In Memory of Private ALFRED HOLDEN 93658, 17th Bn., Royal Welsh Fusiliers who died age 23 on 29 October 1918 Son of Alfred and Mary Ann Holden, of "Brooklands", Liverpool Rd., Hutton, Preston, Lancs. Remembered with honour ENGLEFONTAINE BRITISH CEMETERY Commemorated in perpetuity by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

Name: HOLDEN, ALFRED Initials: A Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Royal Welsh Fusiliers Unit Text: 17th Bn. Age: 23 Date of Death: 29/10/1918 Service No: 93658 Additional information: Son of Alfred and Mary Ann Holden, of "Brooklands", Liverpool Rd., Hutton, Preston, Lancs. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: C. 1. Cemetery: ENGLEFONTAINE BRITISH CEMETERY

Cemetery: ENGLEFONTAINE BRITISH CEMETERY Country: France Locality: unspecified Location Information: Englefontaine is a town where the straight main road from Le Cateau (11 kilometres) to Bavay (16 kilometres) crosses the road from Le Quesnoy to Landrecies, on the western edge of the Foret de Mormal. Englefontaine British Cemetery is north of the town, a short distance west of the road to Bavay (D932). Historical Information: Englefontaine was captured by the 18th and 33rd Divisions on the 26th October, 1918. It was later "adopted" by the Borough of Cheltenham. Englefontaine British Cemetery was made by the Burial Officer of the 38th (Welsh) Division in November, 1918, and enlarged after the Armistice by the concentration of graves from Les Tuileries British Cemetery. There are now over 150, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, nearly 10 are unidentified. The cemetery covers an area of 586 square metres and is enclosed by a low rubble wall. LES TUILERIES BRITISH CEMETERY, ENGLEFONTAINE, was behind the garden of a house, on the North side of the road to Salesches, at a hamlet called Les Tuileries. It was made by the 33rd and 38th Divisions in November, 1918, and contained the graves of 55 soldiers from the United Kingdom. No. of Identified Casualties: 170

Private 93658 Alfred HOLDEN Private Alfred HOLDEN Jnr. was born in 1895, the second of five children, the others being Ethel 1894, Dinah Mary 1897, Harry 1908 and Ruth 1909, to Alfred HOLDEN Snr. and Mary Ann (BUTTERWORTH), who themselves had been married at St. Mark s Church, Witton, Blackburn on 21 April, 1894. All the children were born in Blackburn. The 1911 Census shows the family in Brooklands Terrace, Blackburn, and they must have moved shortly afterwards to Hutton near Preston, eventually taking up the running of a mixed goods shop in Skip Lane near the corner with Liverpool Road, residing at a house called Brooklands. Alfred Snr. had at one time been an overlooker at a mill and young Alfred became a cotton cloth weaver in Blackburn following the completion of his education. It is believed that it was from Blackburn that Alfred was to join the military to go to war, signing up with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers 17 th Battalion. After training, the Regiment moved over to France and Alfred was subsequently killed just two weeks short of the end of the War. From the 8 th August, 1918, what became known as the 100 days offensive began with repeated attacks on all the Axis fronts and it was during these that Alfred was to lose his life. Alfred is buried at grave C. 1 at the Englefontaine village s British Cemetery some 25 kms east of Cambrai and is indicated at the end of the row. In the week following Alfred s death, the Bulgarian, Turkish and Austro-Hungarian armies all sued for peace and Germany was in political turmoil. A change of political power quickly followed and Germany negotiated the now famous armistice in the railway carriage at Compiegne before strife threatened a revolution at home. Alfred s father and mother are buried at St. Andrew s churchyard, Longton, and there is a memorial inscription to young Alfred on their headstone. They had moved for a time to live in Tolsey Drive, Hutton, but at the time of their deaths in 1951 and 1959 they were resident at the corner shop in Skip Lane. Alfred was unmarried and had no children. A comprehensive family tree has been built up identifying the modern day descendants of the Holden family. Alfred is remembered on the war memorial at St. Andrew s church, Longton.
