BIOGRAPHY* * * * Kelsey*J.*Lien*holds*a*Master*of*Music*degree*in*Wind*Conducting*from*Texas*State* University* *San*Marcos*and*a*Bachelor*of*Music*Degree*in*Instrumental*Music* Education*from*The*University*of*Texas*at*San*Antonio.***He*also*attended*North* Dakota*State*University*for*a*year*as*a*graduate*student*in*the*saxophone*studio.*He* has*taught*elementary*music,*middle*school*band,*middle*school*orchestra*and*high* school*band*in*texas*public*schools.**he*has*taught*in*jourdanton*isd,*la*vernia*isd* and*currently*teaches*in*comal*isd.**** * Kelsey*has*been*playing*saxophone*since*1993.**It*has*since*become*his*favorite* thing*to*do.**he*has*played*in*many*settings,*including*jazz*band,*concert*band,* Orchestra,*Saxophone*Ensemble*and*Saxophone*Quartet.**As*a*soloist,*Kelsey*has* performed*ith*the*utsa*women s*choir,*the*san*antonio*children s*chorus*and* the*minnesota*state* *Moorhead/NDSU*University*Symphony*Orchestra.**Kelsey*has* also*performed*our*united*states*national*anthem*for*hill*country*karate,*the* American*Society*of*Karate,*The*San*Antonio*Stars,*The*San*Antonio*Rampage*and* the*5ztime*nba*world*champion*san*antonio*spurs.* * Kelsey*has*had*many*other*musical*experiences.**While*attending*UTSA,*Kelsey* played*piano*at*an*italian*restaurant.**he*has*also*given*private*lessons*for* saxophone,*clarinet,*trumpet,*french*horn*and*oboe.**kelsey*has*taught*at*the*hill* Country*Band*Camp*and*at*the*UTSA*Band*Camp.**He*as*also*the*Interim*Orchestra* Director*at*First*Baptist*Church*of*Universal*City,*TX.**Kelsey*likes*playing*many*of* the*band*instruments*and*has*played*saxophone,*clarinet,*french*horn,*trombone* and*tuba*in*many*different*bands.**one*of*his*favorite*things*to*do*is*play*the*oboe* part*on*soprano*saxophone.**that*skill*has*proven*to*be*quite*beneficial*on*multiple* occasions.**** * Kelsey*is*blessed*to*have*learned*from*so*many*great*teachers*and*mentors.*He* studied*ith*dr.*mary*ellen*cavitt*(music*education),*dr.*robert*rustoicz* (conducting),*dr.*kenneth*williams*(conducting),*mr.*morgan*king*(saxophone),*mr.* David*Debus*(Saxophone),*Dr.*Matthe*Patnode*(saxophone)*and*Dr.*Rodney*C.* Schueller*(conducting).**Kelsey*has*studied*additionally*ith*Dr.*Donald*K.*Miller* (conducting)*and*has*attended*the*james*houlik*saxophone*retreat*and*the*baylor* University*Conducting*Symposium.* * Kelsey*is*married*to*Shana,*a*flutist*and*middle*school*band*director.**They*got* married*in*2008*and*have*a*2zyear*old*daughter,*tabitha.**together*as*a*family*they* like*to*sim,*play*at*the*park*and*atch*mickey*mouse*and*other*disney* productions.** * * June*2015*

2008 Saxophone Care 1. Things that could damage the saxophone: a. extreme heat or cold (do not leave it in a car) b. letting somebody else hold the saxophone c. putting it together incorrectly d. opening the case upside don e. eating/drinking before playing f. dropping it/banging the case g. forcing it into the case/forcing the case to close h. holding it by keys and/or rods i. polishing it ith any chemical 2. Disassembling the saxophone: a. sab out the neck and the body b. ipe out the mouthpiece c. take the reed off the mouthpiece and put it in a reed case d. place in the case correctly. 3. Reed Care: a. soak reed before use, preferably in a cup of room temperature ater b. alays store reed in reed case ith a flat surface c. be careful to keep tip from touching anything d. it should be the last thing put on during assembly and the first thing taken off during disassembly. 4. Mouthpiece Care: a. mouthpieces are very fragile, hold them carefully, protect the tip b. alays store mouthpiece ith mouthpiece cap on, to protect mouthpiece c. hen not playing, put on mouthpiece cap, to protect reed and mouthpiece d. take mouthpiece off the neck before storing in the case e. take the reed off the mouthpiece before storing mouthpiece
Spring 2008 Assembling the Saxophone Parts of the Saxophone: End Cap Body Neck Mouthpiece Ligature Reed Mouthpiece Cap Neckstrap 1. Put case on the floor ith the top (label) side up. 2. Using cork grease, grease the cork on the neck (do this about once a eek). 3. Put on neckstrap. 4. Take the body out of the case, holding it by the bell, aay from keys. Hook neckstrap into position. Remove end plug. 5. Remove ligature and mouthpiece cap from mouthpiece. Place the mouthpiece on the neck cork in a slight tisting motion. It should cover approximately half to to-thirds of the neck cork. The flat side of the mouthpiece should be facing the floor. 6. Loosen the scres of the ligature. Place ligature on mouthpiece ith the ider end going on first. Make sure the scre heads are on the right. 7. Put the flat side of the reed to the flat side of the mouthpiece. The thin tip of the reed goes even ith the thin tip of the mouthpiece. Tighten the scres of the ligature gently so they don t get too tight. 8. Loosen scre in neck receiver of the body of the saxophone. Place the neck into the neck receiver in the body of the saxophone by sliding the neck straight in. Tighten scre gently. To disassemble, repeat the steps in the opposite order.
