A few words from Sharon NQPA President Back from time spent in cooler climate and head first into our pottery year and the heat. Despite the heat, our year has started well. Attendance at the studio is up for this time of year and we are well into planning for our Mother s Day Morning Tea & Open Day, to be held at Flowers Street Studio, from 10am-3pm on 7 th May 2017 (flyer in the newsletter). As we are hoping to have visitors come for morning tea and to have a go with clay, we will need as many volunteer members as possible, helping serve morning tea, demonstrating, or to have their own pottery stall. All members are invited to take part. If you can help in any way or would like to have your own stall, please contact Sharon on 0412 831 883, or Wendy on home 4771 5044 or mobile 0434 445 101. After consideration of our current financials, having had major work to the studio roof this year, repeated increases in both electricity and clay price, the committee has felt it necessary to raise the cost of studio hire for ½ day, charges for firing of electric kilns and clay prices to keep in line with the price increases by our suppliers. We have absorbed these rises in the past years but now for our continued financial stability we cannot continue to do so. Price increase will commence from 1 st April 2017 (notice in newsletter). After a two year downturn in the Townsville region which has impacted the Association quite markedly in both revenue and class numbers down, we are now seeing class sizes reaching maximum capacity. There are class times for anyone wishing to teach a class. If interested please submit your plan to a committee meeting by contacting Sharon (President) on Mob. 0412 831 883 or Wendy (Secretary) on home no. 4771 5044 or Mob.0434 445 101. Great to start our potting year with rain and green everywhere. Keep potting! 1

Studio Price Increases Due to the increases in electricity costs over the past few years, and a large increase forecast to be implemented in May, June 2017, the committee has decided to raise both the cost of hiring the studio and the amount charged for the firing of electric kilns. The studio charges were last increased to $5.00 ½ day, $10.00 full day in 2011. The kiln charges were last increased in 2012. Increases have been kept to a minimum, raising the studio cost by $1.00 to $6.00 ½ day, (which is 4 hours), while a full day will remain $10.00. Electric kiln costs will be raised by $10.00 per firing across all kilns and temperatures. Gas kiln firings will remain the same, as gas prices have not risen significantly over the last few years. The cost for clay we are buying has also risen twice since our last price rise in 2015. The association can no longer absorb the increases and will need to pass on through a price rise. All new prices and charges will come into effect from the 1st April 2017. Mother s Day Fair at the studio Sunday 7 th May 10am -3pm 15 Flowers Street, Railway Estate Come and Try! Please send any agenda items to nqpotters@gmail.com prior to meeting. From NQPA member Syd Collins - North Queensland Potters Association Newsletter Editor circa 1989 I found some old letters to my mother and came across this paragraph which might amuse some of our members: I had the job of typing the monthly Newsletter. At that time newsletters were typed on wax stencils, and then run off on an ancient and cranky Gestetner machine. This entailed wax stencils being typed and then placed on a large, inked, set of rollers. The ink was the consistency of tubes of paint, went everywhere, and the blank paper rolled, one by one, under the rollers, much like screen printing. A handle powered the machine, with one turn to one page, and if it went too fast, the pages would smudge. The mount of ink on the rollers was critical - the copies could be smeared if too much, or illegible if too little. 3

So, 150 copies, with 10 pages per copy of news, hints, workshops, finances and glaze recipes, were done, 1,150 pages in all, and these collated into booklets, stapled together, folded into envelope size, typed labels stuck on to each, sticky tape to keep them closed, and then stamps affixed and taken over to the Hermit Park post office, in Charters Towers Road for posting. As can be imagined, typing took ages, and running off and dispatching the copies was often a full day s work every month. Thank goodness for the internet, and Jodi s well presented, colourful newsletter, filled with photos and interesting news. Pug Mill for sale at the Ingham Potters' Association. It is a small single worm drive, works well but is no longer needed. Price $100-00. Ring Fay on 0437 511 736. NQPA Tuesday Social Pottery Group The Tuesday group, with Nic and friends, welcomes all to share. This is an informal group which meets from 10am to 1pm every Tuesday at the NQPA studio. There is only the $5 charge for members to use the premises and we all help each other. No tutors, but everyone helps everyone and it is just a time to come along and enjoy yourself. Please note when you use Flowers St and pay hire fees or buy clay it is necessary to have the correct change as we do not always have much available. This is especially for people who use the studio out of hours PLEASE NOTE THE STUDIO IS CLOSED IN THE EVENT OF CYCLONE OR STORM WARNING WHEN PUBLIC BUILDINGS ARE CLOSED. NO STUDIO ACCESS OR KILN FIRING DURING SUCH EVENTS. Everyone please sign in the DIARY when you are in the NQPA studio! This is essential for both NQPA insurance and your insurance coverage. Please sign your name in the diary to indicate that you are on the premises; it is extremely important for Workplace Health & Safety in the case of a fire to have a record of attendance.
