DESIGNED BY NATURE Created by artists Robert Batey and Dana Cohen Each one-of-a-kind piece is hand crafted from native materials gathered here in the Smoky Mountains along with traditional birch bark and other found materials. Our design process is simple: nothing is predetermined. We start with a pile of branches and twigs and then work out a pattern, an idea. It s very much an intuitive, sculptural approach. Every piece is selected for its distinctive character, and its contribution to the overall design. Sometimes we start with a inspiration from a historic piece, combining our own style with native materials to create a unique design. CUSTOM ENTRY DOOR Diamond design with birch bark shingles, twig mosaic of various hardwoods. Size 36x80 Price Sold. Prices start at 2500 SUNRISE FROM LOOK ROCK Original Photograph in rustic frame. INSPIRED BY HISTORY Our "elegant rustic" designs are inspired by the Great Camps of the Adirondack Mountains, first popularized during the late 1800s. The original Great Camps were homes for the wealthy, and fulfilled their desire to be at one with nature. Eventually, the owners brought along all the amenities from civilization, and incorporated them into the rustic setting. As the style developed, some makers would incorporate original oil paintings into their pieces. Being a photographer, it seemed only natural to combine my original nature photographs with some of our designs for a unique blending of rustic and fine art. RUSTIC HEMLOCK FRAMES Created from reclaimed eastern hemlock Each frame is unique Hemlock trees across the entire eastern United States have been devastated by the Wooly Adelgid, an insect that destroys the tree by sucking the sap from its needles. Most of the hemlock trees in the Smoky Mountains have been affected, leaving thousands of trees standing dead or dying. Some landowners have decided to harvest the trees and use the wood rather than have it go to waste. The design process begins at the scrap pile. By choosing to reclaim cutoffs from the milling process, we are able to utilize wood that would normally be left to burn or mulch. We study the natural patterns of knots, beautiful grain, and sculpted edges of each piece to bring out the rustic beauty not found in commercial lumber. Available with or without artwork. Available at our etsy store. MORNING SUN, CLINGMANS DOME Original Photograph in hand-crafted rustic frame of salvaged hemlock.
