Please purchase the novels instead of checking them out from the library as you will be asked to have your texts in class during the early weeks of the school year for literature activities centered around the books. For each novel selected, you must also complete the assignment enclosed in this summer reading packet. Once completed, you can either bring the assignment into school on the first day or email it at any time over the summer to Ms. Nicole Kridos, 3 rd grade teacher, to nkridos@hilleldayschool.org Enjoy your reading! Have a fantastic summer! Required Reading (Choose 1): Frindle by Andrew Clements (ISBN: 0689818769) Nick is an average kid in the fifth grade. He has a mean spelling teacher who always makes the kids use the dictionary. One day Nick's friend spots a pen on the ground, and Nick starts calling it a frindle. The new word is a big hit in Nick's class and finally throughout the whole school. People all over the world are saying the new word. Is the word a big hit, or will Nick get in trouble for it? OR *The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary (ISBN: 0380709244) Living in a knothole in a hotel room, young Ralph has seen plenty of families come and go, some more generous with their crumbs than others. But when young Keith and his parents check in to the hotel, Ralph gets his first chance to check out. He has always fantasized about venturing beyond the second floor, maybe even outside. Curiosity overcomes caution, and Ralph must have a go at Keith's toy motorcycle and undergoes many adventures.
