Made to Measure Sewing Machine Cover 6mm (¼ ) seam allowance Measure length, width and height of your sewing machine. Remember the fly wheel and any other protruding piece. To determine the cut width of fabric: Add length and width together then add 1 for seams To determine the cut length of fabric: Add height and HALF width together then add 1 for seams. Working on the example shown - the fabric required measured 16 x 25 - when seams added the result was 17 x 26. Cut two pieces of fabric this size. Cut one square from left and right top corner of each piece of fabric, the size of squares is half the width measurement of your machine. (4 in this example) Hard sums over! So no more delay - let s appliqué! 1. Cut one 8½ square. Press in half. Open out 2. Draw 7 circle on W/S of fabric: Align mid line on Circle Cut template with crease in fabric. Draw on half, flip template over, re-align with crease, draw other half of circle. 3. Follow Stage 2 and draw heart in the centre of circle - use Eazy Heart template. 4. Pin this piece to the W/S of one machine cover section. 5. Using a small stitch length sew round drawn circle and heart. 1

6. Turn to R/S - very carefully cut top fabric outside heart and inside circle - this reveals the backing material. 7. Satin stitch over the cut edges. Remember to use the correct foot - it has a cut-away section underneath, it may be your acrylic foot. If you have an open-toed foot, you can see more clearly where you are going! Lay piece of paper or stitch n tear underneath to stop the fabric buckling when satin stitching. Paper will tear away easily after stitching. 8. Place on wadding. Pin layers. 9. Quilt round centre shape. On completion of quilting, sew round outside edge - keep stitching close to raw edge. Trim excess wadding to fabric edge. 10. Repeat above stages with other half of machine cover. I used the Eazy Heart shape and drew one heart inside another. 11. Use one of these quilted pieces as a template for the lining. Cut two pieces of lining. Make up Cover 1. Pin quilted layers together. If your sewing machine has a handle - mark length of handle on top edge of cover. 2 2. Sew sides and top of cover - do not sew across the handle gap. If your machine does not require hole for handle, sew across the entire top.

Match seams, sew straight across. Keep seams open and flat to reduce bulk. 4. Repeat Stages 1-3 with lining BUT sew across corner using larger seam allowance - 1.25cm (½ ). EVEN if you are not leaving a gap for the handle - leave a gap in lining in same place to turn cover through. 5. Put quilted cover inside lining R/S together. Match seams. Pin raw edges. Sew round. 6. Turn cover R/S out through gap for handle (or through gap in lining). 7. Press outer edge and top stitch. 8. Sew lining and top fabric neatly round handle hole or sew gap in lining closed (if no handle). 9. Place on machine and admire! 3. Open out corner section, bring both sides together. Pin layers. Why not make a cover for your Simplicity Caddy in the same fashion? This one is not quilted nor lined. Cut two 25½ squares. Cut 4¼ squares off top corners. Sew pieces together using ½ S/A. Leave 6 gap in top of caddy cover for small handle. Overlock/zigzag raw edges where possible for added strength and to prevent fraying. Put cover on caddy before marking position of extending handle. Check this carefully before cutting fabric. Hem tidily round the cut section. 3

Appliquéed Tea Cosy Cut pattern pieces as per Simplicity 2753 Appliance Covers instructions. Broderie Perse Flowers: 2. Cut flower carefully - do not have too many sharp points )bit of pruning useful) BUT do not end up with a blob! PEEL backing paper off flower. 3. Repeat with more flowers. 1. Decide on flower shape. Press sufficient fusible glue web to W/S of fabric covering selected flower. 4. Press glue web to back of leaf fabric (small scrap from my stash used here). Draw required amount of leaves using Wide Leaf template. Cut out and PEEL off paper. 5. Arrange design on R/S of cosy front. Press in place. Cover appliqué shapes with a Teflon pressing cloth, baking parchment to prevent accidents! You really don t want a sticky bottom on the iron! 6. Buttonhole or blind hem stitch all raw edges. Start with leaves then sew flowers. 7. Place cosy cover on wadding. Pin layers. Quilt round design in some form. 8. Sew round outside edge to secure all layers. 4

Butterflies: 1. Press fusible glue web to W/S selected butterfly fabric. Draw six largest size Oval Hearts. Draw three mid size Narrow Leaf shapes. Cut out and peel off paper. 2. From another fabric cut six smaller Oval Hearts. These are stuck on to the larger ones to make the wings more decorative. 3. Fuse butterflies to cosy back. Buttonhole or blind hem stitch round shapes. Embroider antennae. 4. Place on wadding and quilt round shapes. NOW if I had any sense I would have quilted the cosy front and back first then applied the shapes, see Quilting Classroom show for more details!! Remember you can watch on line anywhere in the world - www.createandcraft.tv - go to Sewing, open In the Classroom and watch the Quilting Classroom (old Classrooms are stored in the Video Gallery). Complete Cosy. Here I ignored the pattern instructions - you can follow those or cheat with this method. 1. Add tab to one half of cosy cover - make sure that it is in the middle at the top. 2. Sew both halves together using designated ½ S/A (as in Simplicity pattern). 3. Sew lining sections together - LEAVE a gap in top of seam. 4. Insert cosy cover into lining, R/S together. Sew round base. 5. Turn R/S out through gap in lining. Press well. Top stitch round base. 6. Stick cosy on teapot and make a cuppa! Jennie Rayment 2015 5
