PAINTING-BY-THE-SEA 2016 QUICK-DRAW Grab Your Brushes and join in! CAPE ANN PLEIN AIR s Quick-Draw Contest! Wednesday, October 12th, 2016 ~ Manchester-by-the-Sea The Painting-by-the-Sea Quick-Draw is a fun and fast-paced, plein air painting contest, open to any professional or amateur artist aged 18 years age or older who registers and follows the procedures defined within this document. The field is limited to 60 artists (plus any CAPA Juried Artists) on a first-come-basis. Paintings must be completed within a two-hour period, marked by the sounding of an official signal horn. Participating artists may use any two-dimensional medium (oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolors, etc.). No photography or digital media are allowed. Awards for exemplary work will be named by our esteemed quick-draw judge, Mark Shasha. WORK SIZE MUST NOT EXCEED 25 UNITED INCHES, UNFRAMED. Maximum working/painting size: 11x14 or the equivalent (10x15 8x16, etc.) Registration is open online at: www.capeannpleinair.com until 5pm, Friday, October 7th, 2016, and then at check-in on the morning of the event. Participation is limited, so registering in advance is strongly suggested. Any Artist who fails to comply with the procedures, terms and conditions here noted may be disqualified from receiving any awards.
REGISTRATION & FEES: Registration is required for ALL Quick-Draw artists, either online or at Check-In, Wednesday morning, October 12th. Early Registration is recommended, and is available on the Cape Ann Plein Air website, at: www.capeannpleinair.com By registering, you agree to all terms and conditions described in this document. Fees: A $15 registration fee is payable at check-in. The event will be held rain or shine, and registration fees are non-refundable. Juried Cape Ann Plein Air artists are automatically registered for the Quick-Draw and do not pay any additional fee. All CAPA Applicants must register, but your registration fee is waived as well. All Quick-Draw artists (including juried CAPA artists) MUST sign in at the check-in center 8:00am ~ 9:30am: ARTIST CHECK-IN (Mandatory) The check-in center will be the Manchester Community Center, 40 Beach Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. The town offers multiple parking options, including street spaces, town lots and the MBTA parking lot, as noted on the map. Parking passes will allow you to park at these spots for longer than the posted times. AT CHECK-IN, EACH ARTIST WILL: Pick up a Name Tag. Fill it out and Please wear it! Pick up a Parking Pass. You must display this pass clearly on your car s dashboard to avoid ticketing. CAPA will not be responsible for any issues arising from passes not properly displayed. Normal parking restrictions (handicap spaces, hydrants, ramps, tow zones, no parking areas, etc.) are still in effect, and you can still be ticketed or towed for such violations.
Receive a Map delineating the contest boundaries, comprising of portions of downtown Manchester-by-the-Sea. Complete, sign, and submit a Limited Liability Agreement and W-9. No art sales will be processed for any artist who does not complete and submit these forms. These forms are also available via email. Canvases, panels and paper receive stamps. The back of each painting surface must be officially stamped to be considered valid for submission and judging. Artists may complete more than one piece, but all painting surfaces must be stamped. Pieces submitted without the official CAPA/Painting-by-the-Sea stamp will not be accepted or displayed. Receive your Buy My Art vouchers to display on your easel throughout the event. Each piece of artwork submitted for judging and sales must display a Buy My Art voucher. Additional vouchers will be available through volunteers, for those artists who complete more than one work. AFTER YOU CHECK-IN Select a painting location within the Quick-Draw boundaries shown on the map provided, and set up your easel. All work must be painted onsite, en plein air in the allotted two hours. Do NOT begin painting until you hear the signal at 10:00am! Artists may paint scenes outside of the boundaries, as long as their easel is set up within the boundaries. No photographs will be allowed into the contest. Write your name on your Buy My Art vouchers and display them prominently on your easel. Wait for the audible start signal at 10:00 am. No painting is to begin before that horn! You must start with a stamped, blank canvas. A base tone is fine, but nothing may be pre-drawn or pre-painted. 10:00am ~ 12:00pm: ARTISTS PAINT An audible signal will mark the start and stop times, and all artists must comply with these signals.
12:00pm ~ 12:45pm: TURN-IN COMPLETED FRAMED ARTWORKS Artists bring your completed and framed artwork to the Manchester Historical Museum (Trask House) located at 10 Union Street, Manchesterby-the-Sea. Volunteers will be available to aid and receive your work. Make sure to legibly complete the Buy My Art vouchers with name, title and sale price for each piece of artwork. Affix a three-part Buy My Art voucher to your artwork (bottom, right) so the judge and potential buyers can see it clearly. (Only Painting-by-the-Sea volunteers should remove these vouchers.) Cape Ann Plein Air assumes no liability or responsibility for artists artwork. To protect your work, please remain with your artwork at all times, until it is turned in. Once your work has been turned in, artists are free to leave, and return in the evening for the announcement of awards. All pieces must be properly framed for a clean, professional and attractive presentation. 1:00pm ~ 5:00pm: HANGING & JUDGING by CAPA Painting-by-the- Sea officials, volunteers, and our judge at the Trask House 6:00pm: RECEPTION OPENING Art Sales will begin 6:30pm: ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS Juried CAPA Artist Awards: The Joan van Roden First Prize- $500; Second Prize- $300; Third Prize- $200; Honorable Mention- $150.00 Gift Certificate to the Jack Richeson Co. Non-Juried Artist Awards: Best Painting by a non-juried Artist- $500; Second Prize- $300; Third Prize- $200; Honorable Mention- $125.00 Gift Certificate to the Jack Richeson Co. Winning artists will be asked to come forward with their work, to receive their awards and be photographed with the judge and any prize sponsors.
9:00pm: CLOSE OF RECEPTION. Artists may remove any remaining artwork from the Trask House at the end of the evening, but the exhibition will be allowed to hang, and sell until Sunday, October 16th. ALL WORK MUST BE COLLECTED BY SUNDAY BETWEEN 1:00-2:00PM. RECEPTION ART SALES All Painting-by-the-Sea Quick-Draw artwork available for sale must display a completed three-part Buy My Art voucher. Volunteers will assist artists and buyers with the sales process. To transact a sale, volunteers will remove the three-part Buy My Art voucher, and escort the purchaser to the sales area. When the transaction has been completed, the volunteer will affix the RED portion, marked SOLD, to the hanging artwork. The artist s copy/ receipt can be picked up at the end of the evening of the reception, at the sales area. CAPA/Painting-by-the-Sea committee members will complete all sales of Quick-Draw artwork at the designated sales area. Artists who sell their work will receive 60% of the sale price. CAPA s 40% commission supports local art awareness, education, and future CAPA events. CAPA must report sales tax when the total amount of sales, commissions and prize money earned by an artist at the event is $600 or more. CAPA will mail a completed W-9 to any artists who had sales, commissions, or prize money for more than $600, with their sales/ commission check. Artists will be mailed their sales/commission check, as soon as final accounting is completed. We estimate this time to be within 10 days the event s end.
