Soft Black. Mop the Shine highlights on with Cool White on the lower bumpy areas, applying them slowly one layer at a time with a final dot of full paint in the center of the brightest highlights. The stem is painted Arbor Green. Side load in Hauser Dark Green and float on the length of the stem facing up, and at the base of the stem. Highlight in the center of the length of stem with Cool White and float along the very tip at the cut area. The cut end is Antique White. Float Bittersweet Choc where the cut area meets the Arbor green area. Garlic- Use liner brush and add lines down the garlic with Grey Sky + Soft Black (3:1). Use the same mix to float the left side of the garlic, everywhere there is a groove, along the bottom and where the garlic bumps meet the neck. Create the darkest areas by adding more Soft Black to mix and going over. Highlight with Grey Sky + Cool White (1:3), on the left side of the neck, on the front-center garlic bump, the bump next to the front on the right and a small reflected light area on the left side. Use the liner and softly stroke lines here and there between the dark lines. Add small shine highlights with Cool White on the right side of the front bump and on the right bump and a small stroke on the right of the neck. Add some Antique White to the left of the front bump to tint. If you feel the garlic isn t white enough add some water to Cool White and glaze over the entire garlic but don t get too white. The raffia top of the garlic is painted with the #0 liner using Antique White + Grey Sky (1:1), just pull little wavy strings down. Add more strings with Bittersweet Choc and then some with Cool White. The shadows on the table and on the back wall behind the onion are a wash of Soft Black. Side load in Bittersweet and float a vague line where the wall meets the table. Mix together Cadmium Orange + Tomato Red (2:1) and use the #1 liner to paint a border line. 3

Paint the outside of the wooden areas of the boxes with Arbor Green. On both ends of the small and large box, measure from the bottom of the box up ¾ inch and paint a ¼ inch stripe with Bittersweet Choc. And measure from the bottom of the box up 1 & 3/8 inches and paint a ¼ inch stripe with Tomato Red + Cadmium Orange (1:1). Use this Red color to paint the wooden handles also. Finishing: Sign your masterpiece. Let dry and rest. Apply one coat of Jo Sonja Clear Glaze Medium. Let dry again. Varnish with 2-3 coats of water-based varnish. 4
