Install Time Installing ONE antenna, versus multiple (4-5-6 antennas), drastically reduce the install time. Reducing risk of drilling in to important electronics and/or cabling (airbags). - Savings - $???
Today s Installation Challenges Two universal antenna installation objectives 1. Good RF performance Maintaining good quality voice, data and positioning connectivity 2. Lowest possible lifetime cost Encompassing not only product cost but also other key factors.
A closer look at lifetime costs Procurement and install costs Antenna unit cost only one factor of many Ease of installation time is money, bad installs = costs Today s Installation Challenges Maintenance costs Poor RF performance can = comms failure at critical time Poor antenna durability = vehicles out of commission End of life costs Impact of antenna system on vehicle resale value
Today s Installation Challenges 2 Key challenges for antenna planning 1. Interoperability VHF, UHF, 7/800MHz first responder services must be able to communicate effectively at all times. 2. Increase in on-board technologies 2G,3G,4G mobile data, cell phone, Wifi, GPS offer today s public safety services unparalleled connectivity
Inside today s police cruiser Today s Installation Challenges Multiple devices in many cases each requires multiple antennas Laptop with mobile 2G/3G/LTE Single, dual or triband voice radio LTE / 4G router 2.4/4.9GHz integrated services router This expanded antenna requirement raises RF and mechanical challenges
Today s Installation Challenges RF challenges 1. De-tuning and pattern effects - caused by proximity of antennas to one another and to other objects. 2. Isolation is required between antennas to prevent destructive interference 3. Special requirements of MIMO & diversity systems require high isolation / low correlation co-efficient to realise data rate benefits
Mechanical / physical challenges 1. Lack of real estate - Vehicle shapes are changing, more antennas competing for less available roof space. 2. Increased install costs Installing multiple separate antennas / routing separate cables takes time and costs money 3. Decreased resale value multiple holes in vehicle decreases potential resale value Today s Installation Challenges 4. Failures in service more installed antennas = more parts to fail in service through poor durability, corrosion or vandalism
What Are The Solutions? Solutions to the challenges of interoperability 1. Multiple Antennas - Separate antennas for VHF, UHF & 7/800MHz Pros: antennas are individually low cost No performance compromises (initially) Greater flexibility on gain antenna forms Cons: Multiple holes / antennas Diminished resale value Increased installation costs Increased maintenance costs
What Are The Solutions? Solutions to the challenges of Interoperability 2. Multi-frequency antennas - dual or tri-band whips covering VHF, UHF, 7/800MHz Pros: Only need one antenna Quick single hole installation Less maintenance Better resale value Suits new dual and tri-band radios Cons: Less flexibility on gain Possible limited performance compromises Cons: Multiple holes / depending on antenna selected Panorama Antennas ASF-155-S4-821 VHF: 136-174MHz UHF:406-472MHz 7/800: 746-872MHz
What Are The Solutions Solutions to the challenges of on-board technologies 1. Multiple antennas - Add additional WIFI, GPS, cellular 4.9GHz and LTE antennas Pros: Each individual antenna will be cheap Cons: Multiple holes / antennas, Diminished resale value Increased installation &maintenance costs Performance variations
What Are The Solutions? Solutions to the challenges of on-board technologies 2. Multi-function antennas - combining multiple technologies into a single housing Pros: Cost effective installation, Consistent RF performance Discrete appearance Lower lifetime cost & higher resale value Cons: Potentially higher up-front cost Less flexibility to use gain antenna forms Panorama Antennas GPSB2 GPS: 1575MHz 26dB Cell: 850/1900/2100MHz WIFI/WiMAX: 2.4/4.9-6GHz Whip: Optional VHF / UHF
What Are The Solutions? Solutions to the challenges of on-board technologies 2. Multi-function antennas - combining multiple technologies into a single housing 150 Watt Triplexer Single, dual or Tri-Band Radio Up to three single band radios Tri-band whip VHF, UHF, 7/800 850/1900/2100 Cellular Toughbook, Aircard or cellular router Panorama Antennas GPSB2 Base & ASF-155-S4-821 Whip 2.4/4.9-6GHz WIFI / WIMAX Vehicle WIFI / WiMAX Router Or modem GPS 1575MHz GPS engine / computer aided dispatch system
What Are The Solutions? Solutions to the challenges of 4G / LTE Installations Many new 4G routers use MIMO & Diversity technology to improve data rates. MiMo systems take advantage of multipath environments, where propagation is complex, multi-polarised and signals do not arrive directly from the horizon. Throughput is the key performance indicator for MiMo networks. Of all the factors at play, correlation between antennas in multiple antenna systems has the greatest effect on throughput. Low correlation between co-located omnidirectional antennas, tuned to the same operating frequencies, can only be achieved by spatial separation, polarisation differences or a combination of both. Multiple antenna systems means more antennas and the requirement to de-correlate those antennas adds an extra dimension of complexity. Most Public Safety 4G / LTE routers have at least 4-5 antenna ports - 2x LTE / Cellular, WIFI and GPS
What Are The Solutions? Solutions to the challenges of 4G / LTE Installations Multi-function MiMo antennas 2x LTE elements isolated and de-correlated from each other. Consistent de-correlation and isolation built in. Removes need to worry about antenna positioning for MiMo performance. Ancillary technologies such as Cellular / EVDO or WIFI and GPS also supported Single hole installation Rugged, public safety grade design
