DUE DATE: (1st DAY OF SCHOOL Be ready to share!!) Summer Reading Required Books List: Title: Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix Lexile: 800L Synopsis: Luke has never been to school. He s never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend s house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend. Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police. He s lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family s farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside. Then, one day Luke sees a girl s face in the window of a house where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he s met a shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out of the shadows. Does Luke dare to become involved in her dangerous plan? Can he afford not to?

Title: Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer Lexile: 600L Synopsis: This rip-roaring, 21st-century romp of the highest order is a combination of folklore, fantasy and a fistful of high-tech. These two crime caper fantasies feature anti-hero Artemis Fowl, a twelve-year-old boy-genius and the last of a clan of international underworld figures and con artists. Rough 'n' tumble storytelling with plenty of attitude. From a strikingly original new voice comes the story of Artemis Fowl, a very unusual hero. Artemis is a genius, a criminal mastermind, and a millionaire...and he is only twelve years old! A combination of Sherlock Holmes, James Bond and Attila the Hun, even Artemis doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy because these fairies are armed and dangerous, and don't play by any rules!

Title: Divergent By Veronica Roth Lexile: HL700L Synopsis: In Beatrice Prior s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is; she can t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. Stunning her meek and selfless family, Beatrice elects to join the brave and reckless Dauntless faction, if she can pass the grueling and violent initiation designed to pit her against her deepest fears and classmates willing to let cruelty take the place of courage. With an infuriating but handsome trainer preparing her for the trials, Beatrice must also decide whether to unleash the secret she is keeping, a secret that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society and possibly destroy Beatrice as well. Beatrice's struggles with loyalty and individuality make her an appealing and easily relatable character in a story packed with suspense and excitement.

Title: GONE by Michael Grant Lexile: 620L Synopsis: In the blink of an eye, everyone disappears. Everyone gone, except for the young. There are teens, but not one single adult. Just as suddenly, there are no phones, no internet and no television; no way to get help and no way to figure out what's happened. Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating The teens themselves are changing, developing new talents - unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers that grow stronger by the day. It's a terrifying new world. Sides are being chosen; fights are shaping up - townies against rich kids; bullies against the weak; powerful against powerless. Time is running out- on your birthday, you disappear just like everyone else...
