Scope With deeper understanding of how human senses work, we would be able to bring disruptive innovations into the areas of virtual reality, augmented reality, and human augmentation. IEEE Digital Senses Initiative is dedicated to advancing technologies that capture and reproduce, or synthesize the stimuli of various senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, etc.), combine the reproduced or synthesized stimuli with the naturally received stimuli in various ways, and help humans or enable machines to perceive, understand and respond to the stimuli. Plans are under way to capture all the different perspectives via in depth crossdisciplinary discussions, and to drive to a set of results which will facilitate disruptive innovations and foster cross-industry collaborations globally in three focus areas (virtual reality, augmented reality, human augmentation) and many other relevant areas (wearables, consumer healthcare, smart robots, etc.).
Focus areas Virtual Reality
Focus areas (cont.) Virtual Reality type 1: Experience another world Sci-fi movies as examples: Applications in vertical industries: Entertainment Education The Matrix (1999) The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Focus areas (cont.) Virtual Reality type 2: Experience another place in this world Sci-fi movies as examples: Applications in vertical industries: Scientific exploration Defense Travel Healthcare Avatar (2009) Surrogates (2009)
Focus areas (cont.) Augmented Reality
Focus areas (cont.) Human Augmentation Enhanced and/or extended senses Enhance: The enhancement of current sensory experiences Extend: The extension of our senses to different perceptual spectra (such as seeing in microwaves or x-ray frequencies) These technologies will help perceptually impaired people regain their senses but also allow new sensory experiences for everyone. Sci-fi movies as examples: Transcendence (2014)
Focus areas (cont.) Human Augmentation Machine-Aided Reactions Sci-fi movies as examples: Machine-Aided Reactions: Machines offload or assist with some human senses and reactions to enhance human productivity or capability. RoboCop (1987) Iron Man (2008)
Other relevant areas Wearables Consumer Healthcare Smart Robots Autonomous Vehicles Smart Home and more...
