TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION 2 ALL ABOUT LEARNING AND EARNING 4 YOUR TWO OPTIONS 6 THE PLANS 9 PLAN 1 10 PLAN 2 11 NETWORKING 12 THE WRAP UP 16

Welcome! Well, welcome and congratulations: 2 You've taken a big step that most people only dream of taking. You're taking control of your career and going after what you really want. And since you've been brave and ambitious enough to take that big step, it's up to me to support you and do everything I can to help make sure you're wildly successful. (I like to imagine meet-ups of Academy members where each of us has a bottle of Dom Perignon in front of us, throwing our heads back and laughing with joyful abandon. But that's just me.) Part of how I'd like to help you become wildly successful is to help make the learning process as pain-free and stress-free as possible. Yes, there are definitely going to be times when you feel overwhelmed by how much there is to learn (go easy on yourself we all feel that way sometimes) and, yes, there will be some times when you worry if you'll ever feel like you're mastering copywriting (ditto), but there's one stressor I want to help you completely eliminate: I don't want you to ever worry about "not being able to afford to learn this." In fact, I want you to be delighted by extra money coming in. That's what this booklet is all about: I want to show you the exact steps you can follow to help make sure you can earn money as a copywriter while you're learning copywriting. I want your Academy membership to pay for itself and I also want you to make a nice chunk of change on top of that.

3 I won't ask you to risk your current job and I won't suggest you move into copywriting full-time until you're ready if you're ever ready to do that. Copywriting part-time is still a great way to add some income. But what I will ask you to do is move out of your comfort zone. You took a big, brave step by joining the Academy and you have a few more brave-ish steps you'll have to take to start earning. You'll have to get in touch with strangers, you'll have to present yourself confidently as a professional, and you'll have to actually sit down and write. But don't worry I'll help you with all of that, too. So, if you're ready to continue on this path, and if you're ready to start reaping some rewards right away, let's get cracking!

All About Learning and Earning 4 I'm sure I don't have to sell you on the benefits of earning money but I'm going to, anyway. The Learning and Earning system is important for a couple of different reasons. First, and most obviously, it puts those dollars/ pounds/euros/insert-your-currency-of-choice in your pocket. Second, though, it also helps you to build experience. That seems obvious, too, but think about it: Most courses or trainings have you learning all of the concepts and then send you out into the world to get experience. We encourage you to get that experience while you're still learning, so that when you've gone through all of the trainings, you're ready to hit the ground running with the knowledge you ve acquired and a few projects that you've already completed. That'll just help you get more clients, faster. Third, and just as important as either of the other two, it gives you confidence. Learning something new is hard especially as an adult. When we were young, we were constantly learning new things. Now that we've matured, it's actually pretty rare that we encounter something entirely new to learn. And that only serves to make learning new things more uncomfortable and, often, a bit of a blow to the ego. You're not supposed to master copywriting right away. It takes time to learn, and everyone who writes copy including the very best copywriters have had to take time and put in effort to learn it. But, if you're like the vast majority of us, it's still going to throw you a bit that you can't immediately do it all perfectly.

Learning and Earning gives you the chance to test out your abilities with projects that will both help your clients and help prove to yourself that you might just have what it takes. With a project or two under your belt right away, you're building some momentum (important) and establishing some belief in your abilities (crucial). 5 So why don't more people do this? Well, there are a couple of reasons. Without a guide as to how to do it and where to start, most people get too afraid to dig in and try to find clients right away. Second, and just as common, people that do try to land clients right away either do it too early in their copywriting training and/or they start with the wrong types of clients. Those people aren't able to pick up any clients and then get really disappointed, really fast. You, however, are different. You, my friend, are bound to succeed. Why? Because this, here, is your step-by-step program. You can follow it at your own pace and you can follow it on your own schedule, but if you do follow it which, yes, does involve putting in some effort and getting out of your comfort zone there's nothing to stop you.

