Higher National Unit specification General information for centres Unit code: F4MY 34 Unit purpose: This Unit is designed to enable candidates to develop an understanding and knowledge of art and design influences on the development of architecture. Candidates will then focus on the analysis of a period in Scottish. On completion of the Unit the candidate should be able to: 1 Analyse the influences on the development of. 2 Analyse a period in Scottish. Credit points and level: 1 HN credit at SCQF level 7: (8 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7*) *SCQF credit points are used to allocate credit to qualifications in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). Each qualification in the Framework is allocated a number of SCQF credit points at an SCQF level. There are 12 SCQF levels, ranging from Access 1 to Doctorates. Recommended prior knowledge and skills: Access to this Unit is at the discretion of the centre. No previous knowledge is required for this Unit. However candidates would benefit from having a basic knowledge and understanding of the history of or Design. Core Skills: There are opportunities to develop the Core Skills of Communication at SCQF level 6 and Information Technology at SCQF level 5 this Unit, although there is no automatic certification of Core Skills or Core Skills components. Context for delivery: If this Unit is delivered as part of a Group Award, it is recommended that it should be taught and assessed within the subject area of the Group Award to which it contributes. Assessment: The Outcomes for this Unit can be assessed separately. Outcome 1 could be assessed by use of questions or extended essay. Outcome 2 could be assessed by a portfolio. Higher National Unit specification: statement of standards Unit code: F4MY 34 The sections of the Unit stating the Outcomes, Knowledge and/or Skills, and Evidence Requirements are mandatory. Where evidence for Outcomes is assessed on a sample basis, the whole of the content listed in the Knowledge and/or Skills section must be taught and available for assessment. Candidates should not know in advance the items on which they will be assessed and different items should be sampled on each assessment occasion. Outcome 1 Analyse the influences on the development of Knowledge and/or Skills Islamic Art and Design Arts and Crafts Movement Art Nouveau Modernism Evidence Requirements Candidates will need to provide evidence to demonstrate their Knowledge and/or Skills by showing that they can analyse the influences on the development of architecture by comparing and contrasting the main ideas and concepts within Islamic Art and Design, Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau, Modernism. The analysis must include examples of specific architecture and be supplemented by visual material for each aspect. Assessment Guidelines This Outcome could be assessed by the production of a report or extended essay. Visual material could include photographs, downloads or leaflets. Higher National Unit specification: statement of standards (cont) Outcome 2 Analyse a period in Scottish Knowledge and/or Skills Periods of Scottish Factors influencing the development of Scottish Evidence Requirements Candidates will need to provide evidence to demonstrate their Knowledge and/or Skills by showing that they can analyse a period in Scottish. Candidates must: select a period in consultation with tutor. source information and research period chosen. analyse the factors that influenced the development of architecture in the period chosen. This must include: context, climate, function, technology and materials, social, political and economic factors, and architectural style. Analysis should include the extent to which these factors influenced the development of architecture. Analysis must be supported by visual material. Assessment Guidelines Candidates could produce a portfolio on the period chosen. Visual material could include photographs, downloads, leaflets or video. Higher National Unit specification: support notes This part of the Unit specification is offered as guidance. The support notes are not mandatory. While the exact time allocated to this Unit is at the discretion of the centre, the notional design length is 40 hours. Guidance on the content and context for this Unit This Unit was developed as part of the HNC/D Architectural Conservation where it is a mandatory Unit. It is designed to (a) introduce candidates to the influence of art and design on and (b) factors influencing the development of Scottish from early settlements to key Scottish buildings of the twenty first century. Outcome 1 This Outcome introduces the candidate to the influence of art and design on the development of. Each topic should be explored in terms of objects, decorative arts, painting, design and the interconnection with architecture. The use of form, pattern, colour and materials that form the aesthetic language of each of the topics should be investigated. The work of individual architects, designers and artists can be used as exemplars to describe and illustrate the underpinning aesthetic, philosophical or ideological principles in each of the topics. Teaching of the topics should be contextualised to encourage the study of art and design developments from a social, cultural and historical perspective. Outcome 2 This Outcome introduces the candidate to the development of Scottish from the building of early settlements through to key buildings of the twenty first century. Features and factors which have influenced the development of Scottish are described and evaluated. The following categories and suggested topics identify key developments in Scottish, but are not exhaustive. Visits should be arranged to key buildings. The use of texts, leaflets and journals on architecture available from RIBA, RIAS, Historic Scotland and The National Trust for Scotland will provide a basis for the information that candidates will require to complete the assessment tasks for Outcome 2. The internet should be used as a resource for both learning Outcomes. Visits to museums, exhibitions and buildings could enhance the learner experience and facilitate a deeper understanding of art and design topics. All research material should be referenced and all assessment evidence should be organised, developed and presented in a manner appropriate to the candidate s programme of study. Higher National Unit specification: support notes (cont) Opportunities for developing Core Skills There are opportunities to develop aspects of the following Core Skills. Communication at SCQF level 6. Candidates will be required to read materials relating to the development of architecture. If candidates produce written reports, essays or portfolios this will provide opportunities to develop written Communication. Lecturers might use class discussions to deliver parts of the Unit and this would provide opportunities to develop oral Communication. Information Technology at SCQF level 5. This Unit offers candidates the opportunity to research, source information, and produce evidence using ICT. Open learning This Unit could be delivered by distance learning, which may incorporate some degree of on-line support. However, with regard to assessment, planning would be required by the centre concerned to ensure the sufficiency and authenticity of candidate evidence. Arrangements would be required to be put in place to ensure that the assessment, which is required to be at a single event, was conducted under controlled, supervised conditions. It will also introduce you to the development of Scottish from early settlements to key buildings of the twenty first century. The Unit is designed to be delivered as a mandatory Unit within HNC/D Architectural Conservation. The Unit will introduce you to: Islamic Art and Design Arts and Crafts Movement Art Nouveau Modernism factors influencing the development of Scottish context climate function technology and materials social, political and economic architectural style The assessment for Outcome 1 may be the production of a report illustrated with photographs, downloads or leaflets. The Assessment for Outcome 2 may be the production of a portfolio for a specified topic illustrated with photographs, downloads, leaflets or video. In undertaking this Unit you may have the opportunity to develop the Core Skills of Communication to SCQF level 6 and Information Technology to SCQF level 5.
