As one of the first Chartered s based in Aberdeen, Craig has advised numerous local, national and international clients on IP protection for nearly twenty years. He gained a Masters Degree from Aberdeen University in New Materials after graduating from the University of Glasgow with an honours degree in Chemistry. Matt has a wealth of experience representing major multi-national corporations in multi-party Opposition and Appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, including a period of three years based in Munich. Mark Lunt Email: mlunt@ Mark is an experienced patent professional having qualified as a patent attorney in 1981, after training in both private and industrial practices. His current practice focuses on mechanical arrangements, especially tools for use in the oil industry. His scientific training (BSc degree in Oceanography and Zoology, University of Wales, Swansea), is unusual in the profession, but it gave him wide exposure to biological, chemical and physical sciences that have since proved useful background for many of the inventions he has handled. Vanessa Stainthorpe Email: vstainthorpe@ Vanessa s expertise covers patent matters in the physics and mechanical engineering fields, with a particular focus on medical technology. She has prosecuted and advised on numerous patents with medical subject matter, such as drug delivery devices, spinal and other orthopaedic instruments, dental, knee and hip implants, fracture fixators, ventilators, EEG systems, ophthalmic technology, cardiovascular stents and catheters. Other areas of expertise include advanced manufacturing, food technology and energy technology including gas, water and electricity infrastructure.

Dr Jennifer Uno Email: juno@ Jennifer graduated with an honours degree in mining and mineral engineering from the University of Leeds in 1997. Staying in Leeds, she went on to complete a postgraduate study of electrochemical gas sensors to obtain her doctorate. After university, Jennifer joined a large firm of patent and trade mark attorneys in Osaka, Japan. She built up knowledge of patent prosecution in the US, Europe and Japan and went on to lead a team handling the patent prosecution for some major Japanese electronics companies. Daily practice often related to liquid crystal device and semiconductor related inventions. In his final year at university Kieran specialised in the fabrication and characterisation of magnetic nanostructures. Professionally, Kieran handles the drafting and prosecution of patent applications for domestic and non-uk clients. He always strives to understand his clients' commercial objectives so that he is able to proactively provide practical, commercially relevant advice on patent strategy, prosecution and enforcement. His experience extends across a wide range of mechanical and electro-mechanical technologies, but he has specific expertise in plastic injection moulding, automotive and aerospace technologies. Jason holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) from the University of Waterloo, Canada. He has been advising local and international clients on developing and maximising their IP portfolios for several years. Alastair has extensive experience covering a wide variety of technologies including downhole tools, control devices, renewable energy inventions, as well as numerous fluid technologies across a range of fields, such as pumps, conduits, filters and engines; and various other mechanical technologies, such as automotive, medical.

Zoe Goodrum Email: zgoodrum@ Zoe has had a wide range of experience drafting and prosecuting applications in various jurisdictions including the UK, Europe and overseas. She mainly focuses on the fields of physics and mechanical engineering and has particular experience in medical devices, subsea engineering, oil and gas, and mobile devices. Zoe also has experience providing freedom to operate opinions, as well as drafting EPO opinions. Dr Jonathan Moodie Email: jmoodie@ Jonathan is a European and UK qualified patent attorney. He has notable technical expertise in the fields of composite materials as well as medical devices and orthopaedics. He also has experience of aeronautical engineering, automotive engineering and wind energy sectors. Jonathan has experience of patent oppositions before the EPO, drafting patent applications, providing infringement and freedom to operate opinions, performing due diligence and reviewing IP activities to maximise benefit from the patent box initiative. Guy Towlson Email: gtowlson@ Guy practises as a UK Chartered and European, specialising in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications for a wide range of physics, engineering and electronics inventions, with a particular emphasis in the automotive and optoelectronics sectors. He also has particular experience with optical systems, semiconductor devices, control systems, manual and electromechanical devices and wind power systems. Dr David Williams Email: dwilliams@ David joined the patent profession in 2006 after a Master's in Science degree and PhD in chemistry and catalysis from the University of Glasgow. He joined HGF in April 2012 to help develop the then new HGF Aberdeen office. David has particular experience protecting inventions in the energy, mechanical and chemical industries. David works as the client manager and part of a team providing external counsel for well-known international energy companies. He also advises independent inventors and SMEs helping them build a commercially useful patent portfolio.

In her final year she was awarded the Institute of Engineering Technology prize for most outstanding student, and is a past recipient of the Peter MacConnell Memorial Prize for the best 3 rd Year academic performance in her field. Chris Cottingham Email: ccottingham@ Chris graduated in July 2011 with a MEng (Hons) degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Cambridge. During his degree he worked on a diverse range of projects including Light Aircraft Design and Building 3D Computer Models of Femurs. After university, Chris spent eighteen months working in scientific research on topics including radar systems, image processing, and wider sensor systems analysis. John Johnston Email: jjohnston@ John graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2013 with a First Class MEng (Hons) degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He joined HGF in May 2016 as Trainee in the Engineering Group. During his final year he spent time at Rolls-Royce, Derby within the 3D Geometry, Meshing and Optimisation Team where he developed a CFD centred algorithm for the aerodynamic optimisation of HP compressor blades. Laura Mannering Email: lmannering@ Laura joined HGF in spring 2015. In May 2016 she joined the Engineering department and is working as a secondee for Jaguar Land Rover, specialising in invention harvesting and patent strategy. The previous year Laura was working in the Electronics department, specialising mainly in prosecution for HP and HPE. Laura is part way through her 6 month secondment at Jaguar Land Rover working on protecting features in new vehicles that will be released before the end of this year. She also works one day a week in the Leeds Engineering team, working with a range of clients.

Bill McGrail Email: wmcgrail@ Bill is a part-qualified trainee patent attorney, having been awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property. Working under the supervision of qualified attorneys within the Engineering team, Bill provides advice relating to a wide range of engineering fields, including manufacturing processes, consumer products, automotive components, subsea engineering for oil/gas infrastructure and medical devices. Following this, Craig moved to the University of Manchester to undertake a PhD in Nuclear Engineering, specialising in computational solid mechanics. During his undergraduate studies Craig developed an applied knowledge across a broad range of engineering disciplines, including placements in the aerospace manufacturing sector. Robert Walton Email: rwalton@ Robert graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2010 with a first class MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then successfully researched a PhD in nuclear batteries at the same university. Robert s PhD research involved elements of electronics, optics and physics and entailed designing, manufacturing, testing and modelling indirect conversion radioisotopic batteries.
