President/Executive Director Report Annual General Meeting September 13, 2017 The past year for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dufferin has been a good one in many ways. Financially, we ended the year with a small surplus. However, it has also included challenges as well as successes. One challenge we faced was learning that our United Way funding would be reduced. Last year s United Way campaign in Dufferin County did not go well. As a result, all agencies in Dufferin County had their funding cut. We re hoping as the campaign begins for this upcoming year that things will improve. United Way has become a major funder of our agency. It is something we will watch closely. Some of the past year s fundraising successes include: Our annual Bowl for Kids Sake, the mainstay of our budget being up 10% from the previous year. Through the year we learned our collaborative grant application to the Provincial Government was approved. Being part of a project focused on promoting volunteerism is perfect fit for our organization. It also helped us financially. This past year we received funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education to help fund our In-School Mentoring and Go Girls! programs. The number of children we served this past year increased slightly from the previous year. It was good to see the number of matches in our core Big Brothers Big Sisters program remain steady compared to last year. We continue to serve a large number of children in our In-School Mentoring Program and Go Girls! programs. We served over 200 children in these programs. As always we continue to offer our traditional mentoring programs but at the same time we have found it very rewarding to be able to customize our programs to meet the changing needs of our community. One of the highlights this year was being able to match an Arabic speaking co-op student with three Syrian refugee children who had recently arrived in Shelburne. By sharing a common language and creating a friendship the co-op student s weekly visits went a long way to helping the children settle into their new school environment. We saw an increase in the number of children who attend our monthly Big Bunch events. We were also able to include newly arrived Syrian refugee families to many of our Big Bunch events. With your help as Board Members, volunteers and staff in just this past year we have been able to make positive changes in the lives of 284 children. When a child has a mentor, the odds they will be emotionally, socially and physically healthy increases dramatically. When we have happy, healthy young people in our communities, everyone benefits. Respectfully submitted, Steve Murphy President Nancy Stallmach Executive Director
