Data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry show that turnover reached $3.3 billion in the fiscal year 2012-13. This was after the segment recorded a 10 percent jump from the previous period. Revenue from April 2013 to January 2014 amounted to $2.8 billion, marking a 21 percent improvement year over year. Earnings are predicted to surge by 15 percent and surpass the $3.8 billion target for 2013-14. The bullish outlook is mainly attributed to rising demand from China, Africa and Latin America. Home accessories sales totaled $516 million from April 2013 to the first month of this year, up 14 percent from the period prior. The growth is credited to strong demand for ornamental items, specifically candles, sculptures and lamps in the US, the EU and the UAE. Income from vases and pottery amounted to $24.4 million in 2012-13 on the back of robust sales from the US, Germany and the UK, which accounted for roughly one-half of shipments.

Garden ornament exports reached $17.6 million in 2012-13, $1.8 million more than the amount posted from a year earlier. Stable demand from the US, the UK and Australia boosted deliveries. Faced with intensifying competition in the region, domestic manufacturers are stressing innovation to remain viable. Makers are launching models made of plant-based inputs amid the growing demand for sustainable goods. Cane and bamboo, in particular, are widely used as they can be readily procured from local vendors. Instead of wood pulp, enterprises are creating paper products from banana and cotton fibers, thus reducing the need to cut trees. In addition, these materials are versatile to be woven in various combinations, allowing makers to differentiate their products better from their foreign counterparts. Aside from exerting efforts to keep up with the latest trends, suppliers are modernizing facilities by emphasizing mechanization. Several manufacturers have started incorporating electric metalworking equipment such as lathes, and cutting, sanding and drilling machines. This approach helps companies boost efficiency and reduce manpower outlay. To further enhance workers machine-usage skills, the national government, with financial and technical assistance from the United Nations Development Programme, has established the Metal Handicrafts Service Center. Located in the city of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh state, the facility organizes training sessions aimed at teaching craftsmen on how to use advanced tools and equipment. It also offers courses on various techniques such as electroplating, lacquering, sandblasting and powder-coating. Companies are modifying their export strategies to prop up sales. Instead of focusing largely on traditional destinations such as the US and the EU, suppliers are now eyeing customers from emerging markets, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. This strategy is deemed vital as manufacturers continue to strive to remain viable and sustain healthy export figures. The soaring cost of labor is considered as the primary roadblock facing the sector. Because of the surging manpower outlay, some buyers are shifting their purchasing activities to more economical hubs such as China and Vietnam. As part of its reforms, the national administration has authorized state governments to independently set the minimum wage in their jurisdictions to offset rising living costs. In Delhi, where most head offices and factories are based, workers receive between $152 and $185 per month, depending on the skill level. Pay rates in Uttar Pradesh start at $98. Wages in the state of Haryana are from $100 to $105. To save on manpower expenditure, several suppliers are forced to cut jobs while others resort to subcontracting. Assembly, molding and carving are some of the most commonly farmed out production processes. Compounding the difficulty of manufacturers is the increasing cost of raw materials. In January, the price of steel went up from $607 to about $650 per metric ton due to rising input costs and freight charges. This month, steelmakers are set to raise quotes by at least $8 per metric ton amid strong demand from the

construction sector. In addition, prices of base metals such as aluminum and nickel have surged by nearly 12 percent since December last year because of the rupee s depreciation. Paper and wood, meanwhile, have become more expensive by at least 5 and 10 percent, respectively. Finding new export markets is identified as another stumbling block. Because India-made products are usually 5 to 15 percent more expensive compared with those from other sourcing centers, suppliers find it hard to draw in new customers abroad. India is mainly losing orders to China and Vietnam, where makers usually offer lower-priced items. To help companies address this issue, the government enacted a series of regulations, including the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development act. Aside from skills training and capital lending, this scheme provides marketing assistance to SMEs by promoting their products to overseas buyers through trade shows and related industry events. Because slashing prices will greatly affect their profit margins, most manufacturers offer flexible MOQs to attract more buyers abroad. Some enterprises accept a minimum order of one piece for paintings, sculptures, statues and birdbaths. Other require at least 50 pieces for smaller items such as figurines, planters, flowerpots and candle holders. Industry composition Government statistics indicate that there are more than 7,000 handicraft makers across the country. The majority of suppliers are locally owned, with nearly 70 percent considered as export-oriented. Close to 6 million people are employed by the sector. Small enterprises typically have 10 to 20 employees. They operate workshops covering an area of at least 200 sqm. Most manufacturing steps, including assembly and polishing, are subcontracted. The total monthly capacity is 6,000 pieces. Yearly income is less than $100,000. Midsize companies are often staffed by 20 to 60 personnel. Factory size is at least 7,000 sqm. All production processes are performed in-house. As many as 30,000 pieces are turned out every month. Annual revenue is from $100,000 to $1 million. Large suppliers are usually ISO compliant and have more than 100 workers, including design and QC teams. They own one to three plants measuring 10,000 to 50,000 sqm. Factories can assemble over 30,000 pieces per month. Earnings exceed $1 million annually. The city of Khurja in Uttar Pradesh state specializes in ceramic pottery and vases. It is home to over 20 exportoriented companies supplying various handicrafts to clients in the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Statistics show that there are more than 500 factories in Khurja. Moradabad is famous for its metalwork such as brass and bronze sculptures and statuettes. An estimated 600 home decor suppliers operate in the city. Firozabad city in Uttar Pradesh is known for its glass handicrafts. Wooden items are mostly created in Saharanpur district, where roughly 50,000 artisans engage in wood carving. The cities of Bangalore and Mysore are known for goods that adopt rosewood. The state of Tripura is considered as the primary sourcing center for cane and bamboo models. More than 10,000 craftsmen producing lamps, curtains, mats and baskets made of these natural fibers are currently based there. Rajasthan state is one of the major supply hubs for stone crafts. Marble decorative items such as figurines, busts and vases are largely created in the cities of Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Bikaner. Suppliers of paper products are mainly located in the region of Kashmir. The town of Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh state is regarded for its needlework. Supplier locations map
