MEDIUM VOLTAGE COMPACT STARTER TYPE KAE up to 5 MW up to 17,5 kv up to 400 A

Mocotech presents the compact motor starter t ype KAE with integrated autotransformer, switches, control and many more advantages. CUSTOMER ADVANTAGES: Lowest starting current of all induction motor starting methods Minimum voltage drop in the power supply Reduction of required bus bar short circuit power Start with lower mechanical stress Increase of lifetime for drives Easy installation Low investment cost Proven starting method Rigid and reliable components All components in one cabinet only Integrated bypass and star point contactor or breaker Tailor-made transformer design Hot spot temperature supervision also for MV applications Less MV cables compared with traditional method Ample space for cable connection Small with only 1,6 square meter required floor space Self supporting structure No mains deformations due to harmonics No losses during bypass operation No environmental pollution Complete start up calculations under consideration of: Moment of inertia Available Required Lowest possible starting current Max. permissible voltage drop Available short circuit power Starting time optimization Limitation of star point voltage by air gap design 2

Renaissance of the Korndorfer-starting method Past difficult Formerly the Korndorfer starting method was complicated and expensive 3 MV panels for the 3 switches method 5 MV cables with 10 set of sealing ends Difficult engineering and design for coordination of panels, transformer, motor, driven load, cables and sealing ends. Large space requirement Today simple The KAE motor starter now makes the Korndorfer starting method compact, economic, compatible and customer-friendly. Two of the 3 switches are included together with the autotrans in the compact starter unit. A PLC coordinates the complete control and supervision including the third external mains cb. We care for design and coordination. You save time, space, investment and installation cost. 3

All position indicators are LED illuminated. The LEDs alternate between red / green and grey colour for the various conditions. 5

starting current starting current current current start time current current start time mains voltage mains voltage start time voltage voltage The upper chart shows the starting provided by the motor for direct on line starting (black curve). The purple graph depicts the required by the driven machine. The coloured graphs in between illustrate the motor for different starting voltages. The motor must always be higher than the counter. The chart in the middle represents the respective starting times. The lower chart shows the relation between starting and starting time. The purple line is the minimum (required by the driven machine). The different starting voltages result into different starting currents (see chart on top and in the middle). Black is the starting current for direct on line start, coloured are the different starting voltages with autotransformer (points in upper chart and graphs in the central chart). The different start currents result in different voltage drops in the mains power supply. The lower chart shows the mains voltage during motor start up (black graph for direct on line start, coloured graphs for different starting voltages). In order to compare the autotransformer start with other common start methods (starting reactor, electronic soft starter, etc.) charts for starting current and mains voltage are shown for these starting methods accordingly. The charts on top and in the middle show that the starting current is higher, this results in a larger voltage drop in the mains power supply (lower chart) compared to the start with autotransformer. Therefore the compact starter is the ultimate starting method in order to reduce the current at motor start up and to avoid voltage drop in the mains power supply network. 6

start step 1 start step 2 start step 3 During acceleration the motor current (M) is the addition of mains current (N) and star point current (S). The low mains current (N) results in a small mains voltage drop. The high motor current (M) ensures a high of the motor. The star point switch will be opened after the motor has reached its rated and before the by-pass switch closes. There is a transient change over without interruption of the motor power supply. The motor does not lose. High current peaks and voltage drop, as known in Y/A starting resulting from open transition and system immanent phase shift, cannot occur. After the by-pass switch is closed, the start-up is finished. The motor is ready for operation under load. Transformer design Dry type VPI = vacuum pressure impregnated Copper winding Insulation class H PTC sensors in the hot spot directly at the copper winding Min. 3 tapings Moisture proof design Noise reduced High quality electrical steel sheets Calculated air gap Self extinguishing Environmental friendly Ample terminal connection boards Full temperature protection at medium voltage by use of glass fiber transmission technology 7
