Before further use of a tool that is damaged, carefully check to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment, breakage, mounting, and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced. 4. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools clean for best and safest performance. Follow all instructions. 5. USE SAFETY GLASSES WHEN US- ING THE ShopStrop Precision Sharpening Kit. SYSTEM OVERVIEW A well-honed tool can be a pure joy to use and a whole lot safer than a dull one. Now you can sharpen chisels, plane irons, marking knives, lathe turning tools, anything that needs a sharp edge... quickly, easily, and inexpensively. No need to buy a bench grinder (or find a place to store it)... and now you can gain unequalled precision with the aid of a ShopStrop Precision Sharpening System and it s new Tool Holder! Simply add ShopStrop Wheel to your drill press! The ShopStrop Wheel and its attachments easily touches up already-sharpened tools as well as those needing complete restoration or shaping. Because the edge is held at eye level, sharpening can be easily observed and controlled. That eliminates the need to guess about the sharpening angle. Both hands are free to guide the edge while the wheel does the work. ShopStrop provides four times the surface area of a vertical grinding wheel, more area to accommodate larger blades. The Basic system consists of a 4 leathercovered wheel with a hex shank, one aluminum disk, and three different grits of adhesive-backed sanding cloth, plus the formulated compound. RTD10000350AA
- USING THE BASIC SYSTEM - HONING A BLADE WITHOUT THE PLATFORM 1. Select the appropriate sanding disk and remove the backing from it. Stick the disk to the aluminum disk. TIP - Use the hex spindle as a guide for perfect sanding cloth placement on the aluminum disk. 2. Chuck the ShopStrop Wheel with the aluminum disk and sanding cloth into the drill press. 3. Adjust the drill press to rotate at its slowest speed. A speed of 800 RPM or slower will be more than adequate to put a keen edge on your blade. This speed also allows more control over the sharpening process and reduces the chance of overheating. 4. Work the back side of any instrument having only one sharpening surface, chisel, plain blade, etc., to a true and flat state. Hold the instrument flat on the sanding wheel using 320 grit cloth than moving to 600 grit cloth. 5. Remove the sanding cloth disk and finish the back side by stropping with the honing compound and leather wheel. This is the key to achieving superior results. 6. Now sharpen the bevel side with the drill press running, place the heel of the blade on the rotating wheel and rock it forward until the tool is running flat and even. This perfect angle is easily determined - you ll feel it. 7. After each series of sharpening cycles using progressively finer grits, inspect the tool to check the results. Continue these cycles until you have created a wire burr on the back side of the tool. You will feel it with your fingers. This is the maximum sharpening possible using the sanding disks. 8. Strip the rotating wheel down to the leather strop by removing the aluminum disk and sanding disk. Chuck it into the drill press, again operating at the slowest speed. With the drill press running, apply a small amount of honing compound by lightly touching the stick to the leather. Continue the process by honing or stropping the blade using the same procedure as when using the sanding disk. If the tool had been sanded to the 600 grit level your mirror sharp edge will be achieved in 30 to 60 seconds. Always work on the left side of the hex spindle. DO NOT UNDER ANY! WARNING CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT TO SHARPEN AGAINST THE ROTATION OF THE ROTATING LEATHER WHEEL. SETTING UP THE ROTATING WHEEL AND PLATFORM 1. Follow steps 1 through 3 of the basic system setup. 2. Place the platform loosely on the drill press table with two 3 to 4 C clamps. NOTE: If your drill press is of the smaller variety, simply remove some material on the back edge of the platform. By cutting out this U configuration, the platform now will nest around the drill press column. U Shaped Cutout 3. Lower the rotating wheel into the receiver hole on the platform insuring that the wheel is centered in the hole. Insure the drill press table is level and the wheel is even with the surface of the platform. 4. Secure the platform with the C clamps. 5. Turn the drill press on to insure the rotating wheel has proper clearance. Adjust the platform if necessary. The illustration above shows the sharpening action on the side closest to you. This assumes a clockwise rotation of the rotating wheel. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIR- CUMSTANCES ATTEMPT TO SHARPEN AGAINST THE ROTATION OF THE ROTAT- ING LEATHER WHEEL.
SETTING UP A BLADE IN THE HOLDER ASSEMBLY 1. Assemble the pivot block to the tool holder using the 1/4-20 socket head screw and wave washer. This is called the holder assembly. 2. Place two of the 1/4-20 flat head screws in the holes of the tool holder to the outside of the scribe line. 3. Align the blade to be sharpened with the scribe line and place the third 1/4-20 flat head screw in the hole closest to the blade. Flat Head Screws (3) Scribe Line Socket Head Screw socket headed screw. Extend the length of the blade to the platform at that selected angle. Lift this assembly off without changing the length of the blade and retighten the outer screw. 5. Turn on the drill press and using its lowering handle, lower the rotating wheel slightly below the platform surface. Rotate the holder assembly with the blade onto the surface of the sanding cloth and gently release the lever so the rotating wheel comes in contact with blade. 6. After each series of sharpening cycles using progressively finer grits, inspect the tool to check the results. Continue these cycles until you have created a wire burr on the back side of the tool. You will feel it with your fingers. This is the maximum sharpening possible using the sanding disks. 7. When the tool had been sanded to the 600 grit level your mirror sharp edge will be achieve in 30 to 60 seconds. 4. Tighten all three screws using the scribe lines to insure a straight alignment of the blade in the tool holder. Method 1: Sharpening at the existing angle. Loosen (adjust) the outside flat head screw on he tool holder, mount this assembly to the pivot pin on the platform, extend the length of the blade to the platform at that peculiar angle, now secure it to the tool block by tightening the socket headed screw. Lift this assembly off, without changing the length of the blade and retighten the outer screw. Method 2: Dialing in an angle between 15º and 35º. Loosen (adjust) the outside flat headed screw on tool holder, mount this assembly to the pivot pin on the platform, select the desired angle on the degree scale, secure it to the tool block by tightening the TOP VIEW BOTTOM VIEW
NOTE: Since the tool holder has a complete grip on the blade you are sharpening and your hand is far removed from the sharpening point you may go against the grain of rotation by sharpening on the right side of the hex shaft. This applies only to the sanding disk process.! WARNING NEVER ATTEMPT TO STROP OR HONE THE BLADE AGAINST THE ROTATION OF THE LEATHER SUR- FACE. GOING AGAINST THE SPINNING ACTION ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE HEX SHAFT COULD RESULT IN BODILY INJURY. RESTORING THE LEATHER STROP AND SANDING DISKS In time, metal particles will build up in the leather. However, the leather strop can be quickly restored by lightly touching it with a fine wire brush to remove the particles. To remove particle buildup and restore the sanding cloth, use a belt sanding eraser. PLANE BLADE INSTALLATION IN TOOL HOLDER OTHER CONSIDERATIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS Depending on the condition of the edge to be sharpened select the grit of sanding cloth that would work best. Course 150 grit is for complete restoration and reshaping. Medium 320 grit is for generally dull, some minor nicks. Fine 600 grit is for the maintenance level, touch up and preparation prior to the final leather buffing. If the sharpened blade edge becomes skewed it is easily restored to true straight edge. If the raised side of the blade is on the left, merely tilt the left side drill press table down. If the raised side is on the right, tilt the right side of the table down. Only tilt the table a very small amount. This could be up to one or two degrees depending on your drill press runout. THESE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE EXAGGERATED FOR CLARITY.
