WISTA AUSTRALIA BOARD OVERVIEW WISTA (Women's International Shipping & Trading Association) was formed in 1974 and is made up of women working within the shipping industry. WISTA originated in the UK and has now developed to become an international organisation with members from a variety of shipping backgrounds. WISTA s members include naval architects, freight forwarders, maritime lawyers, ship's engineers, insurance and sale and purchase brokers, claims adjusters and many more. WISTA Australia, Incwas born in 2011. As a non-profit organisation for women within the shipping and trade sectors, the purpose behind WISTA Australia is to promote networking and educational opportunities for female participants in the maritime industry, increasing and strengthening both Australian and international trade. WISTA Australia holds a number of regular industry related events where women in the shipping industry provide an insight into their careers and share their experiences with one another. Wista Australia is dedicated to offering opportunities for its members to meet, learn and share their own involvement within the maritime industry. With Australia being one of the greatest maritime trading nations of the world, WISTA Australia aims to encourage more women into shipping roles, assisting in the growth of Australia s maritime industry.
WISTA AUSTRALIA BOARD PROFILES PRESIDENT Lisa is a consultant at Chainalytics, a global supply chain and logistics consultancy. Lisa has over 10 years industry experience in many aspects of the supply chain including; 3PL, freight forwarding, international shipping, maritime risk, manufacturing, warehousing and road transport. Her previous employers include MSC Australia, BevChain, Ericsson AB and Volvo Powertrain. LISA STYRUD Her undergraduate studies in Sweden included Industrial Management and Engineering prior to moving to Sydney where she completed an MSc (Hons), International Business and MSc, Logistics Management at the University of Sydney. She is passionate about equality and diversity and has been a member of WISTA Australia since its establishment in 2011. Her previous roles on the committee include Webmaster/Membership officer and Treasurer. As the President of WISTA Australia she hopes to work to grow the network and to promote the organisation throughout Industry. In addition Lisa wants to work towards providing value for members through opportunities to network, learn and further their careers in a supportive and inclusive environment.
VICE - PRESIDENT Jenny Ruffell Smith has worked in a variety of roles in the shipping and logistics industry throughout the world over the past decade. The majority of her time has been spent in Australia where she has worked in agency, piloting and freight forwarding as well as completing a MBA in Shipping and Logistics. Jenny joined WISTA Australia in 2010 and has been part of the committee since 2011 where she now holds the role of Vice President. Currently living in Brisbane, she thrives on a busy life and is constantly organizing future events for the state of QLD as well as assisting with the development of new chapters. JENNY RUFFELL SMITH
RETURNING OFFICER Danella has over 20years experience operating as a lawyer specialising in international trade and shipping. She is a partner within Holding Redlich and has received local and international recognition. WISTA AUSTRALIA BOARD PROFILES SECRETARY Naraya is a dispute resolution lawyer in the Shipping & Transport Group in international law firm, Holman Fenwick Willan's Sydney office. She has a Masters in maritime and international trade law and has experience in casualty crisis management, ship arrest and judicial sales of vessels, cargo claims, marine insurance advisory work, charterparty litigation and negotiation as well as advising on a range of cross-border transactions including sale of goods contracts on trade terms (FOB, CIF, CFR etc.). As part of her undergraduate studies, Naraya also studied international relations at the Political Science Institute in Paris (Sciences Po) and speaks fluent French. NARAYA LAMART Naraya joined WISTA in 2014 as Secretary of the National Executive Committee and is passionate about promoting and encouraging women to engage in all aspects of the maritime industry and international trade.
