Syllabus Cnsult with this syllabus befre asking questins regarding the curse rules. There will n exceptins t these rules. Curse: Math 20F: Linear Algebra Instructr Office Hurs: Prfessr Harel (APM 7420): Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:30 am 11:20pm TA's Office hurs Rman Kitsela (APM 6452): Tuesday 1 pm 2:50 pm Sam Verhaegen (APM 2313): Mnday 9 am 11 am MATLAB Office hurs (APM B439): Tuesday 8 am 11:50 am Thursday 8 am 11:50 am Textbk: Linear Algebra and Its Applicatins, 4th editin, by David C. Lay; published by Pearsn (Addisn Wesley) The plan is t cver the fllwing sectins. Chapter 1: Sectins 1-5, 7-9 Chapter 2: Sectins 1-3, 2-8 Chapter 3: Sectins 1-3 Chapter 4: Sectins 1-6 Chapter 5: Sectins 1-5, 7 Chapter 6: Sectins 1-5 There might be adjustments t this plan, as well as t the rdering f sme f these sectins. Lecture: Attending the lecture is a fundamental part f the curse; yu are respnsible fr material presented in the lecture whether r nt it is discussed in the textbk. Yu shuld expect questins n the exams that will test yur understanding f cncepts discussed in the lecture. PROOFS WILL BE CENTRAL IN THE MATERIAL PRESENTED AS WELL AS IN THE TESTS. Hmewrk: Hmewrk will be assigned n TED and will be due at 5:00pm n Friday f each week. Please turn in yur hmewrk assignments in the drpbx in the basement f AP&M. Late hmewrk will nt be accepted, but in case yu have t miss ne hmewrk assignment, yur lwest hmewrk scre will be drpped. It is allwed and even encuraged
t discuss hmewrk prblems with yur classmates, but yur final write up f yur hmewrk slutins must be yur wn wrk. Hmewrk assigned in week n will be turned in in week n+1 (n=1, 2, 3, 4) Yu are strngly encuraged t attend the instructr s and TAs ffice hurs t discuss hmewrk r material cvered in class. Submitting Hmewrk: Hmewrk is t be turned in by means f a drp bx in the BASEMENT f AP&M. Late assignments will nt be accepted. This curse has a grader wh is respnsible fr grading all the hmewrk papers and inputting the grades in TED. T assist the grader, yu shuld keep all prblems in the same rder as the assignment list and rdered vertically n yur page. All pages must be stapled tgether. Hmewrk will be returned in discussin sectin. The grader is under n bligatin t grade messy r disrganized hmewrk. (This includes hmewrk that has nt been stapled tgether.) The upper right crner f each assignment must include: Yur name Yur discussin sectin. If yu attend a different sectin frm the ne in which yu are enrlled, specify which is n yur assignment. Fr example yu may write "I am enrlled in C05 but I attended C01" Hmewrk assignment number The drp bx fr MATLAB is NOT the same as the drp bx fr paper-and-pen hmewrk assignments. They are bth lcated in the basement f AP&M. Questins regarding administrative aspects f hmewrk shuld be directed t the TAs, nt t the instructr. MATLAB: In applicatins f linear algebra, the theretical cncepts that yu will learn in lecture are used tgether with cmputers t slve large scale prblems. Thus, in additin t yur written hmewrk, yu will be required t d hmewrk using the cmputer language MATLAB. The Math 20F MATLAB Assignments page cntains all infrmatin relevant t the MATLAB cmpnent f Math 20F. The first assignment is due in week 2 f the curse. Yu can d the hmewrk n any campus cmputer that has MATLAB. Questins regarding the MATLAB assignments shuld be directed t the TAs. There are als tutrs available beginning Thursday r Friday f the first week f classes in B349 f AP&M. Please turn in yur hmewrk assignments in the drpbx in the basement f AP&M by 3:00pm n the indicated due date (as indicated n the MATLAB Assignment Due Dates page); nte that late MATLAB hmewrk will nt be accepted, but in case yu have t miss
ne MATLAB assignment, yur lwest MATLAB hmewrk scre will be drpped. There will be a MATLAB quiz at the end f the quarter. There is ften cnfusin abut attending MATLAB lab sectins because students are autmatically assigned "lab sectins" scheduled fr the same time as their discussin sectins, but n a different day. These lab sectins have n meaning except during the last week f the quarter; students will take the MATLAB quiz during thse times. Students are free t wrk n the assignments n their wn schedules, prvided they meet the assignment deadlines. MATLAB Quiz: There will be a MATLAB quiz given at the end f the quarter. The quiz will be held during yur scheduled MATLAB time in AP&M B432 r AP&M B349. If yu are unable t make the scheduled time, yu will be able t schedule an alternate time nline. Exams: One midterm exam and a final exam will be given during the quarter. N ntes, bks, cheat-sheets, r any material, including calculatrs and cellphnes will be allwed during these exams. There will be n makeup exams. Yu must bring yur pht ID and a Blue Bk t the exams. Withut