Design Challenge The Challenge What kind of machine could be created using the Exquisite Corpse game, the 3Doodler pen and only a single plastic strand per participant? Overview Total Time:100 minutes (2 Class Periods) This challenge asks participants to apply some of the techniques used during the Surrealist Movement called the Exquisite Corpse. This parlor game will help to get the ideas flowing as participants become creative with Doodling simple machines. This is a fun introduction project to creativity and using the 3Doodler pen.

Challenge Background Take It Further This challenge inspires flexibility, collaboration and creativity during the innovation process. See how different results can be when played more than once, used as an ice-breaker for new teams. Fig.1 Fig.2 Before You Start Doodling We recommend using a DoodlePad or clear tape placed over paper as a foundation to keep your Doodles in place and so that you can peel them off with ease. During the early 20th century, a cultural and artistic movement called Surrealism explored the realm of dream and reality. A popular drawing game, Exquisite Corpse, allowed for artists to collaborate together to create fanciful creatures or elaborate humans. A paper would be folded into four sections (feet, legs, torso and head) and each artist would draw one section without knowing what the other artist had drawn before. Materials & Tools A. B. C. F. D. E. A. 3Doodler Pens and Plastic Strands of various colors (one per student, or have students work in pairs or small groups) B. Tools (from your 3Doodler box) plus needle-nose pliers or scissors for snipping plastic ends C. Clear plastic tape or DoodlePad for Doodling foundation D. Paper for Doodling foundation and extra sketching/note-taking space E. Drawing utensils (markers, pens or pencils) F. Camera or video recording device to document the Challenge and results

Challenge Organization Challenge Documentation Take photos & videos of your process using a camera. Document what to do and what not to do. Share your experience with the online community using #3DoodlerEDU! Challenges are organized into 50-minute periods so they can fit into a traditional classroom structure, or be combined into a single workshop with breaks in between activities. This Challenge is designed to have participants work in short sprints to quickly explore the concepts. Class 1: Imagine Total Time: 50 min. Imagine ( 50 min.) Step 1: Break up into teams of 4 participants each. Spend 20 minutes looking up surrealism, artists from the movement, and examples of Exquisite Corpse games. Step 2: For the next 20 minutes, pass around four pieces of paper folded in 4 like the example and create four Exquisite Corpse creatures with the team. Facilitator s Notes In Class 1, participants will explore their creativity and spontaneity by playing the Exquisite Corpse game. Walk the participants through folding the paper and where to start with drawing either the feet or head first. Step 3: For the last 10 minutes, each participant will write a statement on how this game could help with pushing the boundaries of your creativity in the challenge.

Class 2: Build, Present & Reflect Total Time: 50 min. Build ( 40 min.) Fig.3 Remember to Snip Those Ends We recommend pliers or scissors for snipping plastic ends. Make sure to keep your plastic ends clean to prevent clogs and jams. Snip plastic after removing it from the 3Doodler pen to make sure it s clean for the next time. Step 1: Each team member will be given a plastic DoodleStrand and a piece of paper with the name of a simple machine (lever, hook, screw, wedge, wheel or axle) to add to the team s Exquisite Machine build. Don t tell your teammates which simple machine you re going to add. Each team member will have 25 minutes to make their simple machine with the 3Doodler pen. Step 2: Teams will be given 15 minutes and a 5th plastic strand to figure out how all four of the simple machines will go together using the 3Doodler pen. Present & Reflect ( 10 min.) Each team will present and discuss their Exquisite Machine. Facilitator s Notes In Class 2, participants will build and present their Exquisite Machine. Make sure that participants are able to hide their work with boxes or books dividing up the table. Participants can make multiples of their simple machine but they will only receive one plastic strand each. Have participants select a different color so that it is easy to distinguish each machine piece. Step 1: Teams will name their machine and identify and demonstrate the machine s use and capabilities. Step 2: Teams will discuss how the Exquisite Corpse challenge changed the way they thought about how their simple machine could be used or adapted.
