If you are looking for an excellent handbook/guide on academic writing for your soonto-be high schooler, I can t recommend enough They Say/I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing. The new 4 th high school edition will be released soon, but you can buy an older edition as well. This is a book that your student should keep and use all throughout high school and college. The two books listed below offer up tons of fun creative writing activities and prompts that are sure to get kids excited about writing. Giving young writers the chance to tap into their creative sides through writing is great way to get them invested in all aspects of the writing process. Grades 5 and up: Levine, Gail Carson, Writing Magic: Creating Stories That Fly All ages: Benke, Karen, Rip the Page: Adventures in Creative Writing **I LOVE this book! Students love it, too.