them yu will nt be able t take the exam. It is yur respnsibility t ensure that yu d nt have a schedule cnflict invlving the final examinatin; yu shuld nt enrll in this class if yu cannt take the final examinatin at its scheduled time. Midterm: Thursday, August 18, during the class perid. Final: Saturday, September 3 rd, 11 am 2:30 pm in Ledden Auditrium Regrade Plicy: Hmewrk and midterm exam will be returned in the discussin sectins. If yu believe there might be an errr in the grading and wish t have yur hmewrk r exam regraded, yu must bserve the fllwing rules: 1. Return yur hmewrk r exam immediately t yur TA. Regrade requests will nt be cnsidered nce the quiz r exam leaves the rm. If yu disagree with the TA's answer t yur regrade request, yu may ask fr the instructr t review it. In rder t d this, yu must: 1. Return yur hmewrk r exam immediately t yur TA and, 2. Ask that they frward yur hmewrk r exam t the instructr. Instructr review requests will nt be cnsidered nce the exam leaves the rm. 2. Retrieve yur hmewrk r exam during discussin sectin r arrange t pick it up frm yur TA within ne week after it was made available fr pickup (i.e., returned) in sectin. In rder t be cnsidered, regrade requests must be submitted within ne week after being returned in sectin. Grade Recrding Errrs: This curse will have a page n TED; yur hmewrk and midterm grades will be recrded n TED. Please always make sure that yur grades have been inputted and inputted crrectly. Keep all f yur returned exams and assignments. If there is any mistake in the recrding f yur scres, yu will need the riginal exam r assignment in rder fr us t make a change. In particular, if there is any mistake in the recrding f yur hmewrk
scres, yu must ntify yur TA within ne week after the scre was psted t TED (therwise yur request will nt be cnsidered). Late Hmewrk: Late hmewrk will nt be accepted under any circumstances. Grading: Yur curse grade will be determined by yur cumulative average at the end f the term and will be based n the fllwing scale: A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- 97 93 90 87 83 80 77 73 70 The instructr may adjust the abve scale based n their class's perfrmance. Yur cumulative average will be calculated as fllws: 20% Hmewrk, 20% Midterm Exam, 10% MATLAB, 50% Final Exam If yu missed the midterms and yu have ne f the dcuments listed belw, then yur cumulative average will be calculated as fllws: 20% Hmewrk, 10% MATLAB, 70% Final Exam The dcument needed is ne the fllwing: 1. A dctr s nte indicating explicitly that yu physically were unable t attend the exam. 2. A letter frm yur Dean f Students explaining that persnal circumstances, ther than illness, prevented yu frm taking the exam. Withut ne f these dcuments, yur grade n the missed midterm will be zer. Yu must pass the final exam t pass the curse. There will be n makeup exams fr the midterm r final. Academic Integrity: UCSD's cde f academic integrity utlines the expected academic hnesty f all students and faculty, and details the cnsequences fr academic dishnesty. The main issues are cheating and plagiarism, f curse, fr which we have a zer-tlerance plicy. (Penalties fr these ffenses usually include assignment f a failing grade in the curse, and can be much mre significant.) Hwever, academic integrity als includes things like giving credit where credit is due (listing yur cllabratrs n hmewrk assignments, nting bks r papers cntaining infrmatin yu used in slutins, etc.), and treating yur peers respectfully in class. In additin, here are a few f ur expectatins fr etiquette in and ut f class. Entering/exiting class: Please arrive n time and stay fr the entire class/sectin perid. If, despite yur best effrts, yu arrive late, please enter quietly thrugh ne f the rear drs and take a seat near where yu entered. Similarly, in the rare event that yu must leave early (e.g. fr a medical appintment), please sit clse t a rear exit and leave as unbtrusively as pssible. Nise and cmmn curtesy: When class/sectin begins, please stp yur cnversatins. Wait until class/sectin is ver befre putting yur materials away in yur backpack, standing up, r talking t friends. D nt disturb thers by engaging in disruptive behavir. Disruptin interferes with the learning envirnment and impairs the ability f thers t fcus, participate, and engage.
Electrnic devices: Please d nt use devices (such as cell-phnes, laptps, tablets, ipds) fr nn-class-related matters while in class/sectin. N visual r audi recrding is allwed in class/sectin withut prir permissin f the instructr (whether by camera, cell phne, r ther means). E-mail etiquette: Yu are expected t write as yu wuld in any prfessinal crrespndence. E-mail cmmunicatin shuld be curteus and respectful in manner and tne. Please d nt send e-mails that are curt r demanding.
