Candle Mats Candle mats or sometimes known as Penny Rugs are a popular item for home decor. Traditionally, candle mats are handmade with wool for a folk art or primitive look. Lunch Box Quilts has created candle mats that can be easily stitched with an embroidery machine for a more contemporary look. The appliqué designs and stipple quilting are stitched in the hoop. With a little assembly and binding, you will have a beautiful candle mat for yourself or a gift. The Lunch Box Quilt samples were made using a good quality 100% cotton fabric. Don t take a chance on fabrics that may not stand the test of time. It s also a good idea to pre-wash and press all fabrics before use. Isacord 40wt polyester was used for the appliqué designs. For the stipple quilting Isacord 40wt polyester variegated thread was used giving the stippling a cheerful look. Start by stitching out the eight sections needed for each candle mat. Refer to the Instructions starting on page 2 for hooping and appliqué instructions. Pages 6 through 8 have the Stitch Sequence Chart for each design. Pages 9 through 12 will guide you through the construction of the candle mat. All seam allowances are ¼ inch. Most of all have fun, and enjoy making candle mats with your embroidery machine!
Instructions for Embroidery of Section Wedges Materials Needed for each Candle Mat Background Fabric: This is the fabric that the appliqué design and stippling will stitch onto. You will need to cut eight pieces of fabric 6 x 7. One for each section wedge. Appliqué Fabric: Fabric scraps or pieces of appliqué fabric slightly larger than appliqué design shape. Stabilizer Batting Combo: Each wedge of the candle mat will be stipple quilted in the hoop. To achieve the quilted look, you will need to use a stabilizer/batting combination product. Two such products are Battilizer by Hoopsisters and OESD Fuse and Fleece. You will need to fuse two pieces of the Fuse and Fleece together to achieve the desired loft. Cotton batting used in quilts is not a recommended substitute. Embroidery Hoop Stabilizer/ Batting Placement Stitch Embroidery Hoop Background Fabric Cutting Stitch 1.