Your Two Options 6 The basic overview of the system, in case I haven't been clear enough yet, is that while you learn concepts, you'll be looking for and landing clients. Boom. And, as I said, I'm about to give you the step-by-step way to do that. That is, I should say ways. Because we're all about flexibility around here, I'm going to offer you two paths to Learning and Earning, and you can decide which one you'd like to follow based on your preferred learning style and timeline. Plan 1 (in a couple of pages) lets you get your bearings and go through the entire Foundations course before you start looking for your clients (and continuing your learning) with our Deep Dive Courses. If immediate cash isn't an imperative and/or you're feeling just a bit hesitant about jumping in, this might be the way to go for you. If, on the other hand, you want to start making some money as soon as possible, Plan 2 is for you. In this plan, we intersperse Foundations Courses with our Deep Dive Courses so that as soon as you learn a few concepts, you put them into action with clients. For both of these plans, I've marked the courses in which you'll be prospecting, pitching and landing clients with asterisks. In the rest of them, you'll be learning and practicing concepts and techniques that will let you offer more and more to current and future clients. Remember, too, that with many of these come action sheets and action steps. If you want to be successful, you have to actually do the action sheets and complete the steps. Just knowing how to find small business clients isn't going to help you earn income if you don't put that knowledge to use.

In both of these, as you've heard me mention before, I have you start your client prospecting with small business clients. The reason for this is that, even if you're just a few modules into your learning, there's a very strong probability that you already know more about copywriting and maybe even marketing than the small business owner does. 7 I don't say this meaning that you're swindling them or anything what I mean is that you'll be able to offer them real value and help them achieve their goals. There are a lot of small businesses out there that need your help and you'll find that there can be a real wealth of clients out there for you to work with. After small business owners, you'll move on to working with solopreneur clients. Solopreneurs are one-person businesses that often operate largely online. They cover a whoooole gamut of business types, from health or life coaching to accountants, consultants, product sellers/creators and everything in between. Solopreneurs are usually experts in their fields...but generally not experts at copywriting. However, many of them have a great deal of appreciation for how important good copywriting is to the success of their businesses. Shortly thereafter, you'll learn how to write product descriptions and find product description clients. After that, you'll go on to our "How to Always Be Working" course to make sure you're really maximizing your opportunities. At the end of both of the Plans comes our "How to Land Ad Agency and In-House Agency Work course, wherein (if you haven't yet!) you'll really get down to focusing on those bigger clients and expanding your business/career even further. I say "if you haven't yet" because you'll often find that taking these steps and learning these skills will put you in the right place at the right time with agencies and in-house agencies even before that step.

One quick note before I get into the plans: It looks like a lot. Don't panic. 8 It is a lot, but this is a whole new career you're learning. And you're going to take this step by step. (Or "bird by bird," as the brilliant Annie Lamott says.) At some point everyone feels overwhelmed and/or wonders if they're up to it. If you didn't feel like this, I'd be concerned. So when you do, just know that you're at that step. Take a deep breath and go easy on yourself. No one is born knowing how to write copy; even the very best copywriters had to learn it just like you are now.

The Plans 9 Okay, here s the big reveal (as they say in home renovation shows): Here are your Learning and Earning plans. Either one will take you down the road to making money; you just have to choose which vehicle you ll use. To follow these plans, all you have to do is go through each course or module in the list, one at a time. Within that course or module, you have to watch the videos, complete any applicable action sheets and, of course, complete the tasks listed in the video. After all, it s going to be very hard to get clients if you don t actually take the steps of getting in contact with them, right? And, again, just so you re prepared as you move through the plans, the courses that involve actively reaching out and finding new clients are marked with an asterisk. Don t skip ahead to those, though the ones that aren t marked are still crucial for learning the copywriting skills that you ll use with these clients. Ready? Let s get started!

