On 20 March 1634/5, Zachariah, his wife Agnes, his only child, John, and an indentured servant sailed on the ship Assurance de Lo to the new world from Weymouth, England. The expedition was headed by Rev. Joseph Hull of Somersetshire and Devonshire. They landed after a fair voyage of 46 days in Massachusetts Bay at Weymouth, Mass. (then known as Wessaguscus, it s Indian name.) The Hull group established a town and it was renamed Weymouth in honor of their embarkation place. Twenty acres of land were sold to the Bicknell family on what is now Middle Street in East Weymouth. Zachariah died within two years of his arrival and his wife remarried and sold the land, moving to Braintree with her new husband.79 He married Agnes or Agnis Lovell. 65 Agnes or Agnis Lovell. Eighth Generation 128 Zacharie Bicknell. Died 1620/162179 in Barrington, Somerset Co., England. Buried in Barrington Parish Churchyard79. The name Bicknell derives from a place name in Somersetshire, Beacon Hill, which is near the city of Taunton. The place was referenced in the Domesday Book as Bichehalda and Bichenhalle - both corruptions of the original Saxon name for the manor there, Bykenhulle; bykene or beacon, and Hulle or hill. The manor of Bykenhulle consisted of 1,500 acres of land surrounding the hill, and was first held by Aluric, a Saxon, prior to the conquest. Following the coming of William, the Conqueror, the estate was given to William de l Estra, whose daughter, Johanne, married Robert de Pavilly of Normandy in 1260 A.D., bringing the estate to Robert as part of her dowery. (As a side note, Johanne s father was not living at the time, and it was the law that permission to marry should be obtained from the King, Henry III. This was not done, and Robert was put in prison for a period, eventually securing his release upon payment of 20 marks, or about sixty-five dollars.) The Pavilly s ancestry goes back to Lord Amalbert de Pavilly of France who founded a monastery in Pavilly, Rouen in 664 A.D. Robert and Johanne s son, John, changed his name from de Pavilly to reflect his current holding as was the custom of the time just prior to his death in 1281. As such, he became John de Bykenhulle. By the fourth generation following John the French de had been dropped from the name, and the name underwent a number of spelling changes down through the centuries (Bikenoll, Bykenyll, Bycknell, etc.) before finalizing on Bicknell. Although the exact ancestry of Zacharie Bicknell is not known, without a doubt he descends from Robert de Pavilly and Johanne de l Estra. Included in this line are Knights and high members of the church. It is also evident that several generations of Zacharie s immediate ancestors lived and died in Barrington, Somerset, which is near to the Bicknell manor.79 He married Johan. 129 Johan. Died 1621/162479 in Barrington, Somerset Co., England. Buried in Barrington Parish Churchyard79. 136 Humphrey Turner. He came with his wife and his eldest son, John, to Plymouth in 1628. Our John was his second son by that name.79 He married Lydia Gamen. 137 Lydia Gamen. Page 10
