National Association of Women in Construction Education Foundation CADIDESIGNIDRAFTING COMPETITION HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DESIGN PROBLEM AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION I. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The design problem is to plan a residence for a family of five. The "Smiths" have asked you to design their new home. They have provided you with a site plan (site plan is included in this packet) and a few specific requirements. However, they are relying on your creativity to provide them with a new functional and aesthetically pleasing design that will blend in with the surrounding vernacular of the area. The following requirements have been provided to you by Mr. and Mrs. Smith: 1. They want a single story residence. 2. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have three children - a daughter seven years old and twin sons five years old. Each child will have his/her own bedroom. 3. Mr. Smith is a banker and toy collector. He would like a glass display cabinet built into the foyer area and the family room area of the house for the display of his John Deere 1I16 th scale toy tractor collection. These need to be at least 18" deep x 4'0" wide at each location. 4. Mrs. Smith has her own interior design business which she runs from the home. She also requires a storage room or alcove adjacent to the office for the storage of carpet, fabric, tile and laminate samples (approximately 80 sq. ft.). She does not have clients coming to her home but she does have salespeople delivering samples and catalogues and meeting with her on various products. She does not want these salespeople walking through the house, therefore she needs direct access from the outside of her office. 2012-2013 CAD/DESIGN/DRAFTING COMPETITION GUIDELINES 1
