AP STUDIO 2D ART SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2018 AP Studio Art 2D is a college class and requires a significant amount of time outside of class to meet the requirements of the portfolio; relatively twice as much time will be spent working on your portfolio out of class as in. Over the summer you will need to be committed to 6-7 hours per week to complete the assignments. Be sure to review the AP Central 2D portfolio requirements by going on line to https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-studio-art-2-ddesign/portfolio. There are many sites on line that have portfolio examples and you are free to look over them. Remember you cannot copy another s works. Your original piece must show at least a 70% change from the inspiration piece you want to emulate. You will complete 6 quality compositions as your AP Studio Art 2D class preparation which may end up being breadth or concentration pieces. These assignments will be due the first day of class. Please consider an area of concentration, in which a series of 12 compositions reflect a common theme. Summer Assignment: Pick 4 or all 6 assignments out of the following suggestions and two of your choice for a total of 6 compositions. Final projects may be no bigger than 18 x24. You could do 6 different assignment or all 6 could be the same assignment done a different way or in a different medium. All works must be completely finished works of art that show a complete range of value, tones, and shades. You may choose any medium to work with. You may use pencil, pen and ink, marker, watercolor, acrylic, oil, oil pastel, chalk pastel, charcoal, mixed media, etc Use a variety of mediums. You may not use any type of published image. If you draw in pencil, 1

please do not smudge the pencil to create value, I want to see value through the pencil marks. Avoid plagiarism! AP Central is serious about artists who copy others work. Composition Assignments: Compositions and sketchbook assignments must be fully finished and take up the entire piece, page, or canvas. Draw an object submerged in water. You can submerge it in a clear container and view from the side, view it from above, of have the object half in and half out of the water to observe the distortion. A Still Life that contains at least 3 shiny objects. Make sure you consider the light reflection and images seen in the shiny objects. A still life A piece that depicts an emotion. Try to have the colors or marks/brush strokes convey the emotion that you chose. A Self Portrait uses complimentary, analogous or split-complimentary color scheme from an interesting angle. Draw a close-up of a multi piece object, pay close attention to the details. Create a composition on anything but paper. Create a composition created from text. A figure drawing of a person in motion (running, walking, dancing, etc ) 2

A landscape that includes a building or a group of buildings. There are many well-known artists that choose to live in this area for all the wonderful outdoor areas to draw. Be sure to consider composition and perspective when choosing your subject. Image of the same item enlarged nine different ways A memory from your childhood. Illustrate a song of your choice. Do not include any lyrics or words in the piece. Create the inside of something: a drawer, your car, refrigerator, etc Draw an object in daylight and then again at night by artificial light. Fill 2 pages with a collage of images and words that appeal to you. You must add at least 2 hand drawn images that overlap. Create a new design or improvement to an object that currently exists. Draw mundane objects. Illustrate a dream that you have had and incorporate it into a detailed drawing of your eye. Included are visual examples of sketchbook items. Please use this as an example of AP expectations for your sketchbook. Your final compositions must start off as a sketch to be found in your sketch book. Of course they may change in the final composition as art tends to morph. 3
