PROSPECTUS The League of Milwaukee Artists Presents: The 2018 West Bend Plein Air Competition and Paint the Market August 16 August 18, 2018 West Bend, Wisconsin DESCRIPTION The League of Milwaukee Artists is hosting the first West Bend Plein Air and Paint the Market competition in beautiful West Bend, Wisconsin. Check in, stamping, and show/reception to be held at The Gallery of Wisconsin Art, West Bend. For over 70 years, the League of Milwaukee Artists (LMA) has championed artistic creativity and actively contributed to the arts in Southeast Wisconsin. The League represents close to 120 local artists creating two-and-three-dimensional artworks in all types of media, a group dedicated to the promotion of visual creation, personal artistic growth, and the expansion of the Arts in our state, region and community. ELIGIBILITY Participation is open to any artist over the age of 18. REGISTRATION and PAYMENT Artists may only register online at the LMA website www.milwaukeeartists.org on or before Wednesday, August 15, 2018. Registration fee: $35 online before August 15, $45 in person. MATERIALS Each artist may submit three (3) pieces: 1 small & 2 large; or 2 small & 1 large; or 3 small. Media may include: oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastel, gouache, ink and pencil. For dark colored materials, please paint a white patch to provide a legible stamping area. SMALL pieces: Maximum material size 12 inches x 12 inches of canvas, paper or board unframed. LARGE pieces: Maximum material size 320 sq. inches of canvas, paper or board unframed. Formula: (sq. inches = length x width). Examples: 16 x 20 = 320 sq. inches; 14 x 22 = 308 sq. inches, 12 x 24 = 288 sq. inches. FRAME width: Maximum 4 ¼ inches. MAT width: Maximum 4 inches (watercolors, etc.). 1

MAIN EVENT GUIDELINES A minimum of 95% of each artwork must be created on-site, within the event boundaries, in the true spirit of plein air. Minor adjustments or corrections may only be done in a studio to fix forms or colors. A piece will be disqualified for judging if: the artist is found using an ipad or photos on their easel. the artist is standing outside the boundaries (to be provided at check-in). or artist intentionally impedes the sightline of another artist. CHECK-IN Check-in and stamping will be held at The Gallery of Wisconsin Art, located at 303 Water St., West Bend, WI 53095 (414-333-1942). Check-in and stamping will be open from 8:30am-2:00pm on Thursday and Friday. (See separate Prospectus for check-in information for Paint the Market.) Artwork materials MUST be stamped prior to starting work to ensure that the submitted work has been created during the event. ARTWORK SUBMISSION Thursday and Friday by 5:00pm, Saturday from 9:00am-12noon, at GOWA. Pieces will be displayed in the lower level gallery space at GOWA. Check-in stamp must be visible on the back of each piece of art. Artwork must be signed, appropriately framed, mounted and securely wired for hanging. We reserve the right to refuse any improperly framed pieces, wrapped canvases, stained mats, alligator hangers, or those with wet paint on the edges. PRICING The pieces will be sold at the prices selected by the artist. Price changes will not be allowed after artwork submission. Any manual price changes found on title cards will result in the removal of the corresponding painting from the exhibit. COMMISSION The Gallery of Wisconsin Art will retain a 40% commission on all artwork sales. Artist payments will be mailed during the first week of September to the address provided at registration. CONTEST JUDGING Judging will take place at 1:30pm on Saturday, August 18. Judges are Mary Ulm Mayhew, and Ric Hartman (owner of GOWA). Awards will be presented at 5:00pm on Saturday, August 18 (Reception 4:00-7:00pm). PRIZES Best of Show: $1,000 First Place: $750 Second Place: $500 Third Place: $250 Honorable Mention: $100 (An artist may win only one of the above awards.) Peoples Choice: $100 2

ART PICKUP Artists may remove their pieces after judging, or can leave them for sale at the Gallery of Wisconsin Art, to be picked up no later than Saturday, September 1, 2018. All artwork must be picked up by the artist or a designated agent. LIABILITY Regardless of cause, the artist agrees to bear all risk and expense for any loss, theft or damage to their artwork or other personal property or injury to their person. The artist agrees to be responsible for insuring their artwork if so desired. 3

PROSPECTUS Paint the Market at the West Bend Farmers Market Saturday, August 18 th 2018 Presented in conjunction with the West Bend Plein Air Competition by the League of Milwaukee Artists REGISTRATION Artists registered for the West Bend Main Event are automatically registered, if they choose to participate, but must still stamp in during the check in time and location (see below). Artists who do not register for the main event may participate by paying a separate registration fee of $20, payable online at the LMA website www.milwaukeeartists.org or by check during the checkin and stamping period. CHECK-IN AND STAMPING: at the GOWA Information Table, located at the West Bend Farmers Market, at 215 N Main St from 7:00-8:30am Saturday, August 18. PAINTING GUIDELINES Artwork must be created on-site, within the boundaries of the West Bend Farmer s Market. See other guidelines in Main Event Prospectus. PAINTING and FRAMING PERIOD Painting must take place between 7:30am and 11:00am (market closing time) on Saturday, August 18. Painting materials MUST be stamped prior to starting to paint, see above. MATERIALS Each artist may submit one (1) signed painting. See the Main Event Prospectus for material and size guidelines. PAINTING SUBMISSION Only one painting may be submitted.
