SECTION I GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1 SCOPE OF MANUAL This manual contains the installation, operation, and maintenance procedures for the following equipment W-7 Decoding Transformer (US&S Part No. N212921) 1.2 IN'IRODUCTION The decoding transformer is a transformer designed to operate from a direct current source over the contacts of a code following relay. From the secondary windings alternating current may be taken for the decoding circuits or for other special applications. The W-7 decoding transformer has a primary winding with a center tap, a secondary winding which is connected in series with the primary winding, and two independent secondary windings. Connecting one of the secondary windings in series with the primary windings makes an autotransformer, the output of which is taken from across the entire winding, secondary and primary combined. The output is connected to a Y-10 or Y-20 decoding unit ( or both) with a 7.0 µf capacitor in multiple to minimize the sparking of the primary contacts. One of the independent secondary windings is used to operate an H relay. For operation of the H relay the alternating current output of the transformer winding is mechanically rectified over contacts on the code following relay. The other independent secondary winding is used in interlocking circuits and for other special applications. 5419, p.1-1
SECTION II INSTALLATION 2.1 MOUNTING The W-7 Decoding Transformer has four 1/4" holes drilled in the base plate for mounting. 2.2 CODING RELAY This Decoding Transformer is designed to operate from any code transmitter or code-following relay having silver-platinum contacts. 2.3 CAPACITOR A capacitor (7.0 µf, with mounting, US&S Part Number N212501) must always be applied to terminals 1P-4P when this Decoding Transformer is in service, for protection of the code-following relay contacts. and to minimize radio interference. 2P +1P 3P ~ 4P ~ 4P +1H 2H 2P +1T 2T 3T Figure 2-1. 2.4 WIRING The W-7 Decoding Transformer is equipped with terminals arranged in the pattern shown in Figure 2-1. The wiring diagram is shown in Figure 2-2. +1T +1H +1P 2P 2T 2H 3P 0 3T 3H 4P 4P Figure 2-2. Wiring Diagram 5419, p. 2-2
SECTION III MAINTENANCE AND TEST PROCEDURES 3.1 GENERAL The W-7 Decoding Transformer is relatively maintenance free, since the only possibilities of failure in the unit are an open or short circuit in the windings. If a failure of the Decoding Transformer is suspected, the transformer should be removed from the field and tested in a shop according to the procedure in Section 3.3. 3.2 ASSEMBLY The top plate and transformer assembly may be removed from the case by removing the four screws at the comers of the top plate. 3.3 SHOP TEST When the Decoding Transformer is suspected to be defective, the unit should taken to a shop and the following tests should be performed: 1. Insulation test of 3000 volts AC between the coils and also between each coil and the core. 2. An overall test should be performed as described in Section 3.3.1. 3.3.1 Overall Test 1. Connect the W-7 Decoding Transformer to the test circuit as shown in Figure 3-1. 2. The OC voltage applied to the transformer should be exactly 12.0 volts. This voltage must be taken directly from a rectifier or battery. Slight variations in voltage may be made by use of a multiple loading resistor across the supply voltage. 3. The front contact "On Tnne" of the code following relay should be 50%. This may be obtained by varying the resistor ''R" shown in Figure 3-1. 4. The transformer should meet the values at the voltage, code speed, and "On Tune" specified in Table 3-1 when connected to the circuit shown in Figure 3-1. 5419, p.3-1
