Born & ReBorn of Fire Mount Etna, Sicily, one of the most active volcanoes in the world
Introduction Lava stone (basalt) quarried at the base of the Mount Etna, has a fine grain texture - with no filling required - and is warm grey in colour. We call this Etna Grey Lavastone. In a small factory near the volcano, a process of 'refiring' - where the surface of the lava stone is turned temporarily back to molten rock - creates a new and unique finish. This process does not apply any colour pigment or glaze, but through heat alone, the stone surface takes on a deep black tone that is impossible to find naturally. We call this Etna ReFired Lavastone. Now, take fine glass powder (recycled from TV and computer screens) and apply it to the surface of the stone by way of a patented screen printing process, and a whole new eruption of patterning and texturing options are created. Glass Fusion Patterning 'fuses' the glass with the stone in a kiln to provide a permanent design of any shape and colour you like. The printing screen can be setup to be fully customised, allowing designers complete freedom to incorporate permanent bespoke motifs into any architectural project. Etna Grey, Etna ReFired and Glass Fusion Patterning are suitable for all uses: internal and external, walls, floors and kitchen worktops. Full sized slab dimensions are 3200x800x20mm, allowing architects and designers freedom to design on large scales. Slabs do not undergo any application of enamel, colour or chemical treatment at any time during the process. Glass used for the patterning is 100% recycled. { ReFiring and Glass Fusion Patterning processes are protected by Patent. 2
