Explanation of functions Effective megapixel resolution The number of pixels that actually make up the image captured by a digital camera. Images recorded with more effective megapixels will therefore contain a larger amount of image information, resulting in higher-level sharpness. See total megapixel resolution. Total megapixel resolution Not all pixels record a part of the image. Some are purposely masked off to receive no light, producing a reference value from which to calibrate light received by the effective pixels. The number of masked-off pixels plus the number of effective pixels equals the total number of pixels. See effective megapixel resolution.