Networking (The Icing on the Career Cake) 12 Wait don't skip this chapter! I know you're skimming this page to see if you can skip it altogether. (I'm in your head. And you're thinking of the number six.) And, yeah, I'll call it "networking" because that's a word people understand, but we're not talking about miserable, less-fun-than-aroot-canal, stereotypical networking. This is not about strangers standing around awkwardly and exchanging business cards. First of all, before we get into how to do it right (and how not to hate it), let's talk about why it's important. No matter where you live, no matter the continent and no matter the size of your town or city, I guarantee that the creative community is a small one. Everyone knows everyone. And what that means for you is that as you get to meet and know people in the community, you get a ton of secondary connections. And guess what all of those connections represent? Potential work. When a companys need a copywriter, you want there to be someone there who says, "Oh, hey! I know somebody great" and then passes along your name. Or, you want that person to get in touch with your connection and that connection gives them your name. Either way, you want your name out there in the creative community, and the more people you know, the more this will happen. These connections your friends, colleagues and acquaintances in the community are key to work coming to you, instead of you always going out there and looking for it. And believe me, job and project offers coming to you is the much better scenario. That's the golden ticket right there.

13 So let's talk about how you can meet some of these valuable contacts in the easiest and least uncomfortable ways. The first step I'm going to give you is an easy one, just to help gain some momentum. What is it? Well, if you haven't yet, join the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy Facebook group. This group is only for Academy members, so you know it's full of people like you who are right in the middle of learning and building their careers. Then, once you're in there, post a note on the group wall to introduce yourself. Let people know who you are, what you're hoping to get out of the Academy and any other interesting points about yourself. Believe me, your fellow students are a bunch of really nice people; you have nothing to fear. Okay, that's step one. Easy, right? You can do this. Step two is going to take you a bit further outside of your comfort zone: You're actually going to go out in the real world and meet real people. Do a little research and find the advertising, marketing, and digital media professional organizations in your city. When you find them, sign up for their email lists and then take a look to see what events they're hosting one of the primary purposes of these organizations is to bring professionals together, so I guarantee that there are going to be events. Sign up for a couple; we'll talk about what to do once you're there in a sec. Next up, go to meetup.com and see if there are any "meet-ups" in your city for advertisers, marketers, copywriters, etc. Sign up for the groups and then sign up to attend a few upcoming meetings.

14 Now, when it comes to the event, if you really want to bring someone with you for moral support, go for it but just make sure that you two separate after the first five minutes. The goal is to meet new people, after all. The secret to networking in a relaxed manner is to be relaxed. Don't go into these events trying to get anything from anyone, and don't go in looking for jobs. Instead, just go in looking to talk to people. That's it. These events are already going to be easier for you since everyone is in the same industry and you'll have some automatic talking points. When you walk up to someone, just ask them who they are, what they do, where they do it and if they like it. That it; that's all you'll have to do. Obviously, don't ask those questions all at the same time and be sure to actually listen to the answers. When you're asked about yourself, tell them who you are, that you're a somewhat new copywriter and tell them why you're interested in copywriting and/or why you're enjoying copywriting. If you're talking to someone (of any job) who has been in the business for a while, ask them how they got into it. All of this should be enough to get a conversation going. And that's all we're really looking to have happen here: Swapping of names and stories. Do you need business cards to share right now? They're not absolutely necessary, but they won't hurt you, either. You can go to a site like Moo.com and print up a small batch with just your name, your title ("Copywriter") and your email address.

15 Make sure it's a small batch, though, since you'll want to get new business cards once you have your online portfolio live so you can put that URL on there. These are just so that people can get in touch with you and/or even just remember you. This networking is important to really put some fuel in your copywriting career fire. You can learn and you can find clients and earn some money, but you'll get better results and you get them faster when you combine it with networking.

The Wrap Up 16 Okay, you know the steps to take now you have to take them. And I know; this is the hard part. But remember what I said in the beginning of this guide: It s natural to feel a little bit overwhelmed or stressed out or even scared about these next steps. In fact, not only is it natural, but everyone feels it at some point or points. The keys to getting through it are, first, just to remember that everyone does feel it. Feeling overwhelmed or nervous is not some kind of sign that you can t do this. It s only a sign that you re normal and you re on the right path. The second key to getting through it is to remember why you re doing all of this in the first place. You are on your way to living the dream; to working in a job and career that you genuinely love with fascinating projects and people, and to earning a truly exceptional income doing it. Keep your eyes on the prize and just keep taking the steps to get there, one at a time. You can do this.