TREASURER Sashika is a Senior Business Analyst at APL Lines Australia. APL is a unit of Singaporebased Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) and APL agents are presence in over 250 countries. Sashika obtained her bachelor s degree in Sri Lanka in 2006. She started her accounting career in 2004 and has worked as a Management Accountant since 2007. Sashika migrated to Australia in 2011 as a skilled migrant where she is continuing her accounting career. With her vast experience and extensive knowledge, Sashika adds great value to the treasurer position. APL Australia encourages all its women employees to attend WISTA events. ASSISTANT TREASURER Lisa is the National Bid Consultant at Rohlig Australia, responsible for the tender management process and developing sales pipelines. She hasover 20 years experience in international freight forwarding and logistics in Europe and Australia. Rohlig is an owner-run family company founded in Bremen in 1852. We provide complex services in the fields of international air and sea freight, project logistics and supply chain management. LISAGODDARD
COMMUNICATIONS Alison is a maritime lawyer admitted to practice in Australia in 2012 and currently works in-house for the Australianshipping company ANL Container Line Pty Ltd (part of the CMA CGM Group). As part of her role she deals with a wide spectrum of the containerised shipping industry, including chartering vessels, assisting with vessel incidents and has interactions with other maritime services providers such as stevedores and ports. As a new member of the WISTA Australia committee she hopes to promote and grow the WISTA brand within Australia along with her other committee members. ALISON CUSACK
MARKETING Anouk is legally qualified in France, having obtained her LLB and LLM from Toulouse University. She immigrated to Australia in 2002 where she completed further legal studies (LLB at UNSW and College of Law 2004/2008). She started her carrier in the transport industry working in customer service for an international freight forwarder, before moving to Maersk Line Sydney in 2006 where she worked for 2 years as a claims handler. Anouk joined Thomas Miller and the TT Club in November 2007. She is responsible for handling claims on behalf of a wide range of members including freight forwarders, trucking companies, stevedores and port authorities within Australian, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan and PNG. MARKETING After completing her 2 year training contract, Faith was admitted in the UK in 2005. In 2008 Faith moved to Australia, joining Wotton + Kearney in 2011. Faith s practice both throughout her training and post-qualification has focused on marine law, both contentious and non-contentious. She also has considerable experience in acting for clients in insurance and general commercial litigation matters, particularly property damage and construction related insurance claims. MARKETING Ivonne is a General Manager at Rohlig Logistics in Melbourne running the Freight Forwarding Business in Victoria. Ivonne has over 15 years of industry experience. Her main areas of expertise are in Sales and Marketing in the global freight forwarding industry, Leading and Managing people and Change Management. She is passionate about gender equality in business and the need for increasing the presence of women in leadership. She has dedicated her research for her Doctoral Thesis to the cause with the topic Power motivation and gender role perception - A cross cultural analysis on gender differences in leadership role occupancy. As part of the Marketing Committee she wants to increase the footprint of WISTA in the Industry and provide more opportunities for women in the Industry. IVONNE RANISCH
C COMMITTEE MEMBER Philippa is a Senior Associate at Lavan Legal and practices in the areas of commercial advice and litigation,specialising in contractual disputes, mining, trade practices and competition, intellectual property, defamation and directors and partnership disputes. She regularly appears in the Supreme Court of Western Australia, the SupremeCourt of Appeal and the District Court of Western Australia. Philippa also has experience in litigation matters in the High Court, the Federal Court and the Magistrates Court of Western Australia. COMMITTEE MEMBER Bertha is a Marketing and Communications Specialist at Port of Melbourne Corporation, Australia s largest container and general cargo port. A Public Relations graduate from RMIT University, Bertha started her career as a graphic designer, before transferring her creative expertise into advisory roles in Marketing & Communications for some of Australia s largest corporations. A highly skilled communicator, she is passionate about leadership communications, staff engagement and change management. As a committee member for WISTA Australia she hopes to contribute to the organisations success by assisting in enhancing member experience with personal development opportunities. BERTHA POLIANLIS
COMMITTEE MEMBER Michelle is a shipping and transport lawyer based in Brisbane. She has a Master of Laws Degree in Maritime Law from the University of Queensland. Michelle is recognised internationally and has been ranked in Chambers 2013, 2014 and 2015 as a Leading Lawyer in the Asia Pacific - Shipping category. Michelle has comprehensive knowledge of marine casualties, including salvage claims, ship collisions, marine pollution and limitation of liability proceedings. Michelle s casualty experience includes being part of the incident response team for Rena, where she attended the incident room in Tauranga, New Zealand representing owners and Club interests. Michelle also acted for ExxonMobil in the APL Sydney casualty in Port Philip Bay. Michelle has been involved in WISTA Australia as a committee member for a number of years and currently represents WISTA on the Port of Brisbane Welfare Committee (BPWC). The BPWC is part of the International Port Welfare Partnership Pilot Project being sponsored by International Seafarers Welfare Assistance Network (ISWAN). MICHELLE TAYLOR In addition to WISTA, Michelle is a member of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand and the Aviation Law Association of Australia and New Zealand.
