2 home grown timbers why choose brooks bros? Brooks Bros Home Grown Timbers Division was created in 2015 when Brooks Bros (UK) Ltd acquired Sewstern Timber Services. The site at Sewstern (near Grantham) is an integral part of Brooks Bros timber and timber products services with it s log mill offering home grown (and European) timbers from extensive stocks plus a number of added value services. UK home grown timbers are an excellent, cost-effective and sustainable alternative to imported timbers and form a very important part in the total Brooks Bros timber inventory. As these timbers have become increasingly more the choice of specifiers and users, the Sewstern site s longstanding specialist experience can confidently expect to fulfil specific client requirements. The Sewstern site sawmill machines and manufactures a wide range of home grown timber items: for landscaping, building and construction, joinery and furniture making. The starting point is the logs we source: Ash, Douglas Fir, Elm, Larch, Lime, Oak and Sycamore logged mainly in the UK, although we do supplement our Oak logs from France. Other available species and specials include Pippy Oak, Cedar of Lebanon and British Grown Western Red Cedar. We source both FSC and certified logs where available. With any non-certified logs we will always provide details of origin. All are sustainably produced. We use the whole log, sawdust included, as all our wood waste is utilised in biomass: mainly to power our kilns for drying timbers. We also sell woodchip into the biomass industry. On site we offer timber products cut to size, kiln dried and bespoke machined (all to order). FSC CO13816 Look for FSC certified products

home grown timbers sourcing and availability 3 sourcing Log buying requires very specialist understanding and practiced skills in all things timber, including knowing which species grow best in the different areas of the UK. Take Oak logs for example for long beam production, UK grown logs can be limited so Brooks Bros also source French logs but, the majority of Oak beams are supplied to specific section size and quality. As standard European production is not always suitable, timber is mainly cut to order in the Sewstern mill. Also, hardwoods should be felled during the winter months when the sap is down. This is particularly important with white wood, like Sycamore, to avoid discolouration and reduce tension in the log: too much tension can cause splitting and casting when sawn. Ash, Sweet Chestnut, Cherry and juvenile Oak are also susceptible. grading/standards Sewstern staff can visually stress grade beams for structural use and quality grade timber produced in house. Brooks Bros offers CE marked timber (to BS EN14915:2013) that is fit for purpose. certification Brooks Bros is an industry leader in sustainability, delivering an ambitious environmental strategy with a strong focus on growing its certified portfolio and reporting publically on its progress. It offers home grown timber with or certification, depending on origin. availability Home grown timbers have become increasingly more in demand with users and specifiers. Through longstanding experience coupled with expert understanding Brooks Bros in Sewstern can confidently expect to fulfil specific client requirements. The Sewstern site s impressive inventory is available as: > Boules: Air and kiln dried Prime, Joinery, Character and Rustic grades Commonly 20 to 150mm thick other sizes produced to order > Beams: Fresh sawn and well air dried (three to four years) Brooks Bros aim to offer certified solutions in all stock timbers.

home grown timbers added value services 5 band milling Sewstern operates one of the few band mill saws in the UK which still cuts predominantly European Oak, Douglas Fir and Larch logs into bespoke beam sizes to meet customers specific size and quality requirements. The site also cut and kiln dry Brooks Bros own logs into through and through boards. Other operations include: > Sawn-to-size beams (to cutting list) > Special cuts - taper sawing, sweeps and jowl posts > Beam planing machining finger jointing From tooling to finishing Brooks Bros offers the complete timber service. As a part of this service the Sewstern sawmill operates a top quality bank of saws and moulders (including Raimann ProfiRip laser-guided multi-rips, Opticut S50 cross cutters and Weinig Powermats) producing both standard and bespoke one-off profiles, including: > Sawn-to-size kiln dried material for joinery > Planing, moulding, chamfers, pointing, four-way weathers and feather edge boards Brooks Bros also offer a range of finishing services (priming, lacquering, staining and painting across its UK sites) - please ask for details. The Grecon Profijoint finger jointing line produces extremely accurate and neat finger joints enabling Brooks Bros to offer cladding, decking and other profiles in exact lengths (to reduce waste) and in extremely long lengths (to avoid unsightly butt joints in situ). Finger jointing can also provide cost savings by using cheaper shorts jointed to create long premium lengths. kiln drying This part of the Sewstern operation is based on a large, modern biomass kiln drying facility operating 11 kilns with a monthly drying capacity of plus 600m 3. As well as drying its own stock Brooks Bros also offers this service to the trade.

home grown timbers grades 7 prime QBA/QSA/QFA) joinery (QB1/QS1/QF1) character (QB2/QF2) rustic (QB3/4 QF3/4) For high class joinery, cabinet work and kitchen units: where clean and knot-free boards are required. General: Boules in which two thirds of the boards are clean, straight, contain little sapwood, with practically straight grain and a regular heart. This is our top grade. Colouring: Regular. Knots: Sound, intergrown with one knot of 20mm maximum diameter every 2m. Heart Shakes: Accepted with a reduction of volume. Not Acceptable: Curly grain, enclosed sapwood, red heart, brown rot, black streaks, stain, rot through bark pocket and spiral grain. Tolerated: Isolated occurrence of one of these characteristics (star shake, ring shake or surface bark pocket) per board. For general joinery with some knots but clear sections so frames for window and stair stringers can easily be cut. General: Sold as boules or separate un-edged boards. Grain: May be slightly angled relative to the log s axis. Knots: Sound, intergrown with one knot of 40mm maximum diameter every 2m permitted. Bigger knots tolerated on condition they are isolated on 25% of the board and lead to volume reduction. Heart Shakes: Accepted with a reduction of volume. Not Acceptable: Curly grain, enclosed sapwood, rot through bark pocket and spiral grain. Tolerated: Isolated occurrence of one of these characteristics (star shake, ring shake, red heart, black streaks, stain, rot or bar holes) per board. For rustic joinery, traditional furniture and flooring where the natural characteristics of the wood are particularly appreciated. General: Sold as boules or separate un-edged boards. Grain: Sloping or twisted is permitted. Curly grain is tolerated. Knots: Sound and cat s paws with one knot of 80mm maximum diameter every 2m permitted. Knots above 80mm are accepted. Bigger knots are accepted on 25% of the boards maximum on condition they are isolated. They do however lead to volume reductions. Occurrence of unsound knots accepted on 10% of the boards. Not Acceptable: Through and enclosed sapwood. Tolerated: Surface bark pocket, sound sapwood, red heart, brown rot and black streaks. Isolated occurrence of one of these characteristics (heart shake, ring shake, star shake, unsound sapwood, stain, rot or bore holes) is also tolerated per board, though they do lead to volume reductions. For flooring and rustic furniture. General: Sold as boules or separate un-edged boards. Grain: Slope of grain not limited. Knots: Permitted without limitation unless contractually excluded. Tolerated: Some defects and deteriorations are permitted without limitation unless contractually excluded. Front Face Front Face Front Face Front Face
