National Bandanna Day School Fundraising Guide
Thank You Cancer is different in a young person s world, and in this year alone, 23,000 young people will have their world turned upside down by a cancer diagnosis. We help young people cope with cancer in their family, rebuild their foundations and connect with others in the same boat. That s how CanTeen is the difference. On behalf of the young people you have helped, we would like to thank you for supporting CanTeen by joining thousands of other Australians who are doing their bit to make a difference. By hosting a National Bandanna Day fundraiser, you are making sure that no young person faces cancer alone. 2
Step by step guide BEFORE THE DAY Pick your fundraiser: There are literally hundreds of things you can do to support CanTeen, so pick a fundraiser that you re excited about. The sky is the limit! Set a fundraising target: Whether it s selling 25 cupcakes at $2 each or raising $1,000 to support young people attending our New Member Program, set your goal and aim high! Plan your activity: Now you ve set your target, it s time to plan how you ll get there! It s all about What? Where? When? and How? Spread the word: Advertise in your newsletter, bulletin board and on morning assemblymake sure everyone knows about it! ON THE DAY Sell bandannas: Make sure your bandannas are on display and encourage your staff and students to purchase one. Hold your fundraiser: Hold a bake sale, sausage sizzle or Mufti Day- whatever it is, make sure you encourage participation and collect donations. Enjoy yourself: You are doing a wonderful thing for CanTeen make sure you have fun whilst doing it! We would love to hear about it, so don t forget to tag @CanTeenAus and #bandannaday on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. AFTER THE DAY Pay in the funds raised: Once the fundraising is over, it s time to collect donations and send them through. For more information on how to return these funds see page 7. Reward yourself: You have done an amazing thing! Because of you, more young people living with cancer will receive the support and services they need. Be sure to take a moment, relax, and give yourself the credit you deserve (Don t worry- school holidays are almost here!)
Fundraising Ideas 1. BAKE SALE Don an apron (and bandanna!) this National Bandanna Day and sell some delicious baked treats. FUN TIP: Head to our website to find decorations for your bake sale, including posters, place cards and bunting! 3. HOLD A BANDANNA DAY BBQ Start up the BBQ and spark some much needed awareness for CanTeen. Charge $2 (or more!) per sausage sandwich - the students will love it! FUN TIP: Why not invite parents along to have lunch with their child and raise even more awareness and funds for CanTeen. Kate, CanTeen Offspring Member My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2012. I was 14 at the time and it felt like my world was crumbling If CanTeen wasn t there to support me I would have fallen apart completely. CanTeen gave me a place to be around people that weren t scared of cancer, a place where I could be completely who I am and not be ashamed of my own story. Supporting CanTeen results in the support of so many young people like me. The support gives us the opportunity to connect and help each other and we all can t thank you enough for giving us that opportunity. 2. HOLD A MUFTI DAY Hold a mufti day on National Bandanna Day and collect a gold coin donation from students (and teachers) for participating! Make sure you fine those teachers who don t join in the fun! FUN TIP: Encourage students to incorporate the bandanna into their outfits. A delicious bake sale is a great way to raise some additional funds for CanTeen on National Bandanna Day 4. GO WILD Looking to make an impact? Students will empty their pockets to see their teachers do something silly for a great cause. Silly costumes, head shave, cream pie to the face It s in your hands! FUN TIP: Don t let your principal get out of this onestudents will go crazy to see their principal do something wacky to support the cause! 4
Every Bit Counts! Now that your school has decided to hold a National Bandanna Day fundraiser as well as selling bandannas, it s time to think about how you can make the most of it. DESIGN YOUR OWN BANDANNA COMPETITION Use your school art time to have students design their own bandanna in the lead up to National Bandanna Day. Charge an entry fee and announce the winner on National Bandanna Day. RUN A RAFFLE Approach local businesses and your school community to donate prizes to raffle off on National Bandanna Day. Draw the winners at the end of your event for a sure-fire way to finish with a bang! MATCH MY EFFORTS Ask a local business to match your fundraising efforts and to show their support with you. In return, you can provide free advertising for them in your school newsletter. SHOW YOUR THANKS Make sure your school community know how much their attendance and support helps by playing the CanTeen video and thanking all those who participated. Let them know how much you raised to support young people living with cancer. Tara Anglican School for Girls raised over $1,000 by holding their own National Bandanna Day fundraising week and hosting their very own sausage sizzle. Fundraising with CanTeen was amazing! At first we had no idea how we would raise money for this cause, but thankfully CanTeen supported us and gave us innovative ideas. Our whole school got involved and were so enthusiastic about wearing bandannas for a good cause. Nardeen Boulos, student at Tara Anglican School for Girls in NSW 5
