Tips for navigating the mythological areas of the MinecraftEdu world In creative gamemode the pupils can fly around the mythological areas. If they drop through the air towards the bottom of the world and die, they will respawn to the original spawn area (near the small Viking village) which looks like this: Prompt pupils to move out of the center of the spawn beam. If they need further help, teleport an individual pupil to your own location. Do this using the Teacher menu. See the Teachers Tools resource. 4
Explore the mythological areas activity In the Minecraft world, Norse mythology is represented. In these steps pupils explore the mythological areas of: Yggdrasil; Asgard; the Bifröst rainbow bridge; and the home of a frost giant. Pupils then create a Viking saga story based on the mythological areas. Step 1: Travel to Yggdrasil Ask the pupils to log into the multiplayer world. Teleport the pupils to Yggdrasil In MinecraftEdu teachers should teleport to Yggdrasil: /tp 1758 170 917. See the Teacher tools document for more information about teleporting. Viking storyteller activity Step 1: Plan an animation Working in small groups ask your pupils to plan an animation based on a Viking theme or mythology with a specific audience in mind. Using the MinecraftEdu Viking world ask pupils to plan which snapshots they intend to animate. For inspiration look at this STEM in Minecraft animation: Odin creates the Viking world Working in groups ask pupils to make a storyboard to plan their animation. They should include the script of any speech they want to use in their animation. Pupils should also consider the sounds that they might use in the animation. Ask pupils to review their storyboard and script, considering the intended audience, and make any changes they think are necessary. Step 2: Compose, record and edit Ask pupils to compose and record the snapshots and audio that will make their animation. Pupils may include additional copyright free sounds which they have sourced from the C2K copyright free sounds app. Using a suitable software package, for example, Windows Movie Maker or imovie ask pupils to import their images and sounds and produce a short animation. During the editing process ask pupils to decide which of their images and sounds are suitable and discard any unsuitable material. Ask pupils to: Select suitable transitions and effects to enhance their animation. Experiment with sequences. Layer the transitions, sounds, effects, titles and credits. Use appropriate timing when editing their animation. 9
Pupils should review their film during the process and make on-going improvements. Ask pupils to save their work, ensuring it is saved in a format that will enable it to be viewed on other computers. Step 3: Show and discuss In groups ask pupils to show their animation and discuss. Extending this activity If you have access to screen recording software pupils can record video whilst in MinecraftEdu. This is known as Minecraft machinima. They will need to discuss roles, characters and timings and rehearse the performance prior to making the screen recording. 10
