Hot and twisted shawl by Athanasia Andritsou Level: easy to medium Yarn used: Posh Yarn Valerie Heavy Lace Light Fingering / 3 ply 70% Merino, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere 594 meters / 100 grams For the sample 1 skein has been used = 594.4 meters (650.0 yards), 100 grams but the skein weighed over 100 grams so there were 7 more grams left. Needles used: 3mm (US 2.5)

The shape of the shawl is a deep triangle. Measurements: 125 cm width from one wing edge point to the other, 53 cm along the spine, days after blocking. BUT: You can actually knit it with any yarn: cobweb, lace, fingering, needles according to your feeling for airy lace and gauge is of no importance. There are 3 garter stitches in the beginning and 3 in the end of each row. These are always knitted (both on the right and the wrong sides of the shawl). The 1st stitch of both the right and the wrong sides of the shawl is always slipped purlwise with yarn held in the front. The charts do not show the garter stitches. There is one central stitch, which can be either: a. knitted inserting the right hand needle into the stitch one row below on the right side and purled on the wrong side or b. knitted on the right side, purled on the wrong side. Chart A shows half shawl, it does not show (include) the central st. Chart B1 shows the right side of the shawl, it shows (includes) the central st in light pink. Chart B2 shows the left side of the shawl, it does not show (include) the central st. Charts show only the right side rows and are read from right to left. On the wrong side rows work all the stitches as they appear, the yarn overs are purled (except for the 3 garter stitches of the beginning and the end of the row, which are always knitted as mentioned above). The charts show the yo after the 3 garter stitches of the beginning of the row, before and after the central stitch and before the 3 garter stitches of the end of the row. After each chart there are also written instructions. There is a stitch glossary after the written instructions of the last chart. A) Start with garter tab as follows: Using Crochet Cast On, CO 3 sts. Knit 13 rows, slipping first st of each row. At end of the last row, turn work 90 degrees and pick up and knit 5 sts along one long edge of work (1 st in each slipped st along edge, skipping first st). Remove waste yarn from CO edge, place the resulting 3 live sts on left needle and knit these sts. You have now 11 sts. Or (if you don t like garter tab) Cast on 11 stitches and Purl 1 row (wrong side). B) Continue with Chart A as follows:

3 garter sts, Chart A, central st, Chart A twisting the cables in the opposite direction (as shown on Chart B2), 3 garter sts. Knit rows 1-32 of Chart A once. Continue repeating rows 33-52 of Chart A as long as you wish. You can go to Charts B1-B2 after having completed row 52 of Chart A. C) Continue with Charts B1 and B2 as follows: 3 garter sts, Chart B1 which includes the central st (marked in light pink), Chart B2, 3 garter sts. The reason why the central st is marked light pink on the chart B1 is that on Charts B1 and B2 the central st becomes part of the pattern. Bind off after having completed row 21 of Charts B1-B2 (on the wrong side) using 2 strands of yarn held together as follows: k2, *sl both sts back to left needle and knit 2tog, k1* till you have 1 st. Break yarn and draw through last st. Note that the bind off row appears on Charts B1-B2 as row 23. In fact it is performed on row 22 as mentioned above. Hand wash, block your shawl, dance happily around it!!
