optimizing solar power CONSULTING AND EXPERT SERVICE QUALITY ASSURANCE CONCEPTS SPECIFIC MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY
Optimizing Solar power Harnessing and maximizing solar power is our business. CSP Services, based in Cologne, Germany and Almería, Spain, is a spin-off company of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The center has been engaged for many years on research and development work in the field of concentrating solar thermal power stations, while CSP Services is responsible for the practical realization of knowledge and experience gained in R&D in the industrial, technical field. We offer consultancy and measurement services for lower investment risk, higher performance projects, more solar power production optimizing profitability for investors, operators, clients and the environment. Utilizing our wide-ranging experience, we have developed efficient, practical measurement technology systems, and evaluation tools for all CSP applications. They provide us with the data needed to deliver the desired quality of individual components for an installation be it at the development, manufacturing or operation stage or on how their performance can be improved. 3
PHOTOGRAMMETRIC MEASUREMENT SYSTEM QFOTO In-line quality control for support frames of collector modules Even a few millimeters deviation in assembly may result in considerable reduction in performance. The photogrammetric QFoto system automatically measures the collectors from different angles and evaluates the readings using our specialized software. For this purpose a pattern of targets is applied on the structure. The resulting measurements reveal deviations from the ideal parabolic shape. The technique is applied to 3D measurements in quality control of the collector modules geometry in many collector fabrication lines in Spain and North Africa. The total thermal power of these solar fields is in the range of 1500 MW. 4 5
DEFLECTOMETRIC MEASUREMENT SYSTEM QDEC High resolution shape measurement of concentrating mirrors The deflectometric measurement system QDec, developed and applied at DLR and CSPS, is a digital photographic measurement system with image analysis of the reflected image of a pattern taken by a high resolution camera. It is especially suitable for the measurement of geometric surface deviations of solar concentrator mirrors. During the measurement changing line patterns are projected on a white screen and images of the reflected patterns are taken. Our powerful software tool evaluates the images, determines the slope deviations and optionally calculates the flux distribution and intercept factor for a given geometry. This measurement principle leads to high accuracy in the surface slopes, high spatial resolutions and short measurement times. The deflectometric measurement system QDec can be used flexibly for a wide range of concentrator types and shapes such as individual mirrors or glasses, heliostats, dishes and trough modules. At present it is successfully used for quality assurance in several solar mirror and collector manufacturing companies worldwide. 6 7
SOLAR RESOURCE ASSESSMENT MDI Plant monitoring MHP Concentrating solar power systems require direct solar irradiation (DNI). For the development of large CSP projects with investments totaling hundreds of millions, reliable information about the specific site is required in order to predict technical and economic performance. The MDI system for solar resource assessment uses an RSP sensor (rotating shadowband pyranometer) for reliable irradiation measurements. This type of sensor, together with DLR calibration, specific data processing and with its low sensitivity to soiling, has proven to be the premium choice for measuring DNI in CSP site selection before building a CSP plant. Our MHP systems, with high-precision solar sensors, pyranometers and pyrheliometers mounted on a sun tracker, provide accurate on-line irradiance data for CSP plant operation. CSP Services supplies the systems fully installed on site. Calibration, operation and maintenance service of the equipment as well as data evaluation ensure high quality and reliable data for the purpose of feasibility studies, project performance calculations, support of project financing and solar power plant operation monitoring. 8 9
