REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT T1 ROADWAY PROJECT PUBLIC ART BUDGET: APPROXIMATELY $200,000 USD Intrductin The Denver Internatinal Airprt (DEN) Art & Culture Prgram (in cllabratin with Arts & Venues Denver) seeks t cmmissin an artist r team f artists t create an exterir wrk f art fr the nrth wall f the T1 Radway and bus statin fr the new Suth Terminal Redevelpment Prgram. The nrth wall is part f the Public Transit Center currently being cnstructed at DEN, and will be a very active bus statin when it pens in 2015 and the artwrk will be visible t the thusands f emplyees and travelers arriving by bus every day. The DEN Art Cmmittee has recmmended artwrk that will give clr and/r luminsity t a 400-ft lng masnry blck wall n the nrth side f the bus drp-ff area. Materials shuld be durable, easy t clean and maintain and able t withstand dirt and snw/ice-melt chemicals that may be used in the area. This cmmissin is pen t artists/artist teams wrking in all media. The cmmissin amunt is $200,000 USD. Deadline fr submitting prtflis is May 31, 2013, 5:00 PM MST. Abut the Suth Terminal Redevelpment Prgram In 2011, Denver Internatinal Airprt began its first majr airprt redevelpment prject since pening in 1995. The cnstructin f a htel and cnference center, and train statin cnnecting the airprt t dwntwn cmpletes the riginal visin fr the airprt. This five year, $500 millin cnstructin prgram will bth strengthen the airprt's cnnectin t the city s urban cre and turn the airprt itself int a travel destinatin that will serve as a catalyst fr ecnmic grwth in the Denver metr regin. The Suth Terminal Redevelpment Prgram is made up f three independent, yet physically integrated prjects, which include the design and cnstructin f: 519 rm Westin Htel and Cnference Center Public Transit Center Public Plaza The Westin Htel and Cnference Center are slated t pen in 2015 and the Public Transit Center will pen in early 2016. Public Art: Parameters & Gals DIA s Suth Terminal Redevelpment Prgram (STRP) will generate ver $4.25 millin in permanent and temprary public art and design cmmissins ver a three year perid. Currently, the DIA Art Cmmittee is seeking artists wh are interested incrprating their designs and ideas int the area f the T1 Radway n the nrth side f the Public Transit Center. (Please See Attached Images) Lcatin: The apprximately 400-ft lng wall is situated at the nrth end f the new Public Transit Center that will be cmpleted in 2015. The central part f the mural will be visible frm the cmmuter rail statin that will als be cmpleted in 2015 and the full span f the wall will be visible by thusands f emplyees and travelers arriving t the airprt by bus. Materials & Media: The Art Cmmittee is pen t a mural that culd be applied t the 400- ft-lng wall r ther tw- r three-dimensinal artwrk r light/sund-based wrk. Durability & Maintenance: All public art prjects in Clrad are expsed t weather, physical stresses and subject t vandalism. This artwrk in particular shuld be fabricated f highly durable, lw-maintenance materials. Materials must be able t withstand extreme temperature changes, easy t clean and maintain and cntinue t functin/lk gd during winter mnths when the area will be wet and dirty frm radway use. Unique & Site-Specific: The selectin panel seeks a unique, ne-f-a-kind artwrk fr this cmmissin that is apprpriate fr a transit center in ne f the wrld s busiest airprts. Artists must wrk with the peratins and maintenance staff t make sure that the artwrk cmplies with all airprt and FAA guidelines and des nt impede the activities f the airprt r transit center in any way. Open Call: This prject is pen t all artists wrking in the materials & media listed abve. Artists wh currently live and wrk in the State f Clrad are encuraged t apply. Budget The budget fr this cmmissin is apprximately $200,000 USD which will be allcated t the artists/team selected by the selectin panel. This cntract amunt is inclusive f all csts assciated with the prject including, but nt limited t the artist s design fee, ther cnsultatin fees such as structural engineering, insurance, including Clrad Wrkers Cmpensatin and prfessinal liability, small tls, materials, fabricatin, transprtatin and installatin, including any building r site mdificatin required, travel t and frm the site, per diem expenses, prject dcumentatin, cntingency t cver unexpected expenses and any ther csts f any kind. Artists wrking in any media are eligible t apply. Artists are nt required t have previus experience in public art. Emerging artists are encuraged t apply fr this cmmissin. Maintenance and Durability All applicants are expected t cnsider the issues f lng-term cnservatin and maintenance f public art, alng with time and budget. Public art prjects are in the public realm and may therefre be expsed t weather, physical stresses and subject t vandalism. Public art prjects shuld be fabricated f highly durable, lw-maintenance materials. Semi-finalists are encuraged t cnsult with a prfessinal cnservatr prir t the submissin f a final prpsal. Artist prpsals awarded cntracts will be reviewed by the Denver Internatinal Airprt Management and Operatins divisins fr adherence t all airprt, City, and federal standards f maintenance and durability including ADA standards. The STRP Artist Registry is nw accepting prtflis f past wrk (r relevant cnceptual wrk) via Sliderm.cm fr Phase II cmmissins, which includes permanent and integrated artwrk, design prjects and temprary installatins fr the new Suth Terminal Redevelpment Prgram. All prtflis entered int the registry during Phase II will be autmatically entered int a brad pl f artists t be cnsidered fr all future phases f STRP cmmissins. (The duratin f the registry is expected t be 4-5 years). Registry Plicies: As with all City and Cunty f Denver percent-fr-art prjects, parameters and criteria fr invitatin and/r selectin are develped by an Art Selectin Cmmittee made up f cmmunity members and arts prfessinals. The STRP Art Cmmittee was created specifically fr the Suth Terminal Redevelpment Prgram and is verseen by the Denver Cmmissin n Cultural Affairs. Artists and designers can be asked t submit their qualificatins r prtflis f past wrk via invitatin r by pen call. Prtflis/applicatins will be reviewed by the Selectin Panel fr adherence t specific criteria, suitability fr the prject, and verall artistic excellence. All qualified individuals will be kept in a registry f artists wh may be cnsidered fr future prjects ver the next five years. The registry will have a term f n lnger than five years. At the end f that term, the artists in the registry will be cntacted by staff t update their infrmatin and prtfli r the artist registry will be clsed. Artists can be remved frm the registry at any time fr any reasn. Designed t keep the registry at a manageable number, different registries can be created fr different purpses (design registry, sculpture registry, etc.). Artists may submit prtflis fr placement n the registry, but there is n guarantee f prequalificatin r cmmissin. The art/design registries can be clsed at any time fr any reasn; artists will be ntified in this instance. There may be an entry fee assciated with pen calls. This fee is used nly t ffset the csts f the registry system.
