Valves Disklavier, ianist and electronics Hugo Morales Murguia
Valves For disklavier, ianist and electronics The iece tries to exlore the mechanical characteristics o the instrument through the musical use o some o its artiacts and ossibilities o control. An indeendent machine intervened by human hysical gesture and digital control. The iece is comosed or a Yamaha-Disklavier DC3-Pro acquired by the Conlon Foundation, Amsterdam. Other models o Disklavier maybe equally comatible, ossibilities and resonsiveness should be veriied in advance. Requirements: - A ackage o Bluetack or similar, used to dam some o the strings. - A small stereo amliier, small enough to it discretely inside the disklavier. - Two small transducers 25mm/6Watts or small enough to it in one hand. - Three FSR ressure sensors. And an aroriate interace (e.g. Arduino) - One Ebow - One contact and two condenser microhones - A comuter with an aroriate rogramming language (original rogram written in Max/MSP rovided uon request) General Prearations: - Elongated ieces o Bluetack should be laced along the strings, close to the tuning ins, on the ollowing registers: Highest (rom B to E) Lowest (A, Bb and B) and on the to art o F6 string - The amliier should be on, and both transducers connected to it. The transducers should be laced in such a way they do not resonate or buzz with any art o the iano (e.g. covering the holes on the soundboard). (Fig. 1) - The FSR sensors should be asted on the center o the allboard (keyboard lid) with a comortable distance between them to be activated. - The Ebow (on) should be laced on the E string (one octave above middle E) - The contact microhone is to be attached to the control device underneath the instrument. (Fig. 1) - Two condenser microhones to be directed on both extremes o the hammer s mechanism. The disklavier is to be set in Silent Mode. A cluster o three bass notes is ressed oening a -ink noise gate-. The keyboard erorms a - random walk- starting on the highest register and rogressively sreading out to the whole keyboard, this key choreograhy is occasionally interruted leaving some keys ressed (activating the Ebow i this haens to be E) as the contact microhone icks u the sound o the rocessing device holding down the keys.
