TAIWANESE PHOTOGRAPHERS 1890s - 2015 The Silver Halide Era - Aura Of Times SAFOTO Web Galleries Monograph Curated by Chang Chao-Tang and Chien Yun-Ping In conjunction with the National Taiwan Museum Of Fine Arts, Taichung, Taiwan Constructing the historical context of Taiwanese art is a core mission of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and the research on the historical view of photography and the display and promotion of photographic art are major tasks at the moment. In response to the Ministry of Culture s Rescue of National Photography Assets and Establishment of National Photography Center project, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts has specially invited Chang Chao-Tang and Chien Yun-Ping to curate the The Silver Halide Era Aura of Times : Vintage Photography Prints by Taiwanese Photographers 1890s - 2015, which focuses on the Silver Halide Era of Taiwanese photography as the foundation for the construction of the historical view of photography in Taiwan. Through the theme exhibition, the curators systematically compiled, organized, and studied the history of Taiwanese photography. In addition to researching and collecting precious assets of Taiwan s image culture, and representing the historical memory of the people and the soil, the organization and the research results of the exhibition have helped the Ministry of Culture s National Photography Center in collecting and accumulating research materials and records. The invention of photography has opened up another window for the history and memory of men; the basic technique of silver halide processing has had great influences for nearly a century in the history of photography. Today, everyone has a camera phone, and we are in an age where digital images are easy to obtain and in excess, but the exploration of historical meaning and social pulses, and aesthetic expressions presented through silver halide photography in Taiwan has profound research values and temporal significance. Therefore, through the curators extensive and comprehensive research and invitation, the exhibition showcases the most iconic photographers and their works, and discovers some rarely seen vintage pictures with great historical and cultural significances in private possessions. These not only have enhanced the content of the exhibition, but also enriched the collection and compilation of Taiwan s precious assets of photography. The Silver Halide Era Aura of Times : Vintage Photography Prints by Taiwanese Photographers 1890s - 2015 features a Documents Section and a Vintage Prints Section. The Documents Section features 61 exhibits, including rare and valuable original overprint glasses, tri-color carbon prints, and photo albums from 1890 to 1945. The Vintage Prints Section features 31 domestic photographers and 254 photographic works spanning across three centuries.
These works include the pictures of everyday life and memorial portraits shot by amateur or professional pioneers of Taiwanese photography back in the Japanese Colonial period, as well as precious images of how the people and nation broke through and transformed in the ensuing years following WWII. Furthermore, the exhibition also showcases works of freelance photography and reportage photography with themes of social concerns, minority groups, and social marginality from 1970 to 1990, as well as contemporary creative images created by new generation artists after 2000. The photographers featured at this exhibition are from different time periods, but they have all used the same basic material of silver halide to create unique photographic features of Taiwan and established the foundation of Taiwanese photographic culture. Special thanks to Mr. Chang Chao-Tang and Mr. Chien Yun-Ping for curating the exhibition, and gratitude to all participating photographers, the National Museum of History, and Frank C. Chen Foundation for Culture and Education for their support and generosity, as well as the collectors and their families for agreeing to loan the works to the exhibition. Finally, sincere thanks to National Taiwan Museum for the promotion and marketing of the event. Through exhibiting the history and development of silver halide photography in Taiwan, we hope to present the collective social memory and share it with everyone in Taiwan.
